I have a small tiny "toy" solar system up (400w solar/200w battery) but looking for decent upgrades. Anyone in Ottawa have experience? I'm OK with some DIY but not sure about roof work on Bungalow water leaks etc.

I was hearing on the radio this morning (CBC 1) that eclipse glasses are very hard if not impossible to find now. Do not despair as a pinhole camera is trivial to make. Please look at instructions on line but basically cardboard box, cut hole, tape foil over hole pin prick it with pin, thumbtack. Put head inside you'll be able to see the sun on the other side. Failing even that, watch the thousands of pinhole camera views of the sun as it come through tree leaves!

Effective propaganda demands a captive audience. What happens when media giants decide what is news and what is advertised instead of governments?
Despite Chomsky's disdain for Walter Lippmann, they are both right.

Now, what happens if a grass roots movement arises to circumvent corporate control? Will there be an attempt to destroy these efforts? Threads anyone?

The term "Propaganda" gets an emotional response from many as connotations of state actors nefariously producing material to change people's minds yet the techniques used in propaganda are still used to this day in advertising. Using basic skills one can unwrap many of the tricks advertisers use to persuade people to buy their product.

Dianora,
@Dianora@ottawa.place avatar

@npilon Sure that's the other half. Those that have the money can roll out a lot of propaganda in a short time. So much for the concept of "The marketplace of ideas" which is commonly trotted out. The marketplace of ideas can only work when there is equal access to the media.

This petition seems like a good idea. Allow us to put up affordable hybrid solar systems to help us through power outages.

"Affordable Energy Ontario would have a mandate to do two things: support deep retrofits to homes and buildings across Ontario and oversee the creation of community sources of energy, known by the technical name of “distributed energy resources.”

Deep retrofits help to reduce the amount of electricity required to power a home. This has the benefit of lowering your Hydro bills while also reducing demand for the power grid. "

Interesting to think, there must be someone who is managing the energy supply in each region across N America who needs to ensure they're ready for when solar panels all along the path lose power and the conventional grid needs to fill in for three minutes or so.

I just want a search engine that works. I have zero need for a godawful "AI" hallucinating mansplainer in my results. Just… no.

Time to move off of DDG. What else is out there?

Edit: yes, it seems to be for real:

Feels like I'm going to lose this whole day to new networking/backup/NAS issues. A few things snowballing together here I suspect.

There was a silent app change on my NAS () I didn't know about which now is causing probs, simultaneous with a update and a new weird routing issue within my LAN.

Chipping away at it and hoping I'll still get to address an item or two from my to-do list for today.

Dianora,
@Dianora@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross It's either ARP or MTU. whistles innocently

Dianora,
@Dianora@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross ARP is a sneaky one if you are moving machines around physically! Also dup ARP. Those pesky encap and IPV6 is worse. That said there are RFCs to allow MTU 1500 locally with larger than 1500 on the upstream PPPoE link but I don't know if any of the local ISPs implement it for DSL. I doubt it since that's Bhell.

Dianora,
@Dianora@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross so-called "experts" used to block all ICMP for "security" and blocked PMTU. There are still sites that do that!

A tin of crushed pineapple, a packet of marshmallows and a hefty dose of pistachio dust and this delicious Georgia salad could be yours for lunch. 🤮
Optional extra: an entire tub of "whipped topping", whateverthefuck that is.
Americans: shut up about beans on toast forever.

@fkamiah17 I remember the jelloo salad craze of the 60s. Lime jello and coleslaw. It was revolting.

Good riddance.

Dianora,

@kelvin0mql @fkamiah17 The lime jello with mandarin orange slices with coleslaw were bad too.
At potlucks people would bring some vile "food" like this.

@deathbydenim As well as the legally mandated bell might I suggest an air horn? One can buy air horns meant for marine use and easily fixate on bike handle (two hose clamps) I can assure you they are very effective.

Dianora,
@Dianora@ottawa.place avatar

@deathbydenim Oh dear yes! Still that ring-ring-ring is only useful with pedestrians IMO. sigh

Dianora,

@deathbydenim I had a bus nearly cut me off dangerously, he sure stopped when I used the horn. Sad that we are the ones that have to be "aggressive" to survive. 😞
