bwinbwin, to anarchism

In Marshallese culture, there is a prominent attitude of "Enaaj Emman," which translates loosely to "It will be okay." It is strongly embedded in the culture and people's everyday thinking. If you are ever despondent, somebody is always there to remind you that "enaaj emman." It is a focus on hope and happiness that pervades daily life despite the struggles, setbacks, and disappointments that inevitably happen. People retain this optimism even after being irradiated by nuclear testing by the USGovt throughout the 1950s.

Having lived in the Marshall Islands for eight years, I am acutely aware of the threats and dangers posed by both nuclear waste and fossil fuels.

At this point, I expect to see this country of beautiful coral atolls and generous, gentle people be subsumed by rising sea levels. They are undergoing severe stress at 1.1C and will be completely uninhabitable at 1.5C. We will push past 1.5C by the end of this decade, and I don't think we have enough time, nor are we doing the right things, to reverse the momentum. These islands will be gone, and an entire country and culture will have been displaced or extinguished.

It fills me with profound sadness, especially when I think how it all could have been prevented but for the fraud perpetrated by fossil fuel energy companies and the greed of their executives. And let's not forget about the collusion of our politicians through bribery, nor forget about the perpetuation of the fraud through mass media owned by members of the same bourgeois class.

I understand the need to continue seeking solutions. I hope people create those solutions. Enaaj emman. I appreciate people like @pvonhellermannn who, despite feeling despondent, has provided to us long threads informing us about this crisis. Hope is still alive as Tina Stege, from the Marshall Islands, impresses upon us in these two posts:

https://mastodon.green/@pvonhellermannn/111482858888081587

https://mastodon.green/@pvonhellermannn/111381241869510068

Yet I am despondent. I am also very angry. My reaction is to want to dislodge and remove the parasitical elites of the 1%, punish them harshly, and completely dismantle their capitalist systems. I despair that billions will have to die before we make that happen. Certainly among the first great wave of casualties will the Marshall Islanders. And that fills me with rage.

It also brings back memories of living in the islands. It's as close to an anarchist way of life as I've ever seen in the world. And I'm now reminded of an elder woman who was asked by another Peace Corps Volunteer, "Who do you think is the best US president?" Her response: "I think President Kennedy was the smartest president. He sent all these young people here so they could learn "mantin majel" (Marshallese custom). There is so much wisdom in that statement, that it resonates even more strongly for me 35 years later. The world needs to learn Mantin Majel and enact its inherent values of peace, cooperation, solidarity, and optimism.

The American chestnut tree was a huge part of the east coast forest system. And then chestnut blight arrived killing the trees. trees are an attempt to reintroduce the trees. We planted several on the advice of the nursery. This photo is the healthiest tree. This young tree has many chestnuts. There must have been piles of chestnuts under a mature tree. , , , , , , , .

@compost I've found a way to boost the compost process here is sunny Central Queensland.

It's been unseasonably dry (and unseasonably hot / cold / wet all around) and the compost had stalled even with some attention to keeping it damp.

Well I tried using a dilute solution of molasses (it's cheap around here as it's a stock food supplement).... and was amazed that the process restarted, ramped-up and escalated to a point where the compost is breaking down faster than ever before.

Obviously the extra nutrients for the microbiota were the solution.

@colhill @compost. Way to boost the microbes in the compost! The Nigel Palmer book of Regenerative garden solutions has molasses as a nutritional boost. However, molasses is relatively costly here in southern Minnesota. , .

Okay: here’s the thing. My compost pile has taken some big hits in the last year or two. Nothing bad, mind you- but my use has outpaced my production.
I’ve been thinking about getting an electric shredder- to put the clippings/leaves/whatever through prior, with the hopes that increasing the surface area might help speed things along.
Is this worthwhile? Anyone have a machine recommendation?
(I’m simultaneously working on a better compost setup, worry not)

@compost My super fancy compost bin. Anyone can build one with spare materials or even just have a pile. The bin helps keep out small animals and my dog from the pile for me. Once every years a bear comes along and opens it like a cardboard box so I don't fuss about it being nice. What type of bin if any do other people use?

Pollinators,
@Pollinators@epicure.social avatar

@jbussieres @compost. It is important to have easy access for the pitchfork and I. Our compost material volumes work for this system. , .

Pollinators,
@Pollinators@epicure.social avatar

@jbussieres @compost. Thank you for sharing your bear aware outdoor compost system. Our outdoor system in southern Minnesota does not have to be bear aware. Our system has metal T posts and sheep wire fencing. It’s usually a two bay system. Our pallets lean on the fence to add shade. Our cover is cardboard weighted down by boards. We rotate the compost with a pitchfork working from the open, north side. , . Composting will save the world.

Today our 20ish-year-old cat passed away and we had to put an end to his suffering.

I would like to express that despite having to witness his suffering for Earth Day I tried to not make this about me as much as I could because, to be honest, The climate crisis is an issue that has severe consequences.

I could not give less of a shit about those who choose inaction and to be careless. I am sorry but if you can't have compassion for this issue there is something wrong with you.

I love the earth deeply and this gives me the courage to care and despite adversity to do what is good.

Needless to say, climate change deniers are going to be uncared for by this community.

I often, justifiably, bitch about modern tech being shite, so it’s only right I share my delight at digging a ten year old GoPro out of the cupboard, getting it some new batteries from eBay and finding it works perfectly well. Even the phone pairing app, which has been “upgraded” with all manner of nonsense, still works with it.
