Wonderful story of how #African women fleeing slavery into the deep forest of #Suriname hid #rice grains in their hair. This has preserved rare varieties which can now help environmental adaptation.
"The granman recounts the story of how an 18th-century ancestor named Ma Paanza hid rice grains in her hair and brought them to the newly founded communities in the jungle. The Saamaka still grow a strain of rice called Ma Paanza. “[Rice] is easy to cultivate. It was an ideal food for us then and until now,” Aboikoni says."

Just three plant species, wheat, maize and rice, account for 60% of all food eaten globally. Crop science expert, Prof Tafadzwanashe Mabhaudhi, argues that many of Africa’s 30,000 edible plants must be revived. #Food#Farming#Agriculture#Crops#Africa#Wheat#Rice#Maize#PlantScience
🍚🌾 Rice farming produces 12% of global methane emissions. That's more than 30 times as potent as CO2! But there are ways to reduce this impact, such as using rice straw for paper or MDF, or using machines that mulch the field instead of burning or flooding it. #rice#methane#innovationhttps://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-04020-3
Today I learned: There's a current scientific best practice to cook rice when it comes to the endpoints “removal of pollutants” and “preserving nutrients/minerals”.
TL;DR: Cook rice with excess water (ratio about 1:4) for about five minutes, drain and discard the water, add fresh water (typical ratio for full absorption), bring to a boil and cool for the remaining time.
Apparently, this is more effective than washing and soaking. Method works for brown and white rice.
@lunchmeat I'm not aware of any big, accessible and comprehensive database for N.A. I'm hopeful that something of this sort will evolve out of the vast store of data being accumulated by the Archives of the Impossible project, created by Jeff #Kripal at #Rice University:
It might be worth poking around there, though I don't think much of the material (the personal files of Jacques #Vallee, for example) has been digitized yet, and there's a focus on UFO/UAP to start with

I recently came across the #RICE prioritization model that product managers can use to set goals and prioritize whats important.
I felt that this could be interesting to map over on how the #softwareengineering teams set goals and prioritize what is important as we build software, but within that context.

What I would be interested to hear from people is their opinion and what is the process that they follow or have followed in the past to keep evolving and growing the knowledge of a team or directing and focusing the team on the important things for the business or even for the software engineering process as well.
I made a strange and wonderful discovery today! For my meal (OMaD day) I had some pork tenderloin and delicata squash.
The tenderloin had all of the fat trimmed off it, so I cut it into 6 big chunks and packed some pork fat that I'd gotten from a local store around them, then roasted it.
This pork fat is white, no pieces of actual meat mixed in, and looks otherwise like freshly-ground beef. Wait...I'll go take a picture...
So when I took the roasted meat out of the oven, I thought the pork fat would be melted away as I didn't see any meat mixed into it - but it wasn't! And when I tasted the little pieces that were left, they had the distinct texture of RICE! They didn't have much flavor, and I felt like I was eating pork and rice for supper...AMAZING!!!
So, I thought it was time to go #traditional. It's getting colder so I thought I'd start drinking #booze the old #Chinese way: warmed. To this end I got a wine warmer set.
Today's #experiment is starting relatively mildly with the #Hakka #glutinous #rice #wine I'd mentioned earlier. It's 25%, but it drinks like fruit juice and is thus exceptionally dangerous for those of us who don't like drunkenness.
(N.B. I don't like being drunk. I love being tipsy; the feeling of a drink inside of me. I hate feeling drunk.)
The results were very interesting. Some of them I expected (the drink is no longer dangerous: it is very clearly a potent alcoholic beverage when warmed!), but some of them unexpected (the flavour profile changes dramatically, giving it a "sparkling" sensation on the tongue and making the sour complex of flavours stand out in the forefront). It's still sweet. It still tastes delicious. But it's an entirely new beverage and it no longer brings with it the accidental drunkenness the cooled version brings.
