new rule: if your company puts a LLM bot on the front lines of your customer support effort, your company should be legally bound to adhere to whatever the LLM bot states on your behalf.

oh, you put a lying machine at the front door and it's telling people your product does things it doesn't actually do? and now you're stuck making your product do these things? maybe you'll think twice about deploying lying machines...

183231bcb,

@djsundog See this is the kind of AI regulation I can get behind.

183231bcb,

@djsundog Also, if a company has an AI make a claim that has legal consequences, the company should be held liable as if the CEO had made that speech.

E.g., if an AI falsely accuses someone of posting CSAM, the CEO should be prosecuted for falsely reporting a crime.

Y'all I guess I should start getting my questions from Quora!

183231bcb,

@RickiTarr The question doesn't say the baby is human, so he's pretty clearly an alien of a species where babies can talk, have religious beliefs, and skydive. I'd bet there's a pretty good chance that a baby of this species can also survive skydiving without a parachute.

Stop doing "stop doing" memes!

Centuries of internet memes yet no real-world use found for making infographics demanding other creatures stop doing stuff!

Want to stop doing something? We had a tool for that: it was called doing something else!

Here are just some of the crucial, irreplacible things that outlandish internet memers have demanded you stop doing:
*Math
*Character limits
*Stop doing memes

These are REAL stop doing memes made by REAL meme-makers!

"Stop doing replies to fediverse posts." They have played us for absolutely easy marks.

183231bcb,

@deborahh @CivilDev Seems like a misleading headline: the headline says the issue is with password managers, but the article says the vulnerability is that websites that let you "sign in with Google/Facebook" can access your Google/Facebook password. So from the article (I admit I haven't read the original research paper), it sounds like the real danger is SSO, not password managers.

Something that came out in the reporting we did on news outlets reporting Brianna Ghey's dead name was that many outlets did not do so, and those that did rarely made it the docus of the article.

While it's a blow to have it feature anywhere in a story where Ghey's killers didn't even know that name, it's heartening that trans people's feelings about dead names aren't being completely ignored in the reporting on this awful story.

https://www.assignedmedia.org/breaking-news/twibs-whats-in-a-dead-name

183231bcb,

@e_urq

It isn’t called your “dead name” because the name has died; for many trans people, it’s the name your unsupportive family will call you in death. It’s the name they’ll put on your grave marker, even if you haven’t used it in a decade. It’s the vicious lie they’ll tell everybody so they can pretend you were “normal.”

This is a really powerful quote. However, I will say that for me, my dead name is called dead because it's my great uncle's name, and he is dead.

Youtube: I don't spend a lot of time watching videos, but when I do it's still usually on Youtube, as I can't find what I like anywhere else. I don't expect to be able to completely ditch this one unless the cost of hosting videos goes down a lot.

Facebook: It's been a few months since I used this one. The only thing I use it for is to send someone a message if I don't have any contact information aside from their name, which is something the fediverse can't currently replicate. It's slowly becoming less relevant as fewer and fewer people in my cohort are active on Facebook.

Twitter: I used this one for less than a year in 2021, and deleted my account in 2022.

Instagram: I made an account on this one a few years ago but never made posts with it, and evetually deleted my account. I don't use , because I can post pictures from so I don't see a reason to make another account.

Reddit: I deleted my account recently. I haven't made a or account though obviously I can still interact with them from .

Discord: This is the proprietary social network I use the most. There are a lot of communities that don't seem to have alternatives elsewhere. I am hopeful for the future of , but it still feels like a beta, and I can't recommend it to people without technical skills.
Tiktok: I haven't used this in a few years, but I haven't deleted my account either.
Pinterest: I haven't used this in a few years, but I haven't deleted my account either. I'm also not sure what the fediverse alternative is.

Zoom: I have to use this for work. I'm hopeful matrix video calls will eventually be a viable replacement.

Fandom: I have stopped making constructive edits, but I kept my account in case I can use it to vandalize wikis or help them leave Fandom. There is no fediverse alternative I'm aware of: just a bunch of self-hosted wikis that can't interact with each other.

