Singular “they” dates back to 1375. It predates singular “you” and it’s old enough to have been spelled with a thorn.

Objections to singular “they” have nothing to do with grammar - and everything to do with imposing a rigid, exclusionary gender binary.

Some men are so heavily invested in patriarchy that they interpret opposition to it as categorical man-hating.

Cis men get Viagra, testosterone, and penile prostheses. Cis women get breast augmentations.

It’s ALL gender-affirming care.

Yet so many people’s objections to gender-affirming care don’t kick in until it goes against the gender binary. 🧐

If the Pope inching ever-so-infinitesimally toward acknowledging trans folks’ humanity sends you into a “faith crisis”…

It may be time to acknowledge that your real religion is patriarchal cisheteronormativity, not Catholicism.

Studies show that surgeons who play video games for >3 hours/week display improved surgical skills, with 37% fewer errors and 27% faster completion.

So the 200 hours I plan to spend on this should keep my skills sharp for the for the next 16 months or so.

You’re welcome, patients!

No, sex work is not “selling your soul.”

Selling your soul would be denying your paying customers necessary medical care and making record profits off of human suffering.

Like insurance companies and their executives do.

The people who use “virtue signaling” as a pejorative… are people to whom the concept of empathy is so foreign, they assume all displays of it are performative.

Life is FAR too short to engage with people for whom empathy is that foreign a concept.

‘TIS THE SEASON TO SMASH PATRIARCHY.

Presenting the Smash Patriarchy Advent Calendar.

Every day this season, I will pull one reason to reject patriarchy from this piggy bank… until December 25, when I symbolically bash the crap out of this piggy bank with a hammer. Come back here each day’s reason to reject patriarchy 👀

Healthcare professionals are trained to write in a manner that is dry and objectively descriptive. Thus, we avoid emotionally charged language. We are trained to write nothing that we wouldn’t want read out loud in a courtroom.

So when someone describes an aspect of healthcare as “mutilation” or any other emotionally charged term… raise your skepticism. If the author has medical credentials, these terms suggest that they are not writing in their capacity as healthcare professionals.

Patriarchy offers privilege for few, and fulfillment for none.

The clitoris has a prominent, consistent anatomical location among its owners (many of whom are humans capable of providing guidance).

It has 10,280 nerve fibers, all dedicated to the pleasure of its owner.

The framing of the clitoris and its significance as some kind of vague “mystery” or “myth” is weaponized incompetence.

“Masculinity has become tied to an unrealistic individualism. Men are taught they can do everything themselves without help… Beneath this facade, there is a deeply felt lack of permission to be authentic and to show the complex inner world in which they live. This lack of permission can become so internalized that men shut off their emotions altogether, hiding them from others and even from themselves.”

Patriarchy and its tacit expectations make us poorly communicative emotional lightweights.

Ope, forgot yesterday’s Advent Calendar…

12/9/23: More intimacy opportunities.

Arousal and intimacy are exquisitely context-dependent, including the mental load of determining what domestic tasks need doing. A burden of responsibilities and pending chores is not a turn-on. But thoughtfully taking initiative to address these makes a context more favorable to intimacy.

(I make a point of telling this to my boomer patients who like to joke that “I get erections but no opportunity to use them.”)

SmashPatriarchyAdventCalendar 12/15/23. Patriarchy is the reason women’s pants lack pockets:

“The lack of independence and responsibilities that restricted [women] to the home led designers to assume they did not need pockets. Men carried all the money, documents and keys —therefore, they were awarded with apparel functionality.”

My favorite physician-author? @JL_Lycette

I finally finished “The Committee Will Kill You Now.”

The courage, humanity, and transparency with which she describes the harsh, disturbing realities of the culture in which medicine is practiced and taught - and how it affects us in the system - makes her work must-read for

I recommend it wholeheartedly and appreciate @JL_Lycette for her work ❤️
