Some ableist white men are simply incapable of accepting that they do not have to speak on things they don't know anything about.

I know they have been told so many times. They will not learn.

The infuriating thing is that many of them persist in this behaviour while regarding themselves as progressive.

You DO NOT HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE to every conversation that you happen across. It is usually best not to if you know fuck all about the matter at hand. You can only do harm.

Right click the start button and select Terminal.

Copy and paste in the command below and press enter:

If it is successful, sign out of your account then back in for the change to take effect.

idk who popularised the narrative "i don't let my disability stop me" but it needs to be stomped on, pulverised by a meat grinder and then thrown into the depths of the sea never to be seen again.

it is by far the most popular ableist narrative and i see it so much and immediately just think i'm a bad person for not being able to 'get over' my disability despite the fact it's an incurable, permanent and severely disabling disability.

stop stop stop stop pushing the mindset that people have to persevere despite their disabilities in order to be a worthy person

leave me alone and let me be disabled in peace

@fluffypaws this. I've especially struggled with other disabled people who push this angle. Because THEY are able to push through and still do a lit of things, they think other disabled people just have to 'stop thinking of themselves as victims' or some other such bullshit.

Just because you are lucky enough to be able to 'push through it' doesn't mean that's possible or even advisable for anyone else.

Pushing through it is how I got sick.

LRT: thinking of the aestheticians I've known who were staunch formalised and thought it was somehow dirtying art to consider its social implications as relevant to whether the art was good. Some of them very senior and world-renouned philosophers.

It always struck me as a very privileged, middle-class, white man position. Easy to say messages don't matter when the absence of them supports the status quo.

I wonder if 'AI' 'art' has shaken them - woken them up - at all.

Because it strikes me that they are the kind of people who would also find so-called AI art cheap and tacky. But I don't think you can say that if form is all that matters.

Some AI art is very beautiful. It is.

But it is much less valuable and interesting because it conveys nothing. It communicates nothing. There is no there, there.

The reason we don't have UBI is not because it doesn't work, but because they do not want to close the gap between the rich and the poor.

They know if we had more free time and money we would rebel. The goal is to keep us exhausted and work us into the grave. That's literally the plan.

I think my mom would have done better to just mix Rubyfruit Jungle in with all the other books, instead of putting it by itself on top of the bookcase. Curious teenaged me found it.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon Not to my knowledge. There were weird random films my dad wouldn't let me watch alone (Trainspotting and Repulsion) but not books. Random considering some of the films he was perfectly fine with me watching.

To my knowledge, my parents didn't police what I read at all, they only cared that I did read, and I'm glad of that.

@gardening update: since this morning there are TWO MORE elephant garlic sprouts and one of the ordinary garlic! (I think - it's possible I planted another elephant garlic on the other side of the wisteria, but I thought is was all garlic garlic.)

No photos because I have a headache starting, but there's not much to see anyway.

I mute sometimes after difficult interactions to help manage my mental health.

Please don't search out other forms of social media and messaging to try to get around that. I'm taking space because I need space.

I'm sorry I'm not always easy to deal with, but if someone lets you know you've overstepped a boundary, being less intrusive is a better way to make up for it than following them around the net to find new ways to reach them.

I need your help #bookstodon. One of the classes I'm taking at the graduate level this semester is Religion & Science Fiction. I read more fantasy, and would like to do my research paper on something that's not obvious (like ST/BS5/Matrix/etc.) & I'd love to use more modern sf rather than the golden age classics.

Anyone have any interesting ideas for my research paper on regarding the intersection of religion and science fiction?

@kitoconnell @KitMuse I mean, I think it does, a little (except for Shalmanezer 💕💕) and there is definitely a weird bit of 'are the people of Beninia magic Black people??' which I still look side-eye at. But there's more to it than I thought for a while.

Thanks for this discussion, btw. It's been a long while since I talked about things that used to excite me in a way that didn't just drag me down in some way. It's nice to just talk positively about interesting books.
