Asking for a friend (literally): What happens to existing Windows 11 machines now? Do the get the spyware enhancement force-fed to them on the next Patch Tuesday? Is there an opt-out?

I may need to play the risk mitigation card with the business I do contract work for, since I occasionally touch a Win 11 laptop that's used in manufacturing and QA workflows.

@bananabob @lucky @phil_stevens , capitalist coercion tactics should really be illegal.

Things you probably don't know about me. #1 I love antarctic science and stories. So much that I have pretty much every book written about the heroic age. I also have this. It's a picture drawn by Dr. Edward Wilson, who accompanied Scott on both his polar expeditions. This is a picture drawn by Wilson as a gift to his sister on her birthday in around 1880. I love it! #antarctica #captainscott

@jonoabroad @craftygardennz , they mostly use a chemical spray these days, it seems to last longer and they don't have to do more runs to brush up the grit again that causes its own dangers and dust when dry.

No photos this time. They could be called Jono pancakes - they are a lot of work and look like a hot mess.

But now they appoint themselves as judge and jury and condemn some people to starvation.

Sometimes it feels like more investigative journalism was done for the Chris Rock/Will Smith slap than the crimes of a former President.

Antigrav,
@Antigrav@mastodon.nz avatar

@RickiTarr , I sometimes can grasp the difficulty with extremely clever criminals
but with someone that stupid the smack in the face really is unbearable.
(It makes the shortcomings of money all to obvious)

One from the archives. The night I tracked the Andromeda Galaxy which is the most distant object you can see with the naked eye as it moved low over the Southern Alps in New Zealand from where it never gets higher than five degrees. A bit of Ken Burns thrown in.

Three hydrangeas in a fence line shaded spot mysteriously dying in late summer. Enjoying contemplating which flowering native to replace them with. Possibly Brachyglottis B. repanda x B. greyii 'Leith Gold'?

Antigrav,
@Antigrav@mastodon.nz avatar

@astrokiwi , my hydrangeas started looking sad as well, too dry, I cought them in time and watered and they survived.
Plus it's finally been raining today after quite some time with lots of wind as well.

Tomorrow, and tomorrow and tomorrow, is my first night out (in years, to be honest, not that I care in the least). It's evening one of the Merry Widower's Club. It takes place in a burb called Petone (hint, not Pet-One).

The thought of this is making it all too real! What's worse? I'm not really a very good Solitary Man, though, I like the song, and you might not know by looking at me. So, by some sheer terror, and a cruel joke of the gods, I'm 64, and these peeps talk about dating after 40

Antigrav,
@Antigrav@mastodon.nz avatar

@Kenno , dating is such a weird/wonderful word/activity.
Next to my bed on top of a small drawer sits a chrome-plated contraption that states a two digit number and name of day.
Like a rolodex I can manually change them.
Today is the rare happening when I got a day ahead of myself, believing it was Wednesday for a little while and then discover the truth, it's (only) Tuesday and I've got an extra day.
A special day when all feels free, abundant and unconditional, just like love.
Enjoy your time.

    @DrALJONES , well written, though I don't like the ending much.
    For me it's still too much of a poor me story in the end and the 'poor me' vanishes into non-existence in comparison to the present ongoings.
    Still a brave stand and valuable analysis.
    Wish there were more from his corner and especially earlier than
    75/57 years ago and all the while in between.

    That's very astute of you to notice this.

    I do have a wide circle of friends and interests, and yes, you're correct, my friends provide me with good counsel.

    They know me; they know who I am, and they know of and appreciate my interests and spheres of influence.

    Advertisers do not.

    Yes, it's that simple.

    Antigrav,
    @Antigrav@mastodon.nz avatar

    @mjgardner @garystark , what sums it up for me is that I can live happily without any of my gadgets/advertising but would regret dearly not having my friends.
    (also let's have a close look at how capitalism has shaped this world and if we're able to escape the demise of both).
