Why learning about computers is like a Metroidvania videogame:

Early on, you encounter huge walls of text – source code, documentation, log files, whatever – which you don't understand most of. You pick out the one part you need right now.

Later, you gain new skills and knowledge that would have let you understand more of it.

So, just like in a Metroidvania, it's worth going back over earlier levels, using your new skills to get more benefit from the places you've already been!

My 9-year-old son just experienced what every game developer feels. Crying 😂

In Scratch, he was making a game, but accidentally deleted the sprite behind which the code, which he had been creating for a very long time. And he closed the project without returning this action. Lost the code and keeps crying. It is sad and joyful, this is experience baby 👽

Well, Mastodon is even more fucked than I thought when I built my own client.

Turns out an instance may eventually evict posts from accounts from other instances.

Say you are on instance A, and a friend is on instance B. You two have a convo. After some time, all of B's replies are gone from your instance. If you view your thread, you are missing all their replies. If you are lucky, instance B still has all replies. Or not. Poof.

What a terrible, terrible platform.

@badlogic I guess that's a consequence of the distributed design.
In my head a conversation should be able to be recreated anytime.
But also I want to see the posts from a user without having to go to their instance 🤷‍♀️ that part still drives me crazy

Looking forward to finally getting back to work today after breaking my hand and recovering from a mild bout of the latest strain of COVID (I’m assuming – at least two other folks who were with us tested positive even though neither Laura nor I did over multiple tests) while away in Spain at the start of the month.

There’s a big update to Kitten deployments in the works in its own branch that will also bring about a bunch of other improvements when it lands.

On Return to Monkey Island we had a lot of Zoom and Slack calls. Other than one team meeting none of them were video calls. Video calls are deceptively exhausting. Try eliminating them and you might be surprised how much better people feel.

Now that Shyre for has been out for a couple of weeks, I wanted to look back at the evolution of the game.

It was time to work on the main character of Shyre, a red ball with eyes was not going to cut it anymore, so I spent quite some time working on a nice walk animation and colorful (and hopefully cheerful) character: M001-Y

Putting the character back into the game, playing around with different tiles, and still considering enemies.

It was obvious that the tiles of the background made a lot of noise, so I decided to make the background black (and later I decided to add a black sprite to the character too)

Into the interesting stuff: Multiple rooms.

The enemies are still around, although they are outside the rooms, and the tiles are placeholders, but the idea of moving around getting items to unlock your path was there.

quite late into the development, I introduced the floor switches. This was the first room where I tested having 2 of them together.

The final room kept the idea, but added a few more tweaks.

with the floor switches in place, it was getting noisy again for the character, so I added the black sprite as the background, see before and after.

The last stretch was room design and refinement, as well as styling the tiles.
It looks nothing like the initial prototype, but to me it has been a smooth evolution.
