We've written up a short guide on how to navigate social media at a time rife with misinformation. Read our tips here: https://www.bellingcat.com/resources/how-tos/2023/10/26/separating-fact-from-fiction-on-social-media-in-times-of-conflict/?utm_source=mastodon

Some of this is obvious to me but nonetheless this is fantastic as a resource to send on. Thanks for the write up!

Going through my things at the moment, does anyone know what this is? I assume some sort of video card but internet searches come up blank. No computer to test it with either.

China's government has passed new legislation mandating that all new wireless-capable devices support the newer IPv6 standard.

The act also requires that telecom operators to support the protocol.

@campuscodi
Not going to lie this isn't a bad idea. We should've been doing this years ago, now I feel something about the ipv4 internet will seriously break before we transition. NAT is bad enough too.

fans answer me this, why was the Motorola 68K series not built upon? I know Motorola got involved in PowerPC but was there something about the 68k series that just didn't make sense or couldn't be expanded upon? It seems a rather abrupt end for a CPU architecture that seemingly vanished after the Mega Drive heyday went.

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

@ExtentOfTheJam True, I think Apple might've stayed with it but they've always not been afraid to tear up the carpet on their machines it seems. x86 PCs were never going to do that, it seems the huge library was (And still is even it seems) a huge draw.

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

@ExtentOfTheJam I believe the SNES originally intended to have NES backwards compatibility but never materialised but they kept the chip and it was quite weedy compared to the Mega Drive one it seems. Consoles may stay on x86 for as long as AMD can make relevant chips it appears, again it seems they want to lock in consumers on both Xbox and PlayStation with a huge built up library.

Genuinely fascinated by the number of people who didn't notice the Williams logo and are commenting on the "Motorola-branded" relays throughout the machine.

Like, yeah, those logos are really similar... but the text on the relays is also upside down.

Four relays within the machine with their paper wrappers featuring an upside-down Williams. The numbers on the relays are also upside down.

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

@TechConnectify Part of me wishes they were Motorola and so if later pinball machines used 68000 processors (Legendary in my eyes) it would feel appropriate.

@TechConnectify Is it weird I often wonder with old contraptions like these how much energy the bulbs use and if using LEDs would cut a significant amount of power draw from the unit?

Local Are Vanishing. How Should We Remember Them?

As smaller newspapers shrink or disappear, it’s easy to romanticize the role they played.

But one reporter’s memories of the heyday of local reveal a much more complicated reality.

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

@ProPublica
Remember what role they played in society and try to replace them without making the same mistakes they have made in their reporting. Old media in particular seems around here to have an establishment bias and can be really nasty to certain groups of people on the British side of things. We should move on from them and hopefully make something better in that process.

SHODAN, to Travel
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

Good morning fellow Mastodon users, today I'm attempting something highly risky and may not pay off, to go to London from the home counties using nothing but buses and a national express coach to patch things up. This morning has already involved a tight connection due to delays and now I'm on a bus that theoretically should get me to my destination according to the driver but it's a risk that currently may not pay off.

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

Also joining me today is a blue Sonic doll. This is a nod to my inspiration, Travelling Turtle on YouTube who does similar things and also a nod to my ever keen interest in all things video games. Here to accompany me through multiple more adventures I hope even the smaller ones.

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

I'm getting more and more confident this will in fact, pay off. London I go.

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

It paid off! A tight connection is gone and I should be heading directly to London soon. I'm now at Stansted waiting for my next connection.

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

The coach leg now, now since this is a bus challenge it is slightly duvious but unfortunately it would be a few more hours before I reached my destination. This therefore is the best option for time. I'm well ahead of where I should be on the plus side.

@256 Still an epic platform for basing a retro PC on. Building mine from used (And sometimes even sealed) parts was a joy of mine.

@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

@SinclairSpeccy You know its interesting to go back and see old computer adverts and see these quite now feeble machines be presented as powerful beasts but I think a 486 computer has an eternal bragging right in that it really did help usher in the age of capable multimedia systems with potentially cutting edge power for video games. This ad has aged well.

@trumpet Hi admin, would you know how or even if its possible to remove the explore and live feeds in the latest update you've upgraded too? Help an anxious user remove the possibility of doomscrolling and work on my mental health instead?

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

@trumpet Not on the advanced interface, so that is a dead end unfortunately.

You know how old game consoles worked with cartridges you plug in, was that cartridge system used for anything else?

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

@joelanman I don't own it, but it seems the Famicom Disk System uses it to feed its data to the Famicom (NES) system. I believe there is also Famicom basic which never made it to the west and seemingly had a keyboard to boot.

We did a lot of cleanup this week-end at and we'll give out most old PCs that we don't need, but I'll keep these Elonex machines for our collection as we have the matching 17 inch CRT, two mice and a keyboard. Some parts are moderately yellowed but overall good condition.

The second tower doesn't work, CPU seems fried and the heatsink bracket is broken anyway, I'll have to redesign and 3D-print maybe…

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

@mmu_man That looks like quite a cosy setup to play games on for a few hours. They look in great shape too

Trump is his own worst enemy. His lawyers must have told him not to do it, but he went on Megyn Kelly’s show on Sirius XM and made a number of admissions about pending criminal matters. Then when he hit a question he didn’t like, he said he wasn’t going to answer it. Hey Donald, a little advice: Megan Kelly is not a prosecutor or a cop. If you refuse to answer, your refusal can be used against you in court.

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

@georgetakei Very definition of fuck around and find out I guess.

Been sitting on hold for an eternity w/ the San Bernardino Superior Court. Their hold music is this one song over and over that's like a mashup of every southern rock song you've ever heard. Now you get to enjoy it too!

@briankrebs Might be a thing about British adverts but I swear this sounds exactly like a backing track used for an alcoholic refreshment, most likely beer. It would fit perfectly.

My last own SIMM PCBs and ICs are used up. I now have 8x4 MB SIMMs with parity. If I wanted I could upgrade my 486 to 32MB, but not sure what for. :) However a maxed out 16MB 286 sounds like fun...

SHODAN,
@SHODAN@mas.to avatar

@root42 I find these sticks somewhat fiddly to install compared to modern computers I find but the sound of them clicking into place is just fantastic I find.

@AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic Being the kid into video games as a "cooling off" mechanism after hours at school, during the peak 00s video game moral panic was rough for those reasons. I didn't realise it at the time just how important those things were to my well being too.
