Buying abandoned stasis lockers at auction has always been a gamble. You dream of scoring the one that will be full of gold bars or priceless artworks. More often it’s 500 obsolete electronic gadgets, or more jackfruit than you can possibly eat before it all rots. I stopped bidding after I won the one that contained you. I’ve treasure enough for a lifetime now, my child.

OpenAI have stolen enough Māori data that it can transcribe, speak, and translate te reo Māori quite well. Microsoft is rolling out Copilot which will do all these things in te reo Māori because they use OpenAI. New Zealand needs to tax foreign corporations profiting off of te reo Māori and give that money to the Māori language communities. Big tech already evade paying their fair share of taxes, this is only logical.

In case you are interested in .

Started today with 3 chapters in Diversity and Complexity by Scott E. Page. I love his materials on , and this work is also really accessible.

Also bought the paper version of The Unaccountability Machine. I already have the audio book, but I miss the ability to stick labels when I am on my bike at the spots I need to re-listen and use. 😬 Interesting, good for more knowledge on , and fun to listen.

Signal strongly opposes the newest proposal in Europe.

Let there be no doubt: we will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees.

This proposal--if passed and enforced against us--would require us to make this choice.

It's surveillance wine in safety bottles.

IMO we need to dismantle the surveillance advertising biz model & the surveillance and centralized control at its heart.

But this doesn't do that. Instead, it advocates for 'transparency' w/o accountability + inexplicably ONLY names e2ee encryption as a "risk" to children.

What's clear here, broadly, are the sharp limits of shareholder-driven activism when it comes to curtailing a toxic-yet-profitable business model.

First page of the proposal, which says, "

Esp now, in 2024 when Jessica Burgess is living in prison bc Facebook turned over messages detailing her accessing reproductive care in a state where this had been made illegal.

I'd love to work w Francis + others on REAL solutions. & I'm frustrated that so much of the purported "solution space" is occupied by toothless, even dangerous proposals that are implicitly limited by unwillingness to touch the (profitable) business models core to these harms.

Having given up on Facebook years ago because of my concerns about privacy, I rarely login now.

This is a heads up about Meta, privacy, and your data.

From 26 June 2024, Facebook will use your photos, posts, and other info to train its AI.

You can opt out...but Meta has intentionally made it complicated!

Here is a detailed “How to opt out” with screenshots.

On the next page, select "Information about objections and how you can object on Facebook and hit the "Enter" key. Scroll down to "How can I submit an objection?" and click on the link to "here" in the first sentence of this section "You can submit an objection by following the instructions here..." On the next page, entitled "Managing your information and submitting objections” click on the radio button next to “Yes”. When you click on the radio button for “Yes”, you will finally be taken to the form where you can object “Object to your information being used for Al at Meta”. Complete your “Country of residence” and “Email address” fields and move on to the “Please tell us how this processing impacts you.” field. Obviously how you complete this is your personal preference, but I have written this: "My photos are personal and contain images of my face associated with my IRL name. This data could be used to generate “deep fake” images using my likeness, if it is included in Al training. I further object to captions being used as these may contain personal information some of which may be associated with children.
“Meta processing my posts, photos and their captions, the messages I send to Al, and whatever other data Meta decides to scrape, invades my privacy as a private citizen and feeds into a technology which threatens the future of our planet by its insatiable appetite for limited resources, e.g. energy and water.” I have not completed the section entitled "Please provide any additional information that could help us review your objection.”
You will then be asked to confirm your email address via an OTP. Almost immediately, I received a response from Facebook, honouring my request: Support message. Today at 16:17. Our reply Hi Jayne, We've reviewed your request and will honor your objection. This means your request will be applied going forward. If you want to learn more about generative Al, and our privacy work in this new space, please review the information we have in Privacy Center. facebook.com/privacy/genai This inbox cannot accept incoming messages. If you send us a reply, it won't be received. Thanks, Privacy Operations We may use your data for personalisation, innovation, research and other purposes described in our Privacy Policy.

The owner of the facility was famous. Well, Meta famous if you know what i mean. Famous for being a famous rich asshole, dedicating his twilight years to outliving all the other famous rich assholes.

Collectively the six trillionaire oligarchs who had built their burrows—each on their agreed post-apocalypse continental domains—had all hired the same experts to design those enclaves. Location: deep in the ancient stable rock of a continental craton. Supplies: Food, water and medicines to last a century, until farming could resume. Knowledge: a full archive of the Internet. Technology: every conceivable machine and the parts and tools to maintain them. Serfs: entirely separate accommodation for necessary technical staff, and hibernation for many more. Security: no, not the armed-thugs-with-shock-collars you’re thinking of; spider drones are what’s in favour with apocalypse consultants this decade.

When the Event came it blindsided even the Six. While everyone was watching the climate fall apart, the brown dwarf grazing the Oort cloud went unnoticed, obscured by the glare of the Starlink Belt. A million comets had their orbits stirred up by the visitor. It only took one, impacting in the south atlantic ocean, to tip the biosphere into chaos predicted to last three to five decades.

The balloon was up, the Six and their families executed the well rehearsed Plan Scram, and settled into their cosy bunkers to wait out the Dark Times. Serfs (sorry, “employees” in this decade) likewise. Human security personnel (unknowingly already inoculated with a delayed death sentence once their mechanoid replacements were online) set about battening down the hatches and bringing up the Evironment (2.0).

“Hey Sarge, this droid won’t boot!”

“Yeah this one too. What does ‘502 License server unreachable’ mean?”

Everyone lucid in the West is freaking out about the rise of fascist thinking, well, everywhere.

Why? Didn't we defeat this obscenity 80 years ago after much suffering? Why is it resurging?

The problem is not that people don't learn from history (they don't but it's another issue), the problem is that fascism is always with us. Since the dawn of time, and forever more.

All fascism requires is:

  1. ignorance
  2. indecency
  3. a demagogue to yoke these walnut brains and ride them to power

Everyone knows that GPT-4o is just OpenAI getting another step change amount of data right? It's hype after hype to scrape as much data as possible. That's the only way this plays out based on the underlying technologies. So don't use it unless you consent to streaming your audio and visual data straight to them to profit from.

Repeat COVID-19 vaccinations elicit antibodies that neutralize variants, other viruses: People who were repeatedly vaccinated for COVID-19 — initially receiving shots aimed at the original variant, followed by boosters and updated vaccines targeting variants — generated antibodies capable of neutralizing a wide range of SARS-CoV-2 variants and even some distantly related coronaviruses.
