Geneva was looking a bit gorgeous this morning on the way to work so I had to stop. Not a bad way to start the day.

Tonight's sour dough pizza will be topped with, not one, but two, roasted heads of garlic. With a generous serving of chilli, and maybe a touch of Pecorino cheese. You may now be envious.

Oh, we're back. My instance (wandering.shop) had a holiday as well. Anything that happened in the last 24 hours was not my fault and anything I said, I didn't. Also, sorry if any responses got lost in the ether, I can't remember what I was doing so they're just gone forever.

Hope all your festives were adequately festive. Let's just agree to start again. Love ya. Bye...

I saw this a little while ago and it really resonated. A couple of years ago, I wanted to get back into music. I hadn't played seriously for 25 years. I answered an ad looking for a bass player and they sent some music and asked me to put some bass on it. I was not used to home recording. I listened back to it recently and it was awful, which is probably why it didn't work out. (1/2)

HarryTuttle,

... A year ago I finally found a band and I just listened back to the evolution in both my playing and recording, and it is night and day. I can actually play and the recording is getting better.
This year I played 2 concerts, 1 in Switzerland and 1 in France.
I could have stopped. Instead, I had a lot of fun. (2/2)

@jynersolives I'm old enough to have sat in the cinema for the first ones, and this is without any hesitation the best/my favourite.

THREE THINGS CIS PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TRANS PEOPLE:

  1. We aren't rare. There are twice as many of us as there are police officers in America.

  2. We aren't new. There are historical examples of us in every society, in every nation, on every continent on earth, since the beginning of recorded history.

  3. We aren't going away. In 1933, one of the first things the Nazi party did after seizing power, was burn down the Institut für Sexualwissinschaft, the largest repository in the world of trans histories and trans academic research. So if you've ever thought trans people are rare or new, blame a Nazi.

HarryTuttle,
@HarryTuttle@wandering.shop avatar

@LadyDragonfly I know that generally there are a lot more trans people than assumed, but I was a bit surprised by your first point - possibly because I think the US has a ridiculous number of police - do you have a link to the stats? Thanks!

I’m really starting to lose my mind on every person who says “but they/them isn’t grammatically correct” because yes, the fuck it is. It literally is. It actually, literally, is grammatically correct. It is, in fact, so grammatically correct that it predates he/him or she/her.

But then I’m suddenly arguing based on a premise set by people who expressly do not care about me – over a language that constantly contradicts itself and (thankfully) has no governing body. And this is how I lose.

HarryTuttle,
@HarryTuttle@wandering.shop avatar

@ryanhoulihan Apart from them obviously being wrong and probably also having used they/them when they weren't sure about someone's gender without realising it (as I just did), if you want to pass the Cambridge certificate English exam these days, you need to use it.

Socks come in pairs. If you put a sock on your left foot, the other sock of the pair instantly becomes the “right sock,” no matter where it is located in the universe.

Evidence that I:
• was in a band
• pre-date colour*
• played a Fender
• had long hair
• had my fly down for the entire damn gig and for this bloody photo in the local paper!!

*photo taken sometime in the early 90s.

@dgar Cool old photo. So, what were you called and where were you playing? It would be wild if I'd ever seen you.

HarryTuttle,
@HarryTuttle@wandering.shop avatar

@dgar That was a little too far north, even for me in the 90s. Still a cool photo.

Starting a new thing: a link dump of bits of news that I find useful and interesting. A better and more productive way of sharing stuff.

I will still be sharing stuff here, but this is a good way of keeping stuff central

@motomatters Excellent idea. I got off the other site a while ago but bike news/community has been quite limited here. Would be good to see a few more people crossing over.

    @Terra We don't really need that many people in our little worlds. I'm sure there are those close to you who love you - hang on to them and don't give any energy to the rest. Tolerate the rest if you really have to, but make your new family around those where the love is honest. All power to you.

    A question for the Mastodon hive mind. Do you know of any + crossovers about future perspectives? Leaning more, or at least, based more, on the science?

    I have an insane idea for a project that could make my worlds* collide... or never happen. Thoughts?

    *Harry is my scifi writing (trying) alter ego, by day I'm an actual scientist.

    HarryTuttle,
    @HarryTuttle@wandering.shop avatar

    @NicoleCRust That's a good one. I'd forgotten about that. I was so close to even submitting something to them a while ago. If I recall, that's leaning a bit more / than what I'm thinking. I want to push scientists out of their comfort zone.

    HarryTuttle,
    @HarryTuttle@wandering.shop avatar

    @mattixmash Yes, that's the idea, to keep it as close to scientifically possible. I think that this is maybe pushing it further than I was thinking, but Egan would be a perfect candidate to work with. We can dream.

    HarryTuttle,
    @HarryTuttle@wandering.shop avatar

    @mastodonmigration That sounds cool as well. Maybe my next project. Having sasid tha, I'm pretty sure there are plenty of works like that but this morning my mind is blank.

    Why complexity in biology is different from how we traditionally think about physics.

    Best description I've seen:

    It is often said that biological systems, such as cells, are ‘complex systems’. A popular notion of complex systems is of very large numbers of simple and identical elements interacting to produce ‘complex’ behaviours. The reality of biological systems is somewhat different. Here large numbers of functionally diverse, and frequently multifunctional, sets of elements interact selectively and nonlinearly to produce coherent rather than complex behaviours.

    https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12432404/

    HarryTuttle,
    @HarryTuttle@wandering.shop avatar

    @NicoleCRust I've always thought of biological systems as "messy" rather than complex. Messy in the sense that there are so many things going on and we don't have a handle on them, how they behave and how they interact. But I'm a physicist.

    HarryTuttle,
    @HarryTuttle@wandering.shop avatar

    @NicoleCRust I only have my brain to judge things and that's always a mess. I'm always impressed by people in your field, and similar, who manage to make sense of this. I live in a world of simple creatures.

    Hello! I'm a science fiction writer... & quantum science writer... & researcher in Geneva, Switzerland.

    Also, rather fond of music - playing bass & listening - mostly alternative, whatever that means, oh, & motorcycles just to mix it up a little. And also travel... particularly me in Iceland.

    @Virginicus What's a quantum science writer? Good question. It's maybe best summed up as that probabilistic state you're in when you have both written and not written about science.

    Unfortunately, most of the time when I look it appears I have not written.

    Also, my day job is quantum physics.
