The Hungarian Ornithology Society has these collectible pins they sell for donations at various locations around Hungary. There are more than 300 species included, but the catch is, they don't tell you which pins you can find at which locations.

Today I went on a scavenger hunt and managed to find a care at the fourth try 😄 Yay!

A friend explained to her 7yo.
The kid's reaction:

"So I don't have to kiss anyone and I can still be a parent?! That's awesome!"

I am finishing up my mythology manuscript this week, and it is really hard to let this one go... I had too much fun with the stories. I found a lot of forgotten Greek and Roman myths or myth variants that surprised and delighted me. It was like a huge puzzle to play with.

Just read an article about a theory that the myth of Asclepius and the story of Alcestis used to make one continuous epic. Which kinda make perfect sense.

The story starts with Asclepius killed by the gods for trying to bring back the dead with medicine.

And it ends with a drunk Heracles bringing back the dead by beating up the god of Death and breaking some of his ribs.

Resurrection. Best accomplished with booze and wrestling.

I managed to complete this yeat's A to Z Challenge, mostly because I scheduled the posts ahead of time.

I also decided to announce my theme for NEXT year... mostly because it will take a whole lot of reading to pull it off :)

Because teenage fangirls are seen as cringe. While teenage fanboys are Spiderman.

of the day:

Reading a legend about how emperor Franz Joseph's wife was a witch who used to turn him into a horse and ride him every night.

As a reminder that traditional storytellers often used everyday spoken language, here is what the wise advisor says when the Emperor confides in him about the matter:

"F*** hell, Joe..."

"Chic and Awe"

It's the name of the trope (according to TV Tropes) where someone expects a stranger to look unattractive, and then they show up and turn out to be hot.

And then they fall in love, obviously.

of the day, from a Hungarian Roma folktale:

A man sets out with a sword and encounters a sleeping 7-headed dragon. Not wanting to kill it while it is asleep, he lies down and snuggles it. The dragon wakes up later, sees the sleeping man, and decides to not kill it while asleep either.

(They do fight later on.)

The Divorce Colony: How Women Revolutionized Marriage and Found Freedom on the American Frontier - by April White

This book needs to be a high budget HBO show.

At the end of the 19th century, Sioux Falls was known for its lax divorce laws: if someone resided there for 90 days, they could file for divorce. The town's main hotel fast became a "divorce colony" of desperate women (and some men) and their own private dramas.

It is surprising how often, when I say "Hey, I'm reading this really interesting book..." people immediately respond with "Oh, you have TIME to read?! I don't even..."

Like... what is that?
What makes people jump right to that?

It bugs me for a bunch of reasons.

  1. Yes, I am busy too. I make time because it relaxes me.

  2. No, I don't care how much you read and I'm not judging you. You don't need to defend yourself.

  3. I wanted to share something I found fun, geez.
