Virtually Real

"We each live in our own perceptual universe, no two sensoria are exactly alike, but, because we all live in the same physical universe, we imagine it is a shared whole, its entirety common to us all. But our perceptual worlds are as unique as we each are, each unique perceptual world adding to the creation of the whole of reality."

Once you know that someone genuinely and sincerely believes in quackery - such as, but not limited to: homeopathy, astrology, magical gemstones ... - do you, too, struggle with taking their opinions on rational questions seriously still?

If so, do you - and if so how - overcome this in professional settings?

Oozenet, (edited )
@Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb This question is really, should thought crime be a thing? To which I say, treat others as you would have them treat you. Do you want others to judge you for your weird beliefs? Then don't judge them. And yes, we all have weird beliefs.

I'd like to suggest that it is way more important to make decisions about people based on their actions than their beliefs.

Oozenet,
@Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb If you are to suggest that people who believe such things cannot be taken seriously in any way then you need to strike a lot of people from your list of people you can take seriously, e.g Isaac Newton believed in magical stones, as he wrote way more alchemy than natural philosophy.

To take another example from your list, two thirds of the population of the Earth believe in astrology. So it is pretty bold to be in a minority position and be proposing to write off the majority.

Oozenet,
@Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb Another aspect is that I am guessing you aren't an expert in the things you mentioned and that you in fact haven't spent any time applying your preferred way of knowing i.e. the scientific method, to the investigation of them. And yet you are happy to declare them to be bogus. Are you being true to your own principles?

PSA: we have seen the vague viral reports alleging a Signal 0-day vulnerability.

After responsible investigation we have no evidence that suggests this vulnerability is real nor has any additional info been shared via our official reporting channels.

Been hearing whispers all weekend, some from people who I'd definitely listen to, of a remote execution 0day in the Signal desktop and possibly also mobile app. Mitigation is supposedly to disable link previews (under settings->chats).

I have no more details. What I've heard doesn't completely make sense, but disabling link previews should be at worst harmless and seems prudent until this is clarified.

That is the second time I've taken my new duck food out to the park and there was already someone there feeding them (the duck feeding access point is quite small unless you just want pigeons to get it all) 😠

    One reason I really want to migrate from to is due to the never-ending drama on Mastodon instances. It is impossible to keep up with who is defederating from who these days, and why (sometimes it is good reasons, sometimes it is really petty BS).

    Maybe it's time to go back to the site formerly known as . Maybe there's no fighting it? Ugh...

    So far my biggest concern with the is the lack of transparency about instance admins. Very few instances say anything at all about who runs them, where the instance is hosted, what kind of succession plan they have, exactly what kind of and how much moderation they do, info about who decides on defederation policies or user bans, or which nation state laws they are subject to. This is all basic stuff that each instance should provide to it's members.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @bohemianchic @jerry I don't see this information on that server's learn more page. Is it somewhere else?

    @ixi Thank you very much for that. No idea how I missed that. 😐

    atomicpoet, to random

    The Fediverse isn't a magic solution to all the issues we encounter on social media. It doesn't magically eliminate racism, homophobia, or online harassment. Sadly, there are still trolls and unpleasant individuals out there.

    However, the Fediverse does have one crucial advantage over Big Social: it's not owned or controlled by any one entity, and it can't be bought. Personally, that's a core principle I value when it comes to social media.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet Perhaps we should say that it is harder to buy the fediverse. There is nothing at all to stop admins who are running instances that are not set up as non profits or similar from selling their instance to someone with a lot of money. The great thing about the fediverse is that it is super easy to move to another instance should that happen to one's home instance.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet I too wish that it was possible to take posts with one when one moves. It seems like something admins should be interested in implementing as otherwise they are going to end up with a big overhead of hosting posts from ex users.

    Can you explain why you lost followers when you moved please? As I understand it followers remain with you when you move.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet My understanding was that if your sever doesn't federate with the server of someone you follow you will still see the posts of that person.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet Do you know where there is more information about this?
