Woke bluestocking midlife PhD student. Neurodivergent. Quite sweary. Almost certainly not a witch.

Brexit is still bobbins, obviously.

Veterinary type in (partial) recovery. Gardener, smallholder, and keeper of woodland. Frequently a greedy sod and (consequently) a decent cook.

Creative. Writer. Crafter. Reader. Geek. Eternally curious awkward type.

Come for the photos of Cornwall, food, dogs and livestock. Stay for the rest of the madness.

Biology faculty at UT are meeting today to talk about a hiring plan. I really don't envy their job of trying to make a department located in Texas attractive.

We're in the middle of an ongoing purge of black staff, the adminstration just called in the state police to beat and jail students, and no one in their right mind would want to risk pregnancy to have a family here. It's bleak.

@alexwild Some under-qualified white dude is going to get the career of his dreams as a result. Exactly as the lawmakers intended.

Today’s new thing: About bastards fucking up countries for their own benefit and without regard for the actual people trying to live there, basically.

I appreciate this is maybe a bit niche, and a little on the long side, but it also has Douglas Adams in it and I gifted the world a new acronym, and everything, so…
Wanna give it a read? 🤷‍♀️

What we need is to rename HMRC as :-

OfDoom

As in the government department "of doom"...

Who's with me on that?

“In a drastic attempt to protect their beachfront homes, residents in Salisbury, Massachusetts, invested $500,000 in a sand dune to defend against encroaching tides. After being completed last week, the barrier made from 14,000 tons of sand lasted just 72 hours before it was completely washed away”

New post klaxon! 🎉
Some thoughts about how we live now, why, and what that means for the future - featuring, amongst other things, a startled North American discovering real people live in thatched cottages, and a good long rant about models of urban development. Enjoy!

Anyone who's spent any time at conferences has met him. He's the guy in the Q&A who says "It's not really a question, more of a comment..."
I wrote a bit about why he's a problem and what we can do as academic and professional communities to fight back.

I'm really enjoying Singaporean chef substack. Even tho of course I wish they weren't on it.

But there is a critical mass of Singaporean food substacks at the moment, with content I can't get elsewhere; hardly even from books.

There's a guest post on 'lou ark' (braised duck), a Teochew specialty often eaten for

https://sgpnoodles.substack.com/p/lou-arh

Lucky for me, I live close to a Vietnamese Teochew restaurant in San Francisco that has it every single day.

@skinnylatte I own a lot of cookbooks, well over a hundred and fully intend to buy more in future. I know enough to recognise a bad recipe online and honestly that describes at least 80% of the total.

Some time ago now I rather rashly threatened to start blogging again. Not being the sort to back down from such things, and somewhat belatedly (because life) the first post is now live. It's about Candlemas and hope and light and change. I hope you enjoy it! https://loreandordure.com/2024/01/30/candlemas-2024-on-beginnings/

I met this little nuthatch dude today, while he was shaking off a concussion he got from being surprised one of my windows was reflecting a blue sky for the first time in what feels like months!

A small grey bird with a prominent black eye-stripe, a long black beak and a pale faun and gold throat and chest, perching on a human hand.

Already hearing rumours of people dismantling Christmas decorations. I'd go with much of Continental Europe (and English Heritage!) and leave them until Candlemas if I could get away with it!
