Super Bowl Tix: $9,000. Pay for the Workers Pouring $18 Beers: $14.25 an Hour

“I work three jobs and I still qualify for Medicaid,” Walker told the Chronicle in an interview this week after getting off work at the Las Vegas Raiders home stadium in Paradise, Nev., just southwest of the Las Vegas Strip. “That should tell you something.”

Walker’s plight is not unique. About 2,300 workers will be serving hot dogs, mixing cocktails and scrubbing toilets on Sunday, from stadium janitors to ushers to cashiers hired by companies contracted to manage the new stadium as well as a couple dozen independent restaurants.

Some make as little as $13 an hour for part-time, seasonal jobs that leave many needing other employment to support themselves."

Atlanta Keeps Putting Up Roadblocks as Organizers Push to Vote on Cop City

"On January 29, two activists locked themselves to construction equipment belonging to the main “Cop City” contractor, shutting down the work site in downtown Atlanta for hours. “Myself and countless other residents have tried every legal avenue to Stop Cop City—but the City government has stonewalled us every step of the way,” an activist called Temperance said in a press statement. “I don’t want to have to be doing this today, but direct action and civil disobedience are the only options we have left.” Both activists were arrested and jailed.

In a way, the movement was returning to its roots. In 2021, the fight to stop Cop City began with direct action. After two years of protest, organizers extended their effort to the ballot box. Some felt it was critical to let Atlantans weigh in directly on the construction of a vast new law enforcement training center—and they were betting that the will of the people would ultimately come down on their side. On a more practical level, a referendum campaign struck Mary Hooks, a lead organizer for the Cop City vote coalition, as a straightforward process with delineated steps and rules: a signature collection phase, a break while the city verified them, then on to a massive voter turnout effort. “We were like, ‘This seems very clear in terms of the path that we need to be walking on,’” she recalled.

As it turns out, the path has been anything but clear. The Atlanta city government has thrown up barriers at every turn, miring the petition gathering and signature approval process in bureaucratic and legal delays. The city has even drawn the ire of mainstream Democratic politicians and voting rights groups in its attempts to deploy classic forms of voter restriction."

Queer people organizing in solidarity with Palestine continues to grow

"Today, visible and prominent members of the LGBTQIA+ community are using their platforms to publicly voice their support of the Palestinian people. More than 3,500 artists signed on to a letter under the title “Queer Artists for Palestine” calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

“Our queer Palestinian siblings have asked us to stand firmly with them in their call for dignity and self-determination,” the statement reads. “This includes challenging Israel’s whitewashing, or ‘pinkwashing,’ of its brutal military occupation, by exploiting queer performers and voices to cover up decades of right-wing, violent, and racist policies against Palestinians. Now more than ever, we must be clear: queer people are no friends to Israeli apartheid. We use our voices and our platforms to oppose systemic violence and inequality—against Palestinians, and against all people everywhere.”

Signatories include singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers, comedian John Early, singer Kehlani, actor Indya Moore, actor Hari Nef, author Ijeoma Oluo, actor Bella Ramsey, actor Angelica Ross, comedian Bowen Yang, and drag artists Shea Couleé, Kandy Muse, and Sasha Velour. The artists pledge not to perform in public events in Israel “until Palestinians are free.”

LGBTQIA+ celebrities, including comedian Margaret Cho, actor Alan Cumming, singer Adam Lambert, singer Janelle Monáe, actor Rosie O’Donnell, actor Sara Ramírez, actor Susan Sarandon, actor Kristen Stewart, and comedian Wanda Sykes signed onto the Artists4Ceasefire letter.

Another notable statement showing queer solidarity with Palestine is A Liberatory Demand from Queers in Palestine, signed by more than 500 organizations from more than 50 countries. The organizations include queer groups of all kinds, from Vegan Rugby Lesbians to Queer Mutual Aid Lebanon and queer Palestine solidarity groups from around the world like the Queer Palestinian Empowerment Network, Los Angeles LGBTQIA+ 4 Palestine, Queer Artists for a Free Palestine, Queer Cinema for Palestine, and Queers for Palestine chapters in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Germany. Prisoners in the US are part of a hidden workforce linked to hundreds of popular food brands

"Civilian workers are guaranteed basic rights and protections by OSHA and laws like the Fair Labor Standards Act, but prisoners, who are often not legally considered employees, are denied many of those entitlements and cannot protest or form unions.

“They may be doing the exact same work as people who are not incarcerated, but they don’t have the training, they don’t have the experience, they don’t have the protective equipment,” said Jennifer Turner, lead author of a 2022 American Civil Liberties Union report on prison labor.

