Good news: I managed to recover my data and reinstalled Mint. Now just waiting for my package installer script to finish so I can go back to reading webcomics. Oh, and maybe fix the issue with my game controller that started this whole mess?

@RickiTarr @mentallyalex Also what if cats and dogs who need to eat meat could eat meat without us needing to kill other animals for them.

Okay fedifriends, please give me advice on buying a game controller.

Some background: I currently play indie games with native Linux support. But I grew up with consoles, and I still think that I'd be more comfortable with a controller for some kinds of games than with a keyboard In particular, I'd like to play precision platformers with a controller. I also think a controller would be good for homebrew made for old consoles.

I have a strong preference for wired peripherals over wireless, and a strong preference for peripherals that don't require their own batteries.

When I sit down to game, I generally want to be able to start playing right away without much set-up. If a game won't launch, I might spend a few minutes adjusting drivers or settings, or I might immediately give up on that game and pick a different game.

Hence, I'd prefer if possible to find a controller that works "out of the box" with a large number of games. I don't want to spend a lot of time configuring button mappings.

So with that in mind, what controller would y'all recommend I buy?

    STOP DOING CHARACTER LIMITS!
Years of imposing artificially low character limits on social media yet NO REAL WORLD use found.

Want to write a short post? We had a tool for that, it was called "write less text than the maximum allowable length!"

We went from 100,000 character limits on forum posts in dial-up days to 500 character limits on Mastodon or 3000 on Misskey.

Look at some of the character-limited posts that character-limiters want us to take seriously:

    1. OTOOAIBOOAOMTGMKCIITMOM <--A giant acronym that's incomprehensible to anyone outside of the in group, just to save characters.

    2. An image containing a giant wall of text with no alt-text using 100 times as much data as the text on its own would use just to circumvent a character limit and exclude creatures who need accessibility.

3)Here's my very short post: a thread (1/2395872935)

These are REAL character-limited posts dreamed up by REAL social media users!

"Oh, I love short character limits: it means I don't have to spend time reading long posts. Instead I'll spent 20 times as long reading long posts split into threads and continually have to find my place!"
--Statements dreamed up by the willfully ignorant.

@Amelia and her headmate can't even agree on what character limit to use: is it 3,000 or 5,000? They have completely played us.

Study finds that Github Copilot lowers code quality and maintainability:

"We find disconcerting trends for maintainability. Code churn -- the percentage of lines that are reverted or updated less than two weeks after being authored -- is projected to double in 2024 compared to its 2021, pre-AI baseline. We further find that the percentage of 'added code' and 'copy/pasted code' is increasing in proportion to 'updated,' 'deleted,' and 'moved 'code. In this regard, AI-generated code resembles an itinerant contributor, prone to violate the DRY-ness [don't repeat yourself] of the repos visited."

The paper concludes: "How will Copilot transform what it means to be a developer? There's no question that, as AI has surged in popularity, we have entered an era where code lines are being added faster than ever before. The better question for 2024: who's on the hook to clean up the mess afterward?"

Now that y'all have seen the differing career impacts, media coverage of, and societal reactions to, Black women being accused of plagiarism (Claudine Gay) and white women being accused of plagiarism (Neri Oxman)...

you can understand why I say that widely used automated plagiarism detecting software that advertises a false positive rate of 1%🤦🏿‍♂️, is devastating for Black students.

Another flavor of: in a racist country, being falsely accused has devastating consequences

    183231bcb,

@mekkaokereke In Fall 2020 I was forced to use HonorLock, an "anti-cheat" suite which recorded videos of students taking tests in their dorm rooms and then used AI to determine whether or not they were cheating. I had to manually override it a lot because it automatically determined
a)All black people are cheating because it can't recognize their faces at all,
b)Anyone who has a roommate is cheating, because it's impossible to take a test in the same room as someone else,
c)Anyone with autism or ADHD is cheating because their eyes move in unexpected ways,
d)Anyone with photophobia or related eye conditions is cheating because their eyes move in unexpected ways,
e)Anyone using accessability software is cheating because there's software running on their computer
...and a whole bunch of "cheating" accusations that I couldn't discern any reason for.

@RickiTarr Men who identified as The Founding Fathers decided that newspaper articles could be copyrighted to "promote useful arts." But their decision, made in 1787, might not reflect the reality of today, when more hack opinion pundits are identifying as newspapers.

    183231bcb,

@RickiTarr @RickiTarr I wonder how many people have previously subscribed to the New York Times before later regretting it. Clearly New-York-Times-Reading-Identified people don't face enough gatekeeping before they make an irreversible life-altering decision.

    183231bcb,

@farah @RickiTarr Marriage needs to be banned because it's a totally irreversible process that you'll regret but be unable to do anything to fix. But also a lot of people are reversing their marriages with divorce, and that's somehow also proof marriage is bad even though it contradicts my previous argument.

Also, marriage isn't real: it's biologically impossible to get married, and that's why we have to ban marriage.

    Our society is broken.

At CES, I read everything is "AI"--confirming my suspicion that AI is all about marketing and not about intelligence, especially in the consumer.

Among the "AI" products on display are: AI pillows, AI vacuum cleaners, AI refrigerators, AI bird feeders, AI shoes, AI belts, AI dog bowls, AI baby strollers, AI plant pots, AI mirrors, AI baby cry translators, AI BBQs, AI toothbrushes, and so on. Oy.

    183231bcb,

@elaterite AI dog bowls but not AI cat bowls?

This is proof that cats can smell AI, and will refuse to eat out of such a bowl. Dogs, by contrast, will eat it before bothering to check if the AI bowl generated a grape.

Imagine finding out you're a powerful wizard, and you still have to go to school for 7 years! Also, a guy is trying to kill you the whole time. Are the grown up powerful wizards going to help you? Nope, not really, you have to ask other students to help you not die, but some of them are also evil, sooo watch out for that. But at least you're not living under the stairs all the time, I guess.

    183231bcb,

@RickiTarr Also, you're protected by a super strong "love" spell tied to your family, but "family" for the purpose of that spell is only who your close genetic relatives are, and not who loves you.

Oh, and also, you inherit a slave and your favorite principal encourages you not to free him.

Eglamore: I never got over my love for one woman who chose someone else.

    Lemony Snicket: Me too.

    Severus Snape: Me too.

Eglamore: She died, but left a kid behind.

    Snape: Same for me.

Lemony Snicket: Yes, the woman I loved had three kids before she died.

Eglamore: But I knew what I needed to do: I was a mentor for her daughter, a stand-in father figure when her birth father was absent.

Lemony: I'd make a terrible mentor, so I couldn't do that. But I managed to remain friends with her and her eventual husband, and after they died I wrote 13 books about how badass her kids are. Badass is a word which here means "a positive quality that my ex, her husband, and all three of their kids possess that I do not." I did offer to directly help them but they declined my help, and they were probably right to do so.

Snape: Well I dealt with my jealousy by joining the Wizard Nazis even though they want to kill people like the woman I claimed to love, but I didn't see the contradiction because she's One Of The Good Ones. Then after she died I abused her son for seven years because I hate that he exists.

    Eglamore:...
    Lemony:...

Snape: And my author says that I'm a hero!

can someone explain the differences between state-capitalism and state-socialism?

    183231bcb,

@mira In state capitalism each state has one town called the capital of the state (e.g. Richmond, VA).

In state socialism the state runs a social network.

Genuine question: Who would win in a fight between a "Who would win in a fight?" question, a rhetorical question, and a bad-faith question that starts with the words "genuine question"?

You agree that a question starting with "genuine question" is the most annoying form of question, don't you?
