Needed to rename some files based on a FITS header inside the files (FITS is a format for raw astronomical images), on Windows.

The easiest solution was…

… to install a whole other operating system into Windows (Ubuntu Linux) for access to basic UNIX utilities.

The future is weird.

TaoBear,
@TaoBear@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs UNIX-like operating systems are almost always the answer. That's why I skip a step and just run Linux natively. :)

Our customers told us loud and clear that they want larger displays.

That's why today we're announcing the world's largest smart watch screen on the new Apple Watch Plus.

Choose between the stunning new 13" screen and the truly head-turning 17" model.

Wrists will never be the same.

@thomasfuchs While trying to be sensitive to any and all challenges which might have resulted in "costumers" instead of "customers"... being someone with some theater experience, and not immediately getting the context of the whole toot... I initially thought you were talking about the people who design and assemble costumes for theater... and then I got the context, and costumers was funny to me. No offense intended.

@arstechnica I kinda feel like Starliner is Sheldon knocking on Penny's door, and she opened it before he could get out the third knock-knock-knock-Penny. Apart from the /possibility/ (what are the odds of needing a second "crewed flight test"?) of having a "second source," I really don't see any point in Starliner. Boeing blew it. Starliner is years behind (in operational experience and improvements based on it), far more expensive to fly, and seems like a much more limited spacecraft.

TaoBear,
@TaoBear@mastodon.social avatar

@hankg @arstechnica I agree that there should be a second source, but I think relying on Boeing for it is insane. Boeing has spent the last 20+ years cost-cutting its way into irrelevance. The only thing Boeing has going for it now is that it is essentially the only game in town for commercial aircraft and one of only three big players in space and defense. They've mortgaged themselves into dominance through acquisition in a field where engineering and fabrication are king.

TaoBear,
@TaoBear@mastodon.social avatar

@rst @hankg @arstechnica ULA is a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed-Martin. To say ULA still exists, but can't match SpaceX seems to be to saying "ULA is just about done" without actually saying it. Blue Origin... well... Let me know when that tin can makes orbit. Right now, nobody can match SpaceX's cost to orbit or launch cadence. That doesn't mean nobody else should try, but it seems to mean the legacy players are, to be kind, on the back foot.

So, Microsoft is silently installing Copilot onto Windows Server 2022 systems and this is a disaster.

How can you push a tool that siphons data to a third party onto a security-critical system?

What privileges does it have upon install? Who thought this is a good idea? And most importantly, who needs this?

TaoBear,
@TaoBear@mastodon.social avatar

@sos NOW is it time to dump Microsoft? I think /maybe/ so... but what do /I/ know?

TaoBear,

@nixCraft ...would they, though? I expect they would have planned ahead, done the research, gotten the telescope that was most compatible with the system they planned to run it with, and then tested the ever-loving sh!t out of it well in advance, knowing from a lifetime of experience that "It Just Works" is marketing tripe and rarely, if ever, applies in the real world.

@nixCraft I sort-of-agree. To use Linux the way typical Windows users user Windows... no, you don't really need special skills. If you want to see the blonde, brunette, and red head... yeah... you'll need to develop some skills... but the same goes for Windows or Mac. The benefit of Linux is that the access to skills is open and free.

Confused by Intel's new processor names? You're not alone.

https://itsfoss.com/intel-processor-naming/

TaoBear,
@TaoBear@mastodon.social avatar

@itsfoss I haven't bought a loose Intel processor (for myself) in at least 25 years. The machines I do have with Intel CPUs are all laptops and NUC-like mini-PCs where I really don't care about the specific model of the CPU. For building my own machines, I've been and AMD guy since the turn of the century, at least. ...and, of course, I have Raspberry Pis all over the place.

I guess what I'm getting at is Intel's CPU naming scheme really doesn't impact me.

Many folks used ESXi to learn about virtualization in the home lab and later used or promoted advanced products at work. This could be now useful for KVM and other products such as Proxmox.

TaoBear,
@TaoBear@mastodon.social avatar

@itsfoss Good for them, I guess. "sudo" or something like it is just one entry in a mountainous laundry list of features that I consider table stakes for being an OS I would choose to use. Of course, this does not address Microsoft's decades of shady business practices. I will not be choosing Microsoft Windows for my operating system needs. Not now. Not ever.