Google announced that starting in June 2024, ad blockers such as uBlock Origin will be disabled in Chrome 127 and later with the rollout of Manifest V3 ().

The new manifest will prevent using custom filters and stops on demand updates of blocklist. Only authorized updates to browser extension will be allowed in the future, which mean an automatic win for Google in their battle to stop YouTube .

is deceitful and threatening to your privacy, and now is a good time to switch to (@mozilla) and/or (@torproject) if you haven't done so already!

As highlighted in TechCrunch's article, Mozilla's exploration of the Fediverse has been truly captivating. They have been working steadily and thoughtfully, achieving remarkable advancements.

I must confess, I have been observing mozilla.social for quite some time. The choice to fork Elk and utilize it as a front end for their server was a clever move. It will be captivating to witness how Mozilla enhances the onboarding experience for its users.

https://techcrunch.com/2023/11/03/why-mozilla-is-betting-on-a-decentralized-social-networking-future/

@fediversenews

183231bcb,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews When Gargron sat down to have a conversation with Facebook about the fediverse, he was criticized for selling out to a spyware company.

When Mozilla openly collaborates with Facebook to develop spyware and build it into their browser (while falsely marketing it as "privacy"), they get praised for "enhancing" the fediverse.

I wonder if there is even a hypothetical action Mozilla could take that would cause them to lose their status as the fediverse's favorite software developer?

To reiterate:

It is, without a doubt, true that the is unsafe for a lot of marginalized groups in a variety of ways.

It is unsafe even for groups that are overrepresented here compared to society at large, such as for queers.

It is also true that the fediverse needs a multipronged, multi_layered_ approach to these issues

are necessary and vital, but I'm not convinced that consensus blocklists nor rapidly updating blocklists are the answer, or even have a place.

1/

183231bcb,

@hrefna What's your opinion on blocklists that allow for automatic unblocking? I.e., a block-list where
a)If an instance is added to the list, instance admins have to manually check whether they want to block it, but
b)If an instance is removed from the list, it automatically gets unblocked on all instances signed up to the list
?

To be clear, I don't know of any implementation of a block list that works that way. And I agree with you that automatically updating blocklists that permanetly break connections have a lot of potential for causing problems.

But I think that propagation-of-forgiveness is a useful feature of automatically-updating blocklists that I wouldn't want to go away, and I don't think auto-unblocking necessarily needs to be paired with auto-blocking.

The phrase "danger to self or others" is a motte and bailey fallacy.

The motte is "murder is so bad that the government should use incarceration in an attempt to reduce murder."

The bailey is "suicide is so bad that the government should use incarceration as a punishment for anyone who even thinks about suicide. Moreover, mental health doctors should be required to play a dual role as both health care providers and cops, who must arrest anyone they suspect of thinking about suicide."

It frequently accompanies another motte and bailey argument, conflating the positions
(Motte) Many creatures benefit from consenual mental health treatment, and in some cases that may include consensually staying overnight in a medical ward.
(bailey): The government should incarcerate some creatures who haven't even been accused of hurting anyone and call it "mental health care."

The supporters of the latter position know it is indefensible, which is why they need to use dishonest arguments equating it with easier-to-defend positions.

What's the status of federation between Lemmy/KBin and Misskey/Sharkey/Firefish/Iceshrimp? I just tried loading several Lemmy and Kbin posts in Sharkey and it doesn't work. Sad, but...

"Heard of a cool tech-bro-weeding interview technique the other day. A male and female engineer conduct the interview session together. If, when the female engineer asks the candidate a question, he directs his answer to the male engineer, then he's out. They said it happens a lot"

183231bcb,

@ned My high school did something similar when hiring teachers.

It's a weird school where teachers are hired by committees made up of approximately half students and half faculty, with each committee member getting an equal vote.

A good applicant directs their answers to the entire committee: much as a skilled teacher can direct answers at an entire class. A bad applicant directs all their answers as the principal, even if a student asked the question.
