I have a lot of special characters memorized (ALT-[key] for windows and long presses for Android) but why is it so needlessly difficult to Google each one individually? Surely someone, somewhere must have compiled a good table of all of them. It would sure come in handy.

@JeremyMallin

Oh really? This might indicate some issue with your system, as Charmap is a tiny utility loading a small font file. Good to hear you have a workaround, though.

@JeremyMallin

I think one issue with tables is the size of current Unicode alphabets, but there's always Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters

TypeIs[], an improved alternative to TypeGuard[] in Python, has been accepted by the Steering Council for Python 3.13 🎉

I'm hoping to combine this functionality with the upcoming TypeForm[] to better support runtime in .

@davidfstr Interesting, that would be useful.

I also looked up your TypeForm thread: https://github.com/python/mypy/issues/9773 . It’s a little hard to search for since that’s also the name of a webform service...

@MagsThePirate and me, and David and Matt, made a game for the Edinburgh global game jam.

It's a competitive typing game for two players and one keyboard,

...and it has moonbears!

We uploaded Moonbear Typing to itch instead of GGJ in protest over their AI sponsorship, and made our game with hand-tweaked, ethical, proc-gen content.

Another excellent distillation of a complex, fraught topic in the open-source world (in this case, ) by @LWN 👏🏻

https://lwn.net/Articles/958326/

I say this reasonably often but: please read, and support, LWN! this kind of useful finger on the pulse of various OSS communities, projects, etc is so valuable and really something of a bygone era. If you deploy to, or develop on, Linux platforms, guaranteed you'll find useful articles on the weekly.

What do you folks use nowadays to measure typing speed?

seedy, to random

Probably the longest shot ever, but in the 2000s when I was learning to , I used a piece of software called Azabat. I'm not sure which version it was, but the specific installation I had used SAPI 4 Microsoft Mary. After completing a typing lesson, it would say: 'Well done, exercise completed. Returning to exercise menu'. It had menu options like 'Echo mode' and 'Introduction' to new keys'. Has anyone heard of or used this software, this version specifically, and is there an archive of it available anywhere?

I've been trying to improve my speed, mostly accuracy, in the last few months and what's really killing me is my inability to spell correctly. I've always been bad at spelling, and not cared much about it - but maybe now I've got more motivation to start caring. How many i's in definititily again?

If includes a wrong typing for a function, where do I have to open the ticket? Pylance or the project?

The definition from calendar.pyi is basically wrong as the function returns actually list[list[list[date]]].

def yeardatescalendar(self, year: int, width: int = 3) -> list[list[int]]: ...

This is a bit concerning especially for streamers. It may be a good idea to learn a habit of muting your mic when entering passwords in the future.

cragsand,
@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

From what I know of AI models you'd likely need to train it specifically on the keyboard and microphone brands used. The bad news is that many streamers often openly share this information about which PC gear they use in their profiles.

Time for a new ✨Three of Wands✨ post: https://threeofwands.com/the-types-of-errors-in-python-apps/

This one is about the different types of errors you're going to encounter writing stuff, and strategies to recognize their categories and make them less impactful.

In other words, another propaganda piece.

Joking aside, there's good advice in there if you don't use typing.

Love the fact that my new keyboard makes me aware of my typing speed. Apparently on long tests where I have the time to get going my typing speed is 147 WPM. This assumes im not putting in any effort to max out my typing speed, however even if i do i doubt id get it too much higher.

SteelFolk,

@freemo I typed my PhD thesis to save money. It was in a mainframe with no formatting until it was printed. My speed was 52 wpm and it took forever.