Almost all of the country’s state and federal adult prisons have some sort of work program, employing around 800,000 people, the report said. It noted the vast majority of those jobs are connected to tasks like maintaining prisons, laundry or kitchen work, which typically pay a few cents an hour if anything at all. And the few who land the highest-paying state industry jobs may earn only a dollar an hour.

Altogether, labor tied specifically to goods and services produced through state prison industries brought in more than $2 billion in 2021, the ACLU report said. That includes everything from making mattresses to solar panels, but does not account for work-release and other programs run through local jails, detention and immigration centers and even drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities.

Some incarcerated workers with just a few months or years left on their sentences have been employed everywhere from popular restaurant chains like Burger King to major retail stores and meat-processing plants. Unlike work crews picking up litter in orange jumpsuits, they go largely unnoticed, often wearing the same uniforms as their civilian counterparts. "

The Controversial Animal Testing Behind Elon Musk’s Neuralink Project is Killing Animals and Hurting Monkeys

"According to reports, monkeys subjected to Neuralink experiments endured unimaginable suffering, including having holes drilled into their skulls and being implanted with devices that often did not fit properly. These procedures, which involved drilling into the monkeys’ heads multiple times and attaching implants to their brains, resulted in significant physical and psychological trauma for the animals involved.

Disturbingly, the documents also reveal instances where monkeys had parts of their limbs amputated and experienced severe health complications such as vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures. The death reports for these animals paint a grim picture of the toll exacted by Neuralink‘s experiments, with monkeys enduring invasive surgeries and suffering from infections and other ailments before ultimately being euthanized.

The sheer scale of animal testing conducted by Neuralink is staggering, with reports indicating that over 1,500 animals, including sheep, pigs, and monkeys, have been killed in the pursuit of advancing the company’s technology. Such revelations have sparked widespread condemnation from Animal rights groups, who have accused Neuralink of a “systematic disregard” for the well-being of test subjects."

UAW members vote on resolution calling leadership to rescind Biden endorsement

"UAW Labor for Palestine, a coalition of United Auto Workers (UAW) union members who support the liberation of Palestine, voted unanimously on Wednesday to release an official statement calling for the labor group’s leadership to rescind its endorsement for President Joe Biden’s reelection. The coalition joins a growing number of rank-and-file member groups leveraging their unions’ political cache to pressure the White House to stop abetting Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza. The groundswell of support signals a public shift concerning the occupation of Palestine, which had previously received fairly little attention within the U.S. labor movement.

“It’s an unprecedented breakthrough in labor in this country to have resolutions passed, even the weak resolutions which challenge effectively … the domination and the stranglehold of Zionism within American labor,” said Michael Letwin, a longtime anti-war activist and organizer with Labor for Palestine, a coalition of labor organizers and Palestinian rights activists formed in 2004. “There’s never been anything like this before.”

The resolution vote under UAW Labor for Palestine (a separate entity from Letwin’s Labor for Palestine) follows protests during the UAW National Community Action Program conference in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 24, when President Shawn Fain announced the organization’s endorsement of Biden. The UAW issued an official call for a ceasefire in Gaza the previous month following pressure from union members to do so."

At The Hague, Israel Mounted a Defense Based in an Alternate Reality

"Israel’s defense was the inverse of South Africa’s case yesterday, and as weak in offering documented facts as South Africa’s was powerful. History began on October 7, the Israelis seemed to say, South Africa is Hamas, South Africa did not give Israel a chance to meet up and chat about Gaza before suing for genocide, and actually the Israel Defense Forces is the most moral entity on Earth. As for the voluminous public statements by senior Israeli officials indicating genocidal intent, those were just “random assertions” by some irrelevant underlings. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements invoking a murderous story from the Bible about killing the women, infants, and cattle of your enemies? The South Africans just don’t understand theology and presented Netanyahu’s words out of context."

Israel Bombed an Al Jazeera Cameraman — and Blocked Evacuation Efforts as He Bled to Death

"All told, Abu Daqqa had lain wounded and bleeding just two kilometers away from the nearest hospital, yet no one could reach him for well over five hours while his colleagues and much of the world watched. The Israeli military were well aware that an Al Jazeera journalist was lying helpless, The Intercept’s reporting shows, yet it did not allow emergency teams to safely pass for nearly four hours and did not send a bulldozer for over an hour after that. (The Israeli military did not respond to questions from The Intercept.)

Much of the evidence points toward a targeted Israeli strike on the Al Jazeera journalists. “In this area there was no one but us. Therefore there was no room for error by the Israeli army considering that drones, large and small, were in the sky in the area,” Dahdouh said. “They knew everything we were doing the whole time, and we were targeted as we were returning — of this there is no doubt.”

