Er, yeah, what /u/sauceNAOBot said. I know we don't really need two source comments, but it's a reflex. Anyway, enjoy some sparkly yuri.

The irony of news outlets now complaining that they’ve lost all that traffic after Meta has started changing it’s policies is that it really undercuts the notion that they were getting that news content without anything in return.

Unpopular take, but it’s also true.

You all got duped.

I don't think the problem is the companies. I've described it before; they show of stories, with back to the original sites, classic fair use. The companies get a lot -- for many of them, a majority -- of their web from such linking.

The problem is that the media companies haven't figured out how to monetize that traffic. Unfortunately, I don't see an easy answer.

A public-interest news aggregator with a subscription might work.

Ugh, just found a problem while using . I have been trying to use archive links for some outside news sources, but what I have found is that some servers trigger obviously to stop abuse, but this means I am blocked when I try to follow links on browser. :eyeroll: Will follow with example.

Update: https://social.veltens.org/@angelo/110643298577042397 Now all t.co links are blocked by twitter login. All we ever shared via twitter can not be followed anymore without signing in to twitter, no matter where in the they point to. Twitter put a gate in front of our links by "shortening" them and now they locked the gate. We never should have given them such power.

angelo,
@angelo@social.veltens.org avatar

Ok, false alert, sorry! After double checking actually most t.co links are working and also the archive contains a field "expanded_url" with the full URL! So the situation is much better than I initially thought.

Thanks for double checking and making me aware

I saw a thread the other day basically talking about how we need to bring back Yahoo style directories and the best way to go about that and I think a lot of people are trying to way over engineer it.

Why not start small? If you have a blog, make your own page with a directory of your best sources for the topics that interest you. Then we either webring that shit or compile them later. But this is something you can start with now, you can go out this week and compile your best sources. You can link to other people's directories you find useful and create a network. Then if someone wants to curate all that into "Xahoo.com" later then we've got a head start. We don't need to fuss around over the tech, we need the information.

jasonnab,

@lori I have a list I update every now and then:

https://jason.nabein.me/#links

Unfortunately I struggle to understand how to webring properly so I haven't gotten there yet, but feel free to link to my site!

Reliable online by experienced journalists: good thing. Subscription/paywall to get more in-depth reporting (as an alternative to being fed advertisements), probably also a good thing. Journalists have to eat too. to the online news: good thing, journalists get to eat more, more people get informed.

Payment/ to publish links to aforementioned news? Unless those links are being accompanied by blatant plagiarism of the linked news articles, this makes no sense.

Wake up .
