‘It’s pillage’: thirsty Uruguayans decry Google’s plan to exploit water supply - Country suffering its worst #drought in 74 years, with government even mixing saltwater into drinking supply.
A plan to build a Google data centre that will use millions of litres of water a day has sparked anger in #Uruguay, which is suffering its worst drought in 74 years.
Water shortages are so severe in the country that a state of emergency has been declared in #Montevideo and the authorities have added salty water to the public drinking water supplies, prompting widespread protests.
Critics claim that the government is prioritising water for transnationals and agribusiness at the expense of its own citizens. Daniel Pena, a researcher at the University of the Republic in Montevideo, said: “Only a tiny proportion of water in Uruguay is used for human consumption. The majority is used for big agro industries, such as soya, rice and wood pulping. Now we have #Google planning to use enormous quantities of water.”
The storms also triggered landslides and the partial collapse of a dam structure at a small hydro-electric power plant. Flooding from heavy rains battering Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul has killed 39 people, according to local authorities, with the death toll expected to rise as dozens remain unaccounted-for....
Impeachment request against Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) reaches 129 signatures and sets a historical record.
‼️ This number surpasses the one registered in the impeachment request of former President Dilma Rousseff, which had 124 signatories in 2016. At the end of the process, the former president had her mandate revoked.
➡️ The crisis in Lula's government began after the president compared Israel's offensive in the #Gaza Strip to the Holocaust. He made the statement on Sunday, the 18th, during a press conference in #Ethiopia.
💬 According to lawmakers, the president's statement constitutes a crime of responsibility, in accordance with Article 5 of Law 1.079/1950, which establishes the following:

The Congo and Amazon rainforests absorb a lot of carbon. But
"This study shows that while research on CDR [carbon dioxide removal] and its impacts has risen dramatically in recent years, the vast majority has so far focused on Europe and Asia, or on the global picture.
“The underrepresentation of #Africa and #SouthAmerica in the scientific literature is critical since these regions are considered essential for CDR deployment."
