A new PBS documentary, “Teilhard: Visionary Scientist,” premiered this month. Paleontologist, theologian, and mystic Pierre Teilhard de Chardin tried to be a faithful son of the Church and a faithful scientist as he brought both those together. Challenged during his life (and after), refused permission to publish, rehabilitated by recent popes.
"I didn’t go to religion to make me happy. I always knew a bottle of Port would do that. If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity."
Are our moral #values shaped by divine love or are they a result of biological requirements of human life?
THIS WEDNESDAY April 17 at #UniversityOfTexas#Austin, #philosophers Ben Bayer and Adam Lloyd Johnson #debate the origins and interpretation of #morality, focusing on differences between secular, scientific interpretations, and theological views.

'A team of academics from the Religions and Theology department at The University of Manchester have created ‘Going Beyond Belief’, a new learning resource for A Level students, with the support of the BBC Beyond Belief team.
The resource has been conceived to support students in schools and colleges to access a collection of innovative research produced by researchers at the University and the rich resource that is the Beyond Belief archive.'
@quakers I want to speak in a discussion group about the topic of "Hell". Do you have any ideas for the #Quaker perspective on the topic? #theology#quakerism
"I mean what is the deal with doctrinal theology? There are thousands of web sites and forums locked in endless pedantic debate, analyzing the arbitrary threads of theories far and wide. Like whether that wizard headmaster is gay, whether it’s kinda weird for hundred-year-old vampires to be dating school girls, and whether portrayals of counter-predatory sexual submissiveness are empowering or denigrating. Theology is the same. Just wanking over fan-fiction. "
@siblingpastry It's completely bonkers given that we're talking about fictional characters anyway. And when all is said and done, it's just sex we're talking about and it shouldn't be anything that stirs up debate or gets people angry over it. It's just sex, people - not the second coming of Christ or the end of the world or anything really deserving of such debate. Get over it!!!

Is literature/music/art that doesn’t involve humans or human emotions relatable? Yes. Humans are great at making stuff up that isn’t there.Humans call them illusions.
@tierfreund@theology IME, when people talk orthopraxy, they're referring to historical precedent - nobody will say that eclectic, DIY polytheists have an orthopraxic personal religion even if they've arrived at a set ritual schedule.
As well - what reason does the lone polytheist actually have to create and maintain a religious practice, all on their own, if they don't actually believe in what they're doing?
The utility of right action is limited to community and group worship -
@tierfreund@theology - it's for signaling to your coreligionists that you're in the same headspace, that you'll follow the prescribed ritual maneuvers, and that you're committed to arriving at the same gnosis, that you respect the tradition.
Because we all know that the Gods can be reached and pleased outside of that.
