@actuallyautistic Have you seen this resource yet?

“The Autism Books by Autistic Authors Project is an (ongoing) attempt to catalogue all books — non-fiction and fiction — written about and related to autism by Autistic authors.”

There are over 1,000 books catalogued! Including mine and other authors I see in my feed here on Mastodon.

I binge-read The Murderbot Diaries (1-7) by @marthawells, and now there are no more out, and I'm feeling unmoored. I have a very long TBR list, but... I want more Murderbot. Difficulty with social reciprocity, comfort in rewatching favorite series, disliking eye contact or touch, and so much more. I get why reviews say this series is "one of the most human experiences you can have in sci-fi."

If you read large print or dyslexic font paperback books do you prefer this to be indicated on the cover (say on a banner at the top) to help you identify the accommodation?

I compiled a quick poll based on different perspectives I've read.

➡️ Please consider sharing to help me reach more readers.

@rayckeith @bookstodon Thank you, Ray! Absolutely. I think I’ll edit my original post as I meant to use those words and instead directly transcribed my notes.

@bookstodon many months ago I received feedback that some readers disliked how I labeled my large-font edition of Late Identified workbook. So I could do better, I asked.

The majority that participated reported they wanted the accommodation labeled on their paperback in a visible way.

“Large Print” or “Dyslexic Print.”

When I asked where, most said on the spine.

Did you know that if you live in the US, you can ask your to order ? Budget constraints exist, but if we don't ask for our bookstores and public libraries to carry books written by for autistics, many voices are missing from the digital & physical spaces. Please consider how your requests help diversify what is available publically and keep expanding your requests to include more voices.

Do you read large-print books?

What font size do you prefer? I've been reading about creating large-print books for the last several weeks (from publishers, authors, and consultants), and there seems to be a discrepancy in the minimum font size (size 16 vs. size 18). Now, I want to hear from readers. What is your preference?

I’m working on the large-print version of Late-Identified : A Starter Workbook. https://books2read.com/audhd

“I had zoomies."

"You can't say that. That's language they use to describe hyperactive dogs."

"I'm unbothered. I'm using it to describe myself as an intermittently hyperactive person."

Glossy cover versus matte. I hate the feel of the matte and my spouse loves it. I’m not sure which is better for the majority of us. Matte is what’s up on Amazon for now, but the color saturation of the glossy one is so appealing.

Two copies of Late-Identified AuDHD laid side by side. One is cover is glossy (front side) and one is matte (back side).

Autistics can be extroverts. There are extroverted autistics. Social-emotional reciprocity or social communication “deficits” sometimes outshine the deep need for social connection. Never assume because someone is autistic that they aren’t revitalized by social events or don’t love to socialize.

As a kid, I used to tell people, “I can’t do things too many times in a row.” I decided 2 days in a row was the most I could do any one pleasant or enjoyable extra thing—play a game? Get my favorite particular DQ treat? Somewhere past that threshold was routine & meltdowns if I could not have the same everyday or if I had too much fun. My current personal work is identifying maladaptive coping strategies for meltdown management or prevention. @actuallyautistic

I’m in the middle of a big move to a small rental & I almost missed Late-Identified AuDHD’s first birthday. ALMOST!

About thirty minutes to midnight I looked at my bookshelf, saw my 1st copy, remembered I forgot to do a cover reveal for the upcoming second edition, and decided to celebrate with a post and a Reese’s egg.

Moving, meltdowns, shutdowns, strain—none of that is fun—but this egg? Systematically peeling it is joy.

Finally! I have always wanted to play #Dungeonsanddragons. At 37 years old, a DM took me and a couple other people who have never played #DnD, and showed us the basics. I had so much fun and have a million questions and can’t wait to play again. Thank you to all DM who have the heart and patience to reach out and teach your peers. #audhd
