The question is - why do Target and other retailers want to push a false crime narrative?

I don't know what benefit they get from tougher criminal laws - unless it helps them get close with the GOP. But it would be a good rationale for even more price increases.

It's tragic how CNN has declined from Ted Turner's vision. "The most trusted name in news" is just talking heads, pretending all this is normal.

Imagine what CNN's ratings would be if they did the Trump townhall in Turner's day.

  • His company found guilty of tax fraud
  • His longtime CFO admitted guilt to tax fraud
  • Multiple people guilty of seditious conspiracy say Trump incited them
  • He's a proven sexual abuser and proven defamer
  • He's charged with more tax fraud by the state
  • He's indicted for business fraud felonies

I'm old enough to remember when Joe Biden made a phone call to the hospital connecting Chris Licht with a top neurosurgeon who quickly assessed Licht's condition (near fatal brain aneurysm) making his treatment a top priority.

Licht later credited Biden for saving his life.

Yesterday, Licht set fire to democracy and Biden's agenda.

No one is banning encryption. Demanding platforms stop crimes, even if encrypted, is no different than cops stopping crimes behind closed doors.

All very valid points (except the offhand comment about everyone becomes a criminal)

But, I believe it's also unacceptable that billionaires continue to get rich providing platforms and algorithms that push disinfo, hate and radicalisation with literally no liability.

So, the answer must be some kind of compromise in the middle. That's why I reject this encryption sacred cow argument - that happens to benefit Zuck/Musk/etc.

But consider... How many encryption models have been cracked already?

I'd say all, if given enough time. Why? Because every encryption already has a key.

So, let's quit being so idealistic and build encryption that provides privacy balanced with limits to prevent abuse.

If you don't want to talk about tradeoffs, fine. But don't expect me to accept an all/nothing viewpoint.

I've long thought that the best tool to fight disinformation is a "truth in labeling" approach.

  1. legal definition of what is "news" (vs "opinion", entertainment, etc)
  2. civil and criminal cases for fraud against those claiming "news" that isn't
