Twitter is like a top of the range Lamborghini but you’re trapped in the boot full of broken bottles and it’s being driven over a cliff by a madman.

Mastodon is like sitting in the back of a dilapidated VW camper van, with knackered suspension, no air conditioning, but lots of nice passengers having a sing-song and there’s a dog called Mr. Snuffles.

@phil_smith I demand pictures of Mr. Snuffles now! Where is the good boy?!

Mutual assured destruction is clearly the motivation for car buying these days.

Ultimately, we're all going to have cars that fire missiles.

fans: Which of these platforms will allow me to buy a DRM (or generally vendor-lock-in) free ebook purchase? / / /

MichalBryxi,
@MichalBryxi@veganism.social avatar

@flameeyes Bookmarked for later reading, but I think I get the gist. There is a big step from "broken, because software sucks" and "broken, because the corporates want it broken".

MichalBryxi,
@MichalBryxi@veganism.social avatar

@flameeyes Also I'm not sure if the terms are correct, but basically I want an ePub that's readable anywhere. I got some *.asmc or something that required to install some Adobe stuff to be able to read it. It did not work. I was not able to use the ebook.

MichalBryxi,
@MichalBryxi@veganism.social avatar

@flameeyes Is there a way to see the type of lock I'm buying on Kobo? I bought one there earlier and got DRM locked even though it was promised to be free before the purchase.

MichalBryxi,
@MichalBryxi@veganism.social avatar

@flameeyes @geekupdated I bought on Kobo before. The promise was DRM free, but no way to check up until after purchase. It wax not DRM free. Or I don't understand how to read that platform.

MichalBryxi,
@MichalBryxi@veganism.social avatar

@flameeyes This is super useful. I already bumped into this answer in another thread. Need to stay vigilant, but it's possible to avoid the trap 🪤

@mimsical If the employer wants workers in the office, then this expense should be on the employer 😶‍🌫️

It's always interesting to me when I see people talking about how much less engagement they get here vs their history on other places.

And then I look at their account and they hardly follow anyone, and rarely reply except to people who are responding to their posts.

Like, I don't wanna tell anyone how they should do social media... but my own observation is that this place is less a broadcast forum and more of a conversation. And folks don't like one-sided conversations.

MichalBryxi,
@MichalBryxi@veganism.social avatar

@MsHearthWitch I get way more e engagement here. And I don't think I'm doing anything differently.

I just learnt that apparently the maximum length of an URL in Chrome (and IE, but come on…) is 2083 characters, 65536 for Firefox, and 80000 for Safari.

I wonder why any URL would be longer than 2083 characters though, and why the gap between the lowest and highest value is so big.

MichalBryxi,
@MichalBryxi@veganism.social avatar

@pierstoval 2083 is not that much. If you want to persist more complex application state into URL then you might hit limits. Think complex filters or even current state of UI. This is IMO most of the time the correct place to put those as:

  • It survives full page reload
  • It is shareable
  • It is bookmarkeable
  • It works (well) with browser history

@maxleibman @TheDailyBurble Right? Sure it can get worse, but ever since SEO experts entered the market having an in-brain ad-blocker to filter out all the unnecessary fluff has been a must to keep using the internet.

Climate Disaster

Earlier this week, New York received an unexpected and unwelcomed 10+ inches of rain in only a few hours.

A previous once in a lifetime event, flash flooding around the world is becoming commonplace as the heated atmosphere holds, and drops, more moisture in a single event.

Some parts of New York received up to three months or more worth of rain.

See the effects it brought to NYC.
