An open letter from Indigenous artists/collectives to the Art Gallery of Ontario on the departure of Wanda Nanibish and Taqralik Partridge. When an organization claims to be working with an Indigenous advisory, but no Indigenous artists in the region have been approached, that raises some red flags. https://iccaart.com/let-wanda-speak/

Alright, lots of heavy discussions today, so let's talk about something silly!

What is a movie that always makes you laugh?

Personal pick:

Anything Mel Brooks, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's just funny every time I watch it.

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@RickiTarr The Gods Must Be Crazy. I adore this film. I don’t think it’s possible for me to watch it without laughing.

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@RickiTarr Species took me about three hours to watch because I kept laughing myself into asthma attacks. The prehensile nipple attack scene just about killed me.

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@RickiTarr more:

Burn After Reading
La Cage aux Folles
Hail, Caesar!

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@RickiTarr Best In Show is also a laugh a minute. And I’ll always love Napoleon Dynamite.

America: You need to have health insurance!

Me: Cool, that makes sense, but it's going to cover my whole body, right?

America: Depends, do you use your teeth and eyes?

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@RickiTarr same in Canada, but mental health isn’t covered, either.

I think I will be doing a storytelling performance in Toronto next month for National Indigenous Peoples Month. If it’s the same as the past two years, it will be broadcasted online. I’ll share the details when I get them.

I am going down the rabbit hole with research for my new story. What I was originally planning to have as cosmic horror is becoming more and more eco-horror based on the history of New Brunswick. There’s so much going on here: expropriation for Base Gagetown and Mactaquac, huge amounts of DDT sprayed everywhere, rampant deforestation, and heavy testing of Agent Orange (and all the other rainbow herbicides). Who needs Cthulhu when there’s corporate/military/industrial poisoning on a grand scale? And that’s not even getting into the fracking.

Shanmonster, to random
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

My father was poisoned with Agent Orange. He was a soldier at Base Gagetown during this time period and has had skin conditions ever since. He didn’t receive any compensation (I don’t think he knew about it), and now too much time has passed for him to qualify. https://web.archive.org/web/20240303053815/https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-gagetown-base-agent-orange-herbicides/

This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:

Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.

@Knightky recorded my public reading of “Sirens Don’t Sing Underwater“ at BookFest on Sunday. Have y'all ever had someone act like you were hurting them somehow by just liking a food?

Any time I buy or make kimchi, my Mom says it's so gross and she doesn't want any and just on and on. I never offer it to her, or make group food with it, but for some reason she seems offended by it, and I don't know why.

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@RickiTarr a friend of mine likes to eat steak well-done, and wow, does that ever bring out the animosity.

Shanmonster,

@RickiTarr I know Inuit who’ve had death threats issued against them because they eat seals.

@lilithsaintcrow I flew in a plane last year and the air conditioning wasn’t working. I got really hot, and then the heat made me barf twice. Once into my bag and once into my partner’s.

Today has been incredibly odd, but I got good wordcount in, there's a chance for things to turn out well in the near future, someone else is making dinner, and the kids are excited for movie night.

I'll take it.

I'd like to think our genetics don't define us, and then I'll meet a herding dog, and start thinking, "Well, maybe..."

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@RickiTarr I grew up with a collie who had powerful herding instincts. It drove him to distraction that my sister and I liked to play away from one another at opposite ends of the yard.

He always loved it when I told him to go get the chickens. He’d round them up and bring them to me. He got pretty mad at me the first time I took him to the beach. There was a flock of seagulls out on a sandbar. I told him to go get the chickens and he ran down to round them up for me. He was unimpressed when they all flew away. He never fell for that trick again.

If you have pets, you likely call them things which have nothing to do with their actual names. Biscuit’s nicknames: Mr. Baby, Babby, Babs, Willa Willa, Little Love.

Putuuqti’s nicknames: Other Baby, PP, Babby, Willa Willa, Little Love

All animals are “Baby” and “Cutie” to me.

What are the alternate names for your critter friends?

Shanmonster,

@RickiTarr when I was a kid, my dream trip was to ride my horse across Canada with my dog accompanying me. The logistics/security of it all dissuaded me from doing it.

Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:
