As capitalists everywhere submit to their urge to fire everyone who writes or researches, in order to replace them with plausible-looking outputs from large language models: we are rapidly approaching a sort of civic apocalypse in which no text published in the name of a for-profit entity can be imagined to have any meaning, truth, or utility.

Government texts won't be far behind.

The entire corpus of official prose will come to be understood as a Potemkin edifice of disguised ipse lorem.

One of my holy grail software quests is a community tagging (aka ) plugin for . The idea is that users/readers could add to posts and/or images.

When WordPress was very young, there were several plugins in the WordPress plugins directory. Only one remains, long unmaintained and broken. https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-folksonomy/#description

If you know a for this, please sing out!

Boosts very welcome in hope of getting this seen by as many Wordpress mavens as possible.

It took me a regrettably long time to understand that "federated" in the Mastodon context means "connected to a small subset of the other servers out there, the list of which is never the same from day to day, but don't worry, the list is a secret anyway, and you can't even find out how big it is."

Likewise that the answer to "How am I supposed to find stuff?" is actually "search for hashtags, but you'll only get the most recent results from the secret list of federated servers."

Been noticing a new trend in communications from your health care provider? Lots of texts, lots of email reminders? You’re being ‘nudged’. The advent of digital devices and communications/connectivity has led to the use of ‘nudges’ by the medical community - a derivative of behavioral economics. That led one doctor to write this: The Soft Tyranny of Modern Medicine https://compactmag.com/article/the-soft-tyranny-of-modern-medicine

@CharlieMcHenry I just ignore all that shit until I am provided with an email address that my primary care provider reads and replies to.

She's not wrong. You can't build a small independent business without social media and because of the #pornocalypse, nothing you do in the adult space or even vaguely tangential to it is welcome on social media. It's a fatal conundrum.

I just saw somebody come HARD for a friend on here for using in its reclaimed sense. Not my fight at all, but I checked Wikipedia to refresh my memory, and yup, this has been a bitter fight within the gay community for at least 80 years. For somebody to come slamming in red hot on the "It's a slur!" side without even acknowledging that there's an ancient good-faith dispute is bold at best, disingenuous at worst, and shitty behavior any way you look at it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queer#Reclamation

    Humans anthropomorphize EVERYTHING.

The only theory of mind most of us have is the one that we've honed since we were tiny babies trying to figure out the big people. Naturally we apply that one theory of mind to everything we meet: our pets, wild animals, our computers, and our weird AIs.

I don't think this is a bad thing for anybody except a scientist. Scientists never stop shaming everybody else for anthropomorphizing. Fuck off with that, scientists. We're humans, it's what we do.

Using websites in 2023 without an Ad blocker is like wrestling an octopus. Entirely unusable.

From an accessibility standpoint I fail to see how it’s not illegal. So many things steal focus from assistive technologies.

I challenge you to spend a day trying to use the web without seeing what’s on the screen, with only what your OS provides. And no ad blocker.

Or with only voice controls, or any other assistive tech. If more organisations did this, they’d soon see how actively hostile they’re being to those with accessibility needs.

Accessibility should be part of the design, testing, QA, and UAT for your website or product.

And don’t give me “but how do smaller organisations manage that?” - if this were law, within 6 months you could get off the shelf themes for WordPress or Wix or Bootstrap that manage it all for you.

It’s not a technical problem. It’s political will.

    ErosBlog,
    @ErosBlog@kinkyelephant.com avatar

@SecurityWriter My counterpoint is , I guess. If you really like the "five giant websites, each filled with screenshots of the other four" future, adblockers are the way to guarantee it. It's fine to correctly say "that shit doesn't work" about sites that drank too much Koolaide, but if we throw the open-web baby out with the adtech bathwater, we won't have any sites left at all.

Thus: http://www.erosblog.com/2022/06/01/no-adblocking-on-erosblog/ -- "Welcome to hell. We live here now."

@fraying What? No! That's not it at all. Based on my experience offering user feedback, correct response is "Luser, if you care about that functionality all you need to do is write the function yourself and recompile from a clean Kyberzootes suite making sure to set the Warboggle controtes with a string of etherial fruit decompositors. Of course this only works on a virtual machine sandboxed in a software environment that you don't have access to, but how is that our problem? Learn to code!"

@jwildeboer Fuck no! Twenty years ago my instant gut reaction to the Gmail proposition was "I don't want an email account with a company that wants to scan my emails and sell ads against them" (which was their original business model) and nothing they've done since has made their "free email in exchange for living in their data panopticon" deal look any better.
