A post I made on FB about my favorite animals led to a whole lot of people realizing that pink fairy armadillos are an actual thing, and it is delightful to watch 😆

I guess I'm now spreading the gospel of the pink fairy armadillo. They are real, y'all.

Another fun fact:

The Hungarian version of "the tables have turned" is "visszanyal a fagyi"

Which literally translates into

"The ice cream licks back"

My favorite character of Hungarian jokes is Aggressive Piglet. There are dozens of jokes, and they are... very quotable.

rides a bike, runs into a wall, and falls. Rabbit sees this.
"OMG, Piglet, are you okay?"
Piglet:
"Shut up! THIS IS HOW I PARK!"

"Piglet, what are you doing up that tree?"
"Eating cherries!"
"But piglet, this is a pine tree!"
"I BROUGHT SOME!"

Finally, my favorite
3.
"Piglet, wake up! It will be 8 o'clock soon!"
"NO IT WON'T BE!"

Having a toddler is like having That Dude join your party.

"The innkeeper hands you a cup of his finest wine."
"What color is the cup?"
"Blue."
"I RAGE."

"The Wizard is casting Sleep. You immediately fall asleep."
"No I don't."
"You have the lowest HP in the party."
"I'M IMMUNE, B***ES!"

"It's a Gelatinous Cube."
"I lick it."
"It's very dangerous!"
"I'm already licking it."

Hi, I'm a professional storyteller, and here's today's PSA:

"Folktale language" only sounds archaic because many stories were written down and thus canonized a century ago.

Folktales in a living oral tradition always used contemporary language.

Case in point: a Hungarian folktale I just read, collected recently, that opens with "So, there was this king, and he managed to knock up a handmaid."

So there's this Greek myth that says Zeus was fed by bees when he was born. In gratitude, he blessed them with the color of "shining bronze", and made them immune to cold and harsh winds. These bees lived in Zeus' sacred cave in Crete, and aggressively chased away anyone who tried to steal their honey.

Any or expert out there who could tell me what these bees are by any chance?...

So, just to recap:
Hungary has a new law that forbids any queer content to be presented in any form to people under 18. This involves all books with any reference to LGBT+ (including, ironically, Harry Potter). These books can only be sold wrapped in plastic, and in the adult section of bookstores. Stores have already been fined for millions of Forints for not complying. This week, they are also being taken off the shelves in some stores completely.
I feel helpless.

I once again made a compilation of folktales for the occasion.

This time, it's tales where women save themselves. Because they DO EXIST. 😉 (cough cough)

One of my favorite myths featuring a serpent is from the Bunun people in Taiwan.

It's a flood myth where the flood is made worse by a giant serpent blocking the rivers. People seek shelter on a mountain, and even their best warriors can't kill the serpent.

Then a giant crab appears and offers help. People make a giant clay pot as armor for him, and he puts it on still hot to rush into the fray.

The hero-crab vanquishes the serpent in an epic battle 🦀 🐍

I needed a journal article for research, and I couldn't find it anywhere. Not through libraries, not from the publisher. In the end I emailed the author, a little hesitantly. He sent me the article in 15 minutes.

Academic publishing being the mess it is, never discount the power of asking the author directly.

Because THEY EXIST. Lots of them.

Today's theme is Beaches.

People in Fiji had a ritual for calling turtles to shore, singing and dancing, during egg laying season. After the ritual they had to leave without glancing back and stay indoors for a night and day, giving turtles privacy.

According to a story one man decided to spy on the turtles. As he watched, a voice reproached him for breaking the sacred tradition. The man turned into a vonu (turtle) tree.

One of my favorite beer from Estonia:

Sparrow wants to make beer, roasts 1 grain of barley and drops it into a pond. He offers animals a drink from his beer pond.

The mouse and the dog pretend it's beer because they don't want to disappoint the sparrow.
The cat pretends it's beer hoping to eat the sparrow. The horse tells the sparrow the truth, but still drinks.

The sparrow decides to use two grains next year. 🍺

Portrait of Myself - by Margaret Bourke-White

Autobiography from a pioneering photographer who was present, camera in hand, for several important moments of the 20th century. Like honestly, this woman was everywhere, from Black Tuesday to WWII to Gandhi's death. She also writes passionately about industrial photography, which I never thought I'd care about.
Plus she kept alligators on her balcony in the Chrysler Building.

Hi, I'm a storyteller and here is today's

This one differs by culture, but: in many parts of Europe, one of the sites of traditional fairy tale telling was military service. Many tales you see in children's books now were told, in one version or another, by soldiers to each other after curfew.

So, technically, it is very much authentic to have characters in a fairy tale swear with abandon.

Just sayin'. Go ahead, try it. 😆

Exploding pears

I read a Hungarian Roma folktale today that featured an evil dragon woman trying to kill a man by cursing him with hunger, and planting an enticing pear tree in his way.

Luckily a girl knocked the pear out of the man's hand. The pear screamed so loud it made trees snap. Had he eaten it, she says, he would have exploded from the sound.

Hi, I'm a professional storyteller, and here's today's PSA:

Unless the storyteller complains, your kids didn't do anything wrong. We are fine with wriggling, giggling, lying down, and whispering. If you tell them off after the performance, you kill the magic right there.

Kids wiggle. They ask questions, and comment on the stories. It's part of storytelling. Don't discipline them unless I ask for help.

Today's match is kaolinite vs moissanite. Both are fascinating minerals.

From a folklore standpoint, moissanite doesn't yield much information, but kaolinite, being an essential part of porcelain, has a whole lot of Chinese legends attached to it.

In one, a kind-hearted potter learns how to glaze his porcelain wares from the daughter of an immortal whom he saves from a giant snake.

One of my favorite tidbits:

In many parts of Greece it was believed that vampires can't cross salt water. Because of this, they often buried suspected vampires on desert islands.

Greek vampires also had an affinity for shoemaking.

So... there are probably a bunch of fashion-forward vampire islands in the Mediterranean somewhere 😄 😄

So was anyone going to tell me that the "sacrificial virgin rescued from dragon by dashing hero" story existed as a gay love story in ancient times, or was I supposed to just find out from Antoninus Liberalis myself?...