Gaza is now the deadliest place for journalists on record. The Palestinian Journalist Syndicate has documentedOpens in a new tab the killing of over 100 journalists in just three months. Meanwhile, the Committee to Protect Journalists foundOpens in a new tab that more journalists have been killed in the first 10 weeks of the Israel’s war on Gaza — nearly all of them Palestinian — than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire year. Many of the journalists still alive in Gaza have lost multiple family members and their homes.

Dahdouh himself has become a symbol of both the suffering and resilience of Palestinian journalists in Gaza. In October, his wife, son, daughter, and grandson were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp where they had sought shelter after their house was bombed. On Sunday, his eldest son, Hamza, also a journalist, was killed alongside another journalist, Mustafa Thuraya, in an airstrike on their car in the western part of Khan Younis.

“Holding the killer accountable is the least that can be done so that they don’t escape punishment every time, which leads to the continuation of the targeting and attacks of Palestinian journalists without accountability and without trial,” Dahdouh said. “The targeting and destruction of offices, like Al Jazeera’s offices; the targeting of Palestinian families, such as is the case with my family; and the targeting of homes, like my home that was destroyed and where there are no houses around it in the first place, so they know they are targeting the house of the head of Al Jazeera. It is clear that this is all happening in the context of pressure and punishment of Palestinian journalists by the Israeli military. Yet, as I always say, despite all the hurt and pain, we will continue in carrying this message and fulfilling our duty and relaying information and pictures and news to our viewers, so they can be the first ones with everything that is happening in the Gaza Strip.”

More Texans Died From Heat in 2023 Than Any Other Year on Record

"In August, Texas lawmakers sent a letter to the U.S. Postal Service urging the agency to supply bottled water to letter carriers on their route following claims by San Antonio postal workers and residents that the agency stopped doing so during the summer heatwave. Lawmakers asked the agency to create a plan to ensure that letter carriers are permitted to “take necessary breaks from the heat without retaliation, access cold water without having to pay out of pocket and visit a store or return to the station to pick up water bottles without penalty.”

A recent citation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration stated that USPS failed to protect its workers from the heat on June 20, the date of Eugene Gates Jr.’s death. The heat index in Dallas ranged from 96 to 113 degrees that day. OSHA proposed a $15,625 fine and recommended that the Postal Service train employees on how to deal with heat, allow them to take water breaks on hot days and begin their work day earlier in the morning to reduce their exposure to high temperatures.

The Postal Service did not respond to a request for comment."

Women and Girls in Gaza Are Suffering Through Their Periods Without Water, Medicine, Pads

"After months of Israeli bombardment, the health care system in Gaza is “completely collapsing,” Doctors Without Borders warned in December. Women, girls, and pregnant and menstruating people are among those experiencing the brunt of this: One hospital worker told Bisan that the “scarcity of basic products results in more hospital visits, longer hospital stays, and worsened conditions” due to infection and disease. On December 22, the World Health Organization reported that no “functional” hospitals remained in northern Gaza, and only nine remained in the south to serve an endless influx of injured and sick patients. Other women Bisan spoke to describe the “humiliation,” indignity, and mental health toll of being on their periods and lacking access to basic sanitary products. This is all on top of the physical pain and discomfort of a period under the best circumstances, and the daily, inescapable threats to their lives from Israel’s ongoing military campaign.

As of Tuesday, Al Jazeera reports at least 22,185 people have been killed, at least 57,000 have been injured, and thousands remain missing since Israel launched its offensive on Gaza in October. The Israeli death toll from Hamas attacks on Oct. 7 stands at 1,139 with about 200 people kidnapped. In October, Palestinian Family Planning & Protection Association’s (PFPPA) executive director Ammal Awadallah told Jezebel that life under occupation has always strained the sexual health resources available to women and girls: “Even before the latest escalation of attacks on the Gaza Strip, everything we had was so limited—and of course, this is not the first time the Gaza Strip has been attacked by Israel.”

But over the last few months, the state of sexual and reproductive health in Gaza has become a crisis. At the end of October, Al Jazeera reported that the total lack of privacy, water, and sanitary products amid Israel’s war on Gaza has forced many women and girls to take pills to delay their periods. This is despite unpleasant side effects the pills can cause, such as irregular bleeding and nausea. "

Gender-Affirming Care Ban for Trans Youth Goes Into Effect in West Virginia

"The gender-affirming care ban is extremely unpopular. During a public hearing in February, only two out of 79 people spoke in favor of the bill, and in March, transgender advocates packed the state courthouse to protest against the ban.

“It’s time to show our lawmakers that the LGBTQ+ community of WV will not tolerate these attacks on our rights and freedoms,” Ash Orr, cofounder of the West Virginia Transgender Coalition, said on social media in March. “We will continue to organize, to care for one another, and to fight the good fight.”
