Here's a brilliant neologism: "slop", for text generated entirely by LLMs and published, unwanted, on the Internet

> Watching in real time as "slop" becomes a term of art. the way that "spam" became the term for unwanted emails, "slop" is going in the dictionary as the term for unwanted AI generated content

@simon As a French speaker, I must add that 'slop' in French means 'briefs' (colloquial, childish): https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/slop

Pollen in Luxembourg, the birch count is frightening (as I'm allergic, it's not a great time at the moment).

Does anyone know anything about 'standard' pollen concentrations? Do trees release more pollen to increase* their chances of survival in a world in climate crisis?

MarieVC,

@pvonhellermannn I think the hashtag is a really good place to unite, to confront the climate crisis but also the solutions. Thank you for setting it up.

@thepoliticalcat I did a bit of research this morning and apparently there's a link between carbon concentration and pollen concentration. I'd like to understand the mechanism better.

MarieVC,
@MarieVC@social.coop avatar

@thepoliticalcat "Scientists say intensified seasonal allergies are among the first wave of anticipated health impacts from global warning, along with greater exposure to infectious diseases. (...) There’s some evidence that increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are making pollen more potent, too."

*During a presentation with the Directeur de l'Administration de la nature et des forêts in Luxembourg in 2022, I discovered that the same oak tree could have different genetic material depending on its branches, to increase its capacity to adapt (spatial orientation and climate impact). Nature never ceases to amaze me.

Does anyone know (personally, professionally, or otherwise) of municipal regulations requiring green space on commercial property? US is most useful, but I'll take anything, and from green roof to potted plants by the door.

Please boost, and please suggest hashtags that might help!

@aehdeschaine It's part of Brussels' Good Living plan: https://www.brusselstimes.com/284575/brussels-state-of-mind-an-urban-development-revolution-is-brewing

As the article is behind a paywall, here are some useful points (excerpts):

"Good Living, one vision that will be applied to all of Brussels, looks to improve the quality of life for all the city's residents. The focus lies on three key principles covering all areas of living spaces: public space, urbanism and the habitability of the city."

MarieVC,
@MarieVC@social.coop avatar

@aehdeschaine

"'When a building, whether it is a house, office or hotel, is renovated or built, or a square or a street is created in the region, we will always first consider the public space and then look at how we can integrate things around this through several principles that we are now concretely setting in stone,' [Pascal] Smet said."

MarieVC,
@MarieVC@social.coop avatar

@aehdeschaine

"When it comes to buildings, the focus will be on renovation and new buildings can only be demolished and reconstructed when no other option is available. "Of course, we have to build additional housing, otherwise rents will rise even higher, but we have to do this in a smart way by integrating them into the green and public spaces."."

MarieVC,
@MarieVC@social.coop avatar

@aehdeschaine For example, while working on our proposals, we discovered that in Switzerland, in some cantons, there was a demolition permit, so that renovation was the rule. For trees/nature, I discovered the concept of the rights of nature, like here in Spain: https://www.science.org/content/article/lagoon-effectively-person-says-spanish-law-s-attempting-save-it

MarieVC,
@MarieVC@social.coop avatar

@aehdeschaine

"When a site is being redesigned or created, 30% of the space has to be made into open space, of which three- quarters has to be "open ground". Benches, toilets and water fountains will be systematically integrated into this space to make it "truly liveable," while advertising will be largely prohibited in public places."

On top of that, I caught covid for the first time since the start of the pandemic. So far, the symptoms are manageable, apart from the toothache, why didn't anyone warn me?

Yesterday's anti-science bingo. Started with a discussion with a herbalist who admitted that she didn't know much about it, but that "the body says when it doesn't like something", "and 90% of illnesses are psychological, like covid", "I'm not vaccinated", "and now they're selling us an asymptomatic heatwave, the weather's fine, where do you see the heatwave?".

What do we do when false certainties are more reassuring than facts?

What are the evidence-based recommendations about booster after covid infection?

In Luxembourg, the vaccine is available from doctors and pharmacies, depending on demand. If I have to wait 3 months, it will be in January, when no-one will be looking for the vaccine. I read that the CDC says that the booster can be obtained as soon as recovery is complete. Any data/info on this?

Thank you!

Finished this project (early) this morning as a gift for a friend, the first time I've quilted a larger piece, really enjoyed the process, including making the bias to match the main fabric and even doing all the finishing by hand so the jacket is reversible. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to sew the pockets, which is against my principles*.

Pattern: Tamarack Jacket (Grainline Studio)
Fabrics: Merchant & Mills, Liberty fabrics

Photo of a quilted jacket, the other side, in a blue-toned fabric. The seams are finished with a hand-sewn bias, which gives the jacket structure.
Photo of the process of quilting the pieces that make up the jacket (here the sleeves). The cotton fabrics are sandwiched around a batting fabric, pinned and held together with provisional hand stitches.

Our house martins are back, and this is the first morning we've heard their distinctive calls. Soon we'll be enjoying our first coffee on the terrace, watching them. Our flat is on the same level as their nests, which are currently occupied by sparrows. In previous years, they had been able to reclaim them. Here we go for the next few months, living to the rhythm of our house martins!

Yesterday I took part in a second day of citizens' deliberation organised by Real Deal (Brussels), this time with a feminist lens and the tools of the Women Engage for a Common Future team.

I wasn't able to attend the afternoon of proposals writing, but the morning of discussions and networking was fascinating and energising. It's so good to work on what brings us together, while drawing on our differences!
