FINALLY! @TheWarOnCars episode based on the Winter Cycling Congress 2024 is out:
"Winter Cycling in Oil Country":
An unlikely cycling revolution is happening in , Alberta. Despite freezing temps, sprawl, an economy built on tar sands, this city is in the midst of a 4-year, C$100M investment in active transportation that will connect the city with a network of high-quality, protected bike lanes.

I asked my small biz customers to pay by check or e-check and many actually have! I have to invoice them separately so it’s tedious but the real ones are down. well, the real ones plus the lady from Texas who told me she was happy to start getting in the habit of paying for things by check due to the 15 minute city people eventually using credit cards to shut down commerce from longer distances 🤗

@kristinHenry @mivox it is astonishing, luckily I had learned about the 15 min City Conspiracy from @TheWarOnCars so I didn’t have to ask any follow up questions

NEW EPISODE!

"Winter Cycling in Oil Country"

An unlikely cycling revolution is happening in Edmonton, Alberta. Despite freezing temps, lots of sprawl and an economy built on pulling oil out of the Albertan tar sands, the Canadian city is in the midst of a four-year, $100 million CAD investment in active transportation that will connect the city with a network of high-quality, protected bike lanes.

Hear from the folks making it happen!

@TheWarOnCars I loved the end of the radio interview where the one host tried to sneak in his anti bike rhetoric talking about the cost of bike lanes, followed by Doug's fast reflexes redirecting it to the cost of highways.

This week the @TheWarOnCars mentioned that 30% of the US does not have a drivers license.

I did the numbers for British Columbia, Canada and got over 25% do not have drivers licenses.

We're looking into mobility options for our parents who can't drive any more. Just found out about Van Raam adaptive cycles, they have dealerships in the US and Europe. If you can't or don't want to drive a car one of their awesome cycles may help you! They have side-by-side sociable tandems, low step through delta trikes, wheelchair transport bikes and electric assist options. They even have tandem couplers so you can train the sociable tandem and trikes together.

If you are interested in adaptive cycling and the 30% of people in the US who can't or don't drive you might also want to take a listen to the new @TheWarOnCars on Cars podcast, an interview with the author of 'When Driving is Not an Option,' Anna Zivarts

NEW EPISODE!

"When Driving is Not an Option with Anna Zivarts."

One-third of people in the US can’t drive. Those tens of millions of people are often invisible to planners and elected officials, and that’s why Anna Letitia Zivarts, a low-vision nondriver and activist has written a new book, "When Driving Is Not an Option: Steering Away from Car Dependency." We talked with Anna about building a system that works for everyone.

We know that smashing freeways through the middle of U.S. cities was an unmitigated disaster of 20th century urban planning. So, why is the State of Texas still tearing down homes, schools, and businesses and spending tens of billions of dollars to widen Interstates through the middle of Houston, Dallas and Austin? In her excellent new book, "City Limits," journalist Megan Kimble seeks to answer this question. On the new episode @TheWarOnCars...

NEW EPISODE: "Car Insurance is Too Cheap."

It's never been more expensive to insure a car, but coverage barely covers the full personal and societal harm of car crashes, something we all pay for whether we drive or not — and that traffic violence victims subsidize with their life and limb.

@TheWarOnCars listening right now and TYSM for covering. I've been following you since the beginning, but also Michelle Dubarry. Subrogation also came for me in 2018. Less than 3 weeks after donating my car to WAMU, hit by a driver. AU insurance wanted some of my settlement back--- it ended up being the VALUE of the car I'd just donated to my own workplace.

MonKaiju,

@TheWarOnCars Every once in a while y'all have an episode that reminds me that you're at least comfortably middle class. Many of the solutions you push, including this one, would disproportionately harm low income folks who need a car for work. Sure lets raise insurance on fancy cars and second cars or whatever, anything considered a luxury car, but to just say 'car insurance rates should go up' is so tone deaf to the millions of folks in the US who need cars through no fault of their own and cant afford to live as is.

PeterRobison, to random
@PeterRobison@nashtodon.com avatar

Just a reminder that the average price of a vehicle ($48k) is close to DOUBLE the amount of minimum insurance that TN requires ($25k bodily injury, $15k for property).

As this article argues, victims of car crashes are bearing the costs of the harms caused by driving. Put another way, car crash victims are basically subsidizing car insurance and car usage in America.

And if you want to know more about how insurance minimums, no-fault laws, and subrogation liens work—all told in a surprisingly accessible way—this episode of @TheWarOnCars does a really good job. I highly recommend it.

Except for the fact that they require a license from the state to operate, a loan from a major financial institution to purchase, insurance to shield users from the cost of their harms, and can be used to collect and share driver data without their full consent, cars represent freedom, baby!

Extraordinarily good @TheWarOnCars piece from January (ostensibly) about the new battery swap system in NYC. But it's actually about people and economic justice. As all transport/urban policy reporting should be.

I'm fully on board with this narrative: the electrification revolution started a decade ago, led by low income folks because electrifying small vehicles lowers the cost of participating in society. We need to embrace that and help make it even cheaper and safer.

I've started listening to @TheWarOnCars, and I'm impressed by how many angles they approach the subject from. They've gone into depth on the lives of immigrant workers, the process of getting a billboard taken down, the mindset you want to have on a city council, and even a little biology and ecology. It's like the variety channel of urbanism.

I think some of this is due to the podcast interview format. They find someone new to interview for each episode, so they're always getting a new perspective.
