Took my recycling for a ride in the countryside! (Excess cardboard and a lot of broken plastic bins). #BikeTooter

@ai6yr A while back; I biked a load of branches to the local compost pile in a trailer.

I thought this was unusual until someone else showed up with a trailer loaded with a very large empty compost bin and a shovel.

@ai6yr Dude, you're supposed to actually recycle it, not... rebicycle it.

Hmm, when did California lose it and start using plastic bags again at grocery stores? The pandemic? For awhile there I thought everyone was using (at the very least) beefier recycled plastic bags instead of throwaway plastic, but apparently someone lobbied someone so people are just buying more disposable plastic bags (at 10 cents a shot) in my neighborhood. 😢

(Nope... I do not go to the grocery store much, LOL).

W6KME,
@W6KME@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr Bizarrely, the LDPE bags are possibly the only plastic product that is 100% recyclable back into more LDPE bags. Which was meaningless, since essentially nobody recycled them, even those people that diligently put all those not-actually-recyclable plastic water bottles in the recycle bin.

That brief window where we had no plastic bags finally got me 100% off the habit. I don't use bags at all in the store; I take everything in the cart to my car and bag it there.

ai6yr,

AHA! Article from the LA Times... from August of 2023. Apparently there was a law (Senate Bill 270) passed which outlawed LDPE bags... but they moved on to HDPE (thicker) bags to bypass the law!!! So there was a period where no, there were not a lot of plastic bags as they figured a way around the law. https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2023-08-24/whats-the-deal-with-single-use-plastic-bag-bans

@_ohcoco_@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Welp. That answers my question about why some stores seemed to have moved on to industrial-strength plastic bags!

AP: Heat is killing howler monkeys in Mexico... "Meanwhile, an animal park in northern Mexico confirmed it has received reports that at least a hundred parrots, bats and other animals have died, apparently of dehydration...he number is likely only a small percentage of the animals affected...There are going to be a lot of casualties to the ecosystem if we continue this trend of heat waves in the region..."
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/heat-is-killing-howler-monkeys-in-mexico

ai6yr,

"Wildlife biologist Gilberto Pozo attributed the deaths to a heat stroke, noting a “synergy” of factors — including high heat, drought, forest fires and logging that deprives the monkeys of water, shade and the fruit they eat — appeared to be to blame, while saying a pathogen, disease or other factor can’t yet be ruled out."

(***Personal note: NOT ONE MENTION OF CLIMATE CHANGE IN THIS ARTICLE! PATHOGEN?!? CMON AP)

Lost & Found (and a )
[Shared via I Am Dog Rescue Crossroads]

If you've lost a pet in the Valley View storm, All American Dogs Shelter has been out to the area and has picked up several pets.
They will be diligently searching for and picking up loose/stray animals and taking them back to the shelter in Pilot Point.
Please contact the shelter or (better) go out there and see if your furry family member has been captured and is waiting for you.
If you haven't had a chance to do so yet, and your pet is microchipped, please contact your microchip company to be sure the contact info is up to date.

ai6yr,

@MiBaWi Interesting... first time I've seen "bread" and "brown paper bags" on a donation request list. I am curious on those....

ai6yr,

@MiBaWi Aha! Checked out the Facebook page, and apparently they need bags that people can fill with supplies, which do not shred... Apparently that part of Texas is plagued with "VERY CHEAP PLASTIC BAG" syndrome, i.e. the lightest, cheapest bags which shred on contact... The alternative, of course, would be beefier shopping bags (recycled polypropylene bags, etc. like you see in California).

Approaching the annual "running out of beekeeping equipment" date. 😬

(Bees follow the rule of exponential growth and decay: you either have WAY TOO MANY BEES or NOT NEARLY ENOUGH BEES -- in spring they grow by the power of two or more, but they also tend to drop in half in winter).

ai6yr,

I believe this is a good book on exponential growth -- Anno's Magic Seeds.

@melanie "Vermiculite was discovered in the mountains near Libby in 1919, and vermiculite mining quickly became the dominant industry in town. The mineral, which has many commercial uses, from acoustic tiling to insulation, is perhaps most widely known today as the small white bits mixed into potting soil. ... When WR Grace & Company acquired the mines in 1963, they were producing 80% of the world's vermiculite. However, the strain of vermiculite being mined was heavily contaminated with a number of asbestiform minerals that have come to be known as Libby amphibole mix." https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(17)30048-6/fulltext

this version of sriracha is far superior to the current recognizeable bottle.

the main org fired the old growers, so they started making their own variant. the main orgs new growers are pitiful, by comparison. try this stuff if you can.

also homemade kalua pork is heavenly

Got some more notices from Watch Duty today about a wildfire in my county but nowhere near me — a fire that was quickly extinguished. I smiled when I saw the familiar-to-me reporter name: Michael Silvester, who is in New Zealand. (He was CA Fire Scanner on Twitter.)

If you're in the Western US and at all concerned about wildfires, I highly recommend the Watch Duty app.
