Let’s talk tags on clothing. I hate them and they annoy me to no end. And even if I cut them off, the tiny bit remaining always manages to touch me and I hate it. 😩

Do tags bother you?

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@autism101 @actuallyautistic Yup. I will do anything it takes to take out an itchy tag. I am always happy when a shirt has printing there instead of a tag sewn in. I did this for decades before realizing I was ND. So many shirts had holes where tags once were!

Did you see: A tent in the woods? Someone shoplifting? a person sleeping in their car?

No! You fucking didn't! People are struggling. Don't make it worse.

@ai6yr Yep! It's not something that can be washed away or cooked away. Another commenter mentioned garlic in oil. Any homemade vegetables/fruits in oil need to be refrigerated and used or frozen within 4 days. EVEN PESTO! Every single vegetable or herb, not just root vegetables, can harbor this toxin. It likes anaerobic environments, which oil is. Commercially prepared oil and herb/vegetable mixtures are acidified to prevent the growth. Home cooks can't do that.

I can sometimes be slow to notice the elephant in the room & the eggshells on the floor (the problem that everyone carefully denies and manages so as not to upset anyone), but once I do notice, I want to confront and solve it.

The problem in this instance is my MIL’s insistence that she & FIL continue to live in a house too large to manage on an acre of rambling garden in an isolated location at the top of a narrow windy road.

Of course solving such a thing is not always possible, & if I’m not the main person affected, the person doing their best to support & manage the situation, it’s not my problem. Attempting to solve it might just make the situation worse for that person & leave others feeling judged & hurt.

It’s a boundary issue, & one I struggle with.

@Susan60 @actuallyautistic We moved my mom out of a small town and a terrible house she had been in for almost 25 years in Oct, 2019, right before the pandemic started. It's going on 5 years and she's only now feeling more at home in her new place (a very small retirement neighborhood in my town). It would have been impossible for her to age in place in that small town w/o one of us two kids moving there. It's hard to know what is the right thing to do to find balance.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@Susan60 @actuallyautistic It absolutely would.

I have a good friend who spent about five years traveling to her parents place 90 miles from here four or five days a week to try to keep them aging in place. They loved where they lived! Loss of it would mean loss of identity, as you mentioned.

Then, both of them had health problems and took a turn for the worse. I don't know if staying there was better or if moving them would've been better. It's a tough call.

Posted my job to the I Love Plushies page on Facebook and boosted it as an employment post.

Part of the job is taking plushies on adventures for cute photos, so good to reach people who would like doing that. It's time consuming, as much as I love doing it.

$15/hr isn't much at first, but as the business makes more money they'll get a raise.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@ashleyspencer Haha! I used to do this -- carry a plushie on a trip, for example, as a stand-in for a friend who was serving overseas. Take photos of them eating, hiking, reading, hanging out, mail the photos and the plushie to the friend (this was pre-cellphone). Good times!

I finally tried this tonight but wrongly assumed I had spaghetti in my cupboard. So it became Assassin's Bowties. Definitely tasty and spicy as promised.

I was speaking with a friend earlier and discussing a personal issue. I have a medical 'thing', I've discussed it here a little, in which I have to keep a restrictive diet or I have stomach problems. It's a permanent thing that I live with, and while it isn't the best...it's a very minor inconvenience most days.

This morning was not. So I jokingly was speaking with my friend who is a networking engineer (this is important).

So after explaining how I made mistakes last night and that this was my new normal, she jokingly offered "Have you tried rebooting your stomach?"
She was shocked to learn that yes, we have tried that.
Her response was gold and I wanted to share.

Without pause she said,
"I mean that is like 90% of my solution skillset."

And I have been chuckling for minutes.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@mentallyalex That is a chuckle-worthy response in the very best sense of the idea! Hah! It's true, too.

Too bad we can't "turn it off and on again". ☹️

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@mentallyalex Oh golly. Glad you figured it out but darn. (I remember now you're in the no Valentina hot sauce camp.)

As I've aged I've come to appreciate "boring" food more. Unsalted cooked beans and rice with herbs are a staple. I find once I've limited/cut out salt and sugar for a while, real plain food can actually taste amazing.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

So I've been re-watching Discovery bc the new season starts April 4th.

I have the cheap version of Paramount+, so I see ads all the time.

So many drug ads, with so many doctors' offices, and no masks. So many ads with people just doing normal stuff, clearly not worrying about Covid. All the Covid ads are for Paxlovid. One or two are for the updated vaccine.

Basically all of them say you're gonna get sick, citizen from whom we want money, so deal with it.

This is so dystopian.

Isn’t it funny how many Star Trek episodes there are about escaping time loops

and how I will continue rewatching them for the rest of my life

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@Traiken my best friend and I talk about this a lot. We can't live without Star Trek at this point. We both just recently finished the entire DS9 series (sadly, not together). She's gone on to watch Voyager and I'm finishing up a rewatch of Discovery.

Something I wanted to do in 2020 was have a regular TOS watch party and read excerpts out of these are the voyages. I never got it organized and then everybody went overboard going "back to normal", so it never happened.

How do you all feel about that show Life or Beth? I'm late dxed and i thought michael cera's portrayal was the best, most relatable I've seen. And i gained a whole bunch of insight and empathy for my NT partner, like a glimpse into what my awakening might have been like from her perspective

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@Alice You can seriously consider yourself an influencer now -- and the company should give you a cut. At least four on this thread have bought one already. I see no downsides to it. I have two queen size beds in my house, so either I or my guests can use it, and it's washable AND freaking portable, so I envision myself putting this around my airbed in my big tent if I ever get to go camping again so morning sunlight doesn't bother me. WINNING! 🏕️

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@michaelgemar @Alice I set it up last night and hung a portable CO2 monitor on one of the hooks inside. Zero problems. Though I did have the zipper closest to that monitor open. But unless my monitor is malfunctioning, the levels were great, and the fabric seems incredibly breathable. I'm pretty happy with this! I should've aired the fabric out before sleeping in it though bc it did trigger my asthma, but that's a different problem. 🙄

"It is very clear that the word 'outbreak' has very negative connotations to the public and would have media attention, possible patient shunting to [other local hospital] beds, and closing of all admissions to the affected units," reads the response from Island Health.

"There is now a more informed approach that does not alarm the public and staff that should have the same outcomes as when outbreaks were previously called." ...

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@hhf @jmcrookston If you don't test, you don't have any liability for where the next patient caught Covid, either. It is a direct violation of their oath to do no harm, IMO.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@jmcrookston @hhf Get out! That is... that is effing reprehensible.

I know they're under a lot of stress, have no resources, have to face this every day, etc. It seems like all hospitals worry about anymore is their financial bottom line, though. No wonder healthcare workers are completely burnt out and have given up.

Our nonprofit hospital went bananas in 2021 and mandated that everyone had to wear baggy blues. Nothing else. So dangerous!
