Public group chats (!!), FontAwesome Pro support, better dark mode, among much much more!
We're really happy with the latest changes to the #chats system. Who needs #Discord anymore when you can have a kickass #forum system with chats subsystem that is on-par with Discord? 😊
Since we just had issues with a #Discourse upgrade AGAIN on the OctoPrint community forums (the admin team is trying to fix things up as I'm typing this), does anyone here have experience with migrating from Discourse to #NodeBB by any chance?
Seriously considering a future move right now. We've had nothing but bad experiences with their "official supported way" of doing a self-hosted setup, and I feel really bad for the admins.
@lewiscowles1986 I know, I've been running community.octoprint.org for half a decade now, and self hosted since early 2019* (with the help of some kickass admins) 😅
People sometimes ask how we got #nodebb to be so fast and performant.
Our secret weapon is being #Canadian 🇨🇦 — you see... our internet is so fucking expensive we can't afford the faster plans, so we have to make our code run fast otherwise we will die before the page loads.
We hold the wonderful distinction of having the most expensive internet in the world on a $/mbits scale 🙄
🌠 Did you know that #NodeBB now supports public chat rooms?
tl;dr — The upcoming 3.3.0 release will add support for public group chats and allow bigger rooms. 🎊
We've put in a whole bunch of effort to refactor the chat system to support this, bringing us just that little bit closer to replacing incumbents like IRC/Discord/Slack, check it out on our forum, or take a stroll down memory lane and read up on the history of our chat implementation 👇
We sometimes field requests from people who want to import their existing users in from a separate user database. While we normally recommend the use of a single sign-on plugin (#sso) to act as an alternative authenticator, we also now support user import via CSV.
Back in April, we updated our publish scripts to push new images to the GitHub Container Repository #ghcr instead of #Docker — if you use Docker to deploy #NodeBB, switching is pretty straightforward.
Mea culpa time — you might've heard that we're hacking away (in the best sense of the word) at #ActivityPub support in #NodeBB, but it turns out someone asked for it back in 2019 and it got zero buy-in from our founders 😥
@shoq that's a good question! The devil is in the details. The thing is, we could rush out a release that is very narrow in scope (e.g. ability to follow a category, or a one-way user follow relationship), but baseline expectation is to release a #MVP that contains the expected activities — follows, notes, boosts, reports...
I've been spending much of the past few weeks laying the groundwork, so hopefully I'll have more to show soon 🙂
@shoq that would be very welcome and is much appreciated. At some point I'll have a private beta for testing.
The thing is I myself am very new to the #fediverse. There's a lot of nuance and expectations over how fediverse apps work, that #NodeBB ought to follow. There's a time and a place to push boundaries and break things, but I don't think that time is now 😉. Working with people experienced with the status quo would provide a good objective review.
Thinking about Hacker News but sprinkled with #activitypub
imagine being able to reply and participate to any #HN post from the #fediverse and with #webmentions have fediverse comments mingled with native HN activity.
I could easily do a test with this idea using RSS to autofeed a #Discourse or #Nodebb forum and then consume the firehose from #Fediverse, just for fun!
Whoa! This is not a rumour! @nodebb actually confirmed they’re joining the #Fediverse!
Hooray! #ActivityPub integration is on its way! This is a big deal because #NodeBB is mature forum software that’s been in development for quite some time!
I'm hearing rumours that #NodeBB is adding support for #ActivityPub. Some folks have told me that this implementation will have group federation capabilities similar to #Lemmy and #Kbin.
I need to investigate this rumour further. If true, this is huge.
At the very least, I know NodeBB is discussing ActivityPub.
I've been musing passively about how I can develop locally while still making #ActivityPub requests in order to test with real HTTP requests, and was pretty close to just deploying my code on a test subdomain (and then making the call to my #Mastodon server — crag.social), but then realized I could just stand up two #NodeBB instances on my machine and have them gab to each other instead
The free open source forum software NodeBB is now working on official Fediverse support. Federation isn't ready yet, but if this interests you, you might want to follow their account:
Thanks @feditips for the shout-out, and an enthusiastic welcome to all of our new followers! @devnull is working on our #ActivityPub support out in the open, and updates will come from this (nodebb) account.
We're excited for what the #fediverse represents, and can't wait to have our software (developed over a decade OUTSIDE of the fediverse) take its first baby steps into this new world 🌎
@shoq@feditips@amart@atomicpoet we use self-hosted Discourse on a VPS, but they do offer hosted plans. $25 for small private forum, and then $100 for public and up. It's quite expensive. Self-hosted option works really well, but requires a bit of tech knowledge.
