@fkamiah17 Still raining here, but slowly brightening.
Have a good weekend (hopefully where it's also not raining?)

Electoral Commission chief claims photo ID requirement for voting didn't cause 'any major problems' - https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2024/may/02/local-elections-2024-latest-results-live-tory-conservative-labour-lib-dem-green-south-blackpool-mayor-london-west-midlands-tees-valley?page=with:block-66349fc78f08f2f07401a1b2#block-66349fc78f08f2f07401a1b2 clueless: the main issue is how many people didn't even bother to try to vote because of 'voterID

Henrysbridge,
@Henrysbridge@toot.wales avatar

@glynmoody

This is so - deeper analysis and studies needed, especially looking at which demographics didn't bother to vote compared to previous elections.

I bet I can guess the outcome...

The Green Party has taken Colchester from Labour;

This stunning rendition of "Make Me A Channel of Your Peace", sung by the one and only Sinead O'Connor, which I'd never heard before; and

Brian, 86 years old, who helped stop the Home Office refugee transport in Peckham today: "I'll never be too old to fight for my community"

FYI, for those considering a Tory vote in the English local elections today because you can't support an alternative..

Despite the common wisdom, it is perfectly okay to stay home and abstain

Things you can do instead..

●Write a nasty letter to the Daily Heil about trans people
●Count your money
●Salute the flag
●Share some racialism
●Harrass a tenant
●Book a tacky cruise
●Moan about kids these days
●Snitch on a neighbour
●Hit a child

Endless possibilities!

Henrysbridge,

@fkamiah17 @Greenseer

Confession time - we do go on cruises, and enjoy them greatly (sorry - very environmentally bad of us, I know, but my other half can't fly and we still want to travel))

Yes, there are types we wouldn't normally associate with, and we don't.

Yes, many of the ships are a bit "gross" (especially the US lines)

Yes, at the end of some longer cruises, there is some "flag-shagging". Will take my own supply of Y Ddraig Goch next time 🤪

Please don't think too badly of us.🙏

Henrysbridge,
@Henrysbridge@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 @Greenseer

That's fine. I expected severe criticism for that confession and I accept it.

I know I've badly blotted my copybook now - if you no longer wish to be associated with me, I understand. 🙁

Home Office to detain seekers across UK in shock operation - https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/apr/28/home-office-to-detain-asylum-seekers-across-uk-in-shock-rwanda-operation "thought to have been timed to coincide with local elections" cruel and cynical, like the in general...

Henrysbridge,
@Henrysbridge@toot.wales avatar

@glynmoody As I noted earlier - this nicely gives a "heads-up" so those potentially affected will "go to ground". Anybody like to bet on some with full and correct permissions to live and work here being "rounded up"?

Home Office to detain asylum seekers across UK in shock Rwanda operation

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/apr/28/home-office-to-detain-asylum-seekers-across-uk-in-shock-rwanda-operation

The ‘surprise visit’ has been somewhat spoilt I suspect. but no doubt the Tories will consider it a useful boost for their local election hopefuls.

I wonder how the good citizens of Glasgow and Scotland will receive the Home Office?

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/may/14/a-special-day-how-glasgow-community-halted-immigration-raid

Henrysbridge,
@Henrysbridge@toot.wales avatar

@Wen Given this "heads up", those potentially affected will (a) not turn up to scheduled meetings and/or (b) "go to ground".

All it needs now is for somebody fully documented and with permissions to stay etc. to be "rounded up" (and the proverbial will really hit the fan.

The fact that the current Senedd and Scottish Parliament administrations are turning in on themselves with internal problems isn't helping. Their first duties are to the people of Wales and Scotland.

@MadeyeTheCarnaptious @fkamiah17 It's the "Oliver Twist" model.

Henrysbridge,

@MadeyeTheCarnaptious @fkamiah17

From the Wales perspective, this is of interest:
https://stateofwales.com/2020/03/wales-fiscal-future-public-finances-within-the-uk-independence/

The last few paragraphs sum up the situation nicely. The "Oliver Twist" model is as deliberate as the workhouse in preventing prosperity.

Henrysbridge,
@Henrysbridge@toot.wales avatar

@MadeyeTheCarnaptious @AngleseyStick @fkamiah17 That's interesting - is it the same argument "The Republic of Ireland is too "poor" to afford reunification", or is it that NI would be a "drag" on the Republic? I note a 2022 poll putting reunification at around 65% in The Republic.
