The Great Depression (1929-1941) is widely considered to be the worst economic period in American history. And the very worst year during that time period was 1930. Now, what I'm about to show you, I'm not doing to hurt anyone. I just need people to understand that we are being gaslit.

1930 average annual income for 1 person:

  • $4,887

Let's see what that sort of salary - the "worst" in American history - translates to in 2023 dollars.

I'll just let you sit with this for a moment.

@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

@dr_jo_mue @ChemicalEyeGuy @LadyDragonfly they appear to be getting their info from this website, which is 3.5x higher than official government websites and doesn't cite its sources. Given every other site lists $1.5k as the average income for -household-, sounds like cherry picking to me.

They also fail to mention that average household income dropped 40% in 3 years.

I honestly can't believe some people are still so backwards they think shooters aren't for women.

A lot of women I know play shooters, and they're also way better than me 💀

Games are for everyone.

Artemis201,

@matt @gamingonlinux i love uncharted too! Though sadly the "shooter" part of the game is probably its worst quality. Other fun shooters I've played include Mass Effect and Fallout

Usually I tell people I study Kuiper Belt Objects, because that name is more easily recognized by the general public. But today I have learned that I can make Those People cringe just by saying the more proper name.

So, I study Trans-Neptunian Objects.

I was pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to this piece on TCGPlayer about in the
community.

I wanted to go beyond the surface-level problems and focus on how to overcome the inertia that holds back material change, even from well-intentioned people and organisations.

It all comes back to what Gandalf tells us:

"All we have to do is decide what to do with the time that is given us."

oof. Reading Artemis by Andy Weir, and I haven't read a book this libertarian since The Sword of Truth in high school. (I got about 2 pages into Ayn Rand so that one doesn't count).
Generous benevolent completely-normal-person trillionaire
deregulating space created this amazing (and perfectly safe) haven with no issues
you can sell alcohol to minors
you can have sex with minors (why is it always this?)
All the useful main characters thing unions are useless and just gobble up your money
1/

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

This is 100% a company town (benevolent company, of course) where all the money is in "slugs" (aka scrip), you literally can't leave unless the company lets you get on a ship, and they admit it's the biggest ponzi scheme ever (main revenue source is getting families to move their with their money).
And of course one of my favorite things: The bad guys are a criminal mafia and the good guys are fighting to keep this from turning into a corrupt company town. They literally say company town. 😂

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

even ignoring all the magical-christmas-land libertarianism, I can't recommend the book. The main character is a super judgmental complete disaster of a human being and I really don't understand why she's got 3 guys busting down her door to insist on being friends with her despite how she's only ever shit to them (oh yeah, she's really hot and also the only female character apart from admins).
The plot is kind of all over the place, with little story structure.

It's great, except for when I get up at 6am and they don't get up until 10 or 11. Sitting in my bedroom quietly, waiting for people to wake up so i can go into those rooms and get my art stuff. For 5 hours 😭

I grew up with parents who were fairly homophobic. I remember them calling Pride parades disgusting, being very opposed to marriage equality, and having very traditional views on gender roles.

Today I was visiting for Father's Day and my Da, completely unprompted, started talking about how horrible and frightening the anti-trans laws in the US south are.

It was a heartwarming moment and a great reminder of how change and growth are possible.

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

@Dunstable my parents the same!
I remember once when i was a kid they took us to a protest at an abortion clinic.
Now my mom's volunteering for pride, and my dad is complaining loudly "why can't they just let people be people?"
They're risking their relationships with some of their friends over this (especially all their church friends), because they think it's important.
I'm proud of them.

I took this today near Nederland. All the higher mountains still have snow on them, and it looks like some just got a new layer of snow last night. By my estimation, north sides will still be completely snow covered. South sides will be clear below 12k feet except for in gullies. Above 12k feet south sides will see some bare areas and some areas with drifts taller than people.

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

@c_dan4th @dominicvfx when my parents visited camping a few years ago, they officially closed all the trails near the camp ground to cross country skiing on July 4. There were plenty of trails still ski-able at that point

    “Mastodon had its chance and it blew it”

    I couldn’t agree with this post more. I had super high hopes, but I’m pretty convinced now that between the technical and social issues there’s not a good chance of mastodon being anything other than a tiny niche.

    I’m unlikely to go back to Twitter, and BlueSky seems unlikely to be a place I wanna hang out, so I guess this is still home for me for now. But I’m pretty sad things here aren’t going in a different direction.

    Artemis201,

    @jacob i completely agree on this post. The UI sucks, especially for onboarding, the main app in the app store is/was very glitchy, it's difficult to find anything or build a community, and the user base is very "my way or the highway".
    I've been here for 7 months and my follow list is long save carefully curated, but my Twitter feed is still more interesting overall. None of my favorite communities moved over here. Most of the content creators i like don't post here

    Dunstable, to mtg

    I've been watching some youtube videos that had themselves labeled as "prerelease guides" for the LOTR set, but they all focus too much on higher rarities.

    I don't need a prerelease guide to tell me that Gandalf the White is strong, I'm already playing that it I open it. Most of your prerelease deck is going to be commons, by definition - focus on those in your guides, people!

    Artemis201,
    @Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

    @Dunstable
    Have you checked out Limited Resources yet? I find their commons and uncommons review very useful.

    We’re in this weird place where diaspora Jews can’t talk about the possible eradication of LGBTQ+ rights in Israel to non-Jews because whenever we even mention ‘Israel’ we are shut down. We’re told it’s too controversial or that Israel is automatically the bad guy.

    ‘Israel’ is not a dirty word.

    LGBTQ+ Israelis, Palestinians, Jews, Christians, Muslims and Arabs all deserve equal protection and allyship.

    Artemis201,
    @Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

    @arielbchapman
    I see this very similarly to how some folks will see all the terrible shit happening in Texas or Florida, and say "ha you suckers deserve it because you voted for it".
    People forget that individuals are different from their government. That's just victim blaming, especially when the government is actively disenfranchising its own citizens.
