The beans were done (overnight in this crock pot) so, blearily I finished the rest of the chopping and cooking early this ayem for the vegan sweet potato chili.

Now, it cooks and absorbs the flavors of the spices/onion/garlic "roux" (no actual flour).

Fingers crossed that it tastes good and it's not too spicy for my BFF.

When it comes to veg/vegan chili, recipes are just suggestions. I could tell you what's in it, but I can't tell you how much -- or why!

A few years ago I figured out I could easily cook any kind of dried bean overnight in the crockpot. All I do is rinse them thoroughly, then throw them in the crockpot on low heat with enough water so they'll be covered when the beans expand. It is a game changer regarding beans. I eat beans every day now because it's so easy to cook them in a crockpot. I use a small one for my daily portions and a large one when I'm making things like soup or chili to share.

One last note about beans: I can control the amount of sodium cooking them this way (I add none). They always turn out more tender than cooking them on the stove, and are way tastier than canned beans because I season them as I use them. No soaking or pre-cooking required! I don't understand why it works, but it does.

Here's a rookie mistake I made with my dog after not having one for over 20 years:

When I was first training Miles, I made my voices different for correction and praise. My correction voice is close to my normal voice, but sterner. My praise voice is a ridiculous baby voice with lots of lilting and happy sounds -- which is fake and exhausting.

I figured that by age 2 I would be able to forgo the baby voice.

I COULD NOT BE MORE WRONG. I'm stuck with the baby voice now. 🤦🏽

Even though I've been a bit of a nerd for a few years now, I wish I knew more about the forces behind it.

This morning, looking at the radar for the whole planet, it's raining or snowing in many, many places.

But I've rarely seen rain move like this on the land mass I live on, moving up from the southeast to the northwest.

It's disconcerting. We're getting water moving up from Florida right now. Eww!

@PossiblyAutistic @actuallyautistic It's a weird game played by most NT's with unspoken rules that I never understood. Apparently I friendzoned all male people in my younger life and didn't know it.

I have always assumed I could be actual friends with anybody, regardless of how they perceive me. I couldn't be more wrong! At least when it comes to NTs.

And yeah, people play it all the way up until they die in their 80s and 90s. They never leave junior high. SMH

@StillIRise1963 @todwest Meeee toooo. Early in the pandemic, I really missed hugging my mother. We didn't know how Covid was transmitted yet, so we were all staying masked and 6 feet apart and not touching.

I bought some cheap rain ponchos and we would put them on backwards and then cover our masked faces with the hood to give each other crinkly plastic hugs.

It's actually still a fairly sound way to approach hugs, knowing what we know now about the virus. 🤣😖

There’s a weird phenomenon in nature: the ant death spiral or, less morbidly, the ant mill.

Basically, if a group of army ants loses track of the pheromone trail they’re following, they just start following other ants. If those ants happen to double back and pick up the pheromone trail left by the lost ants, then they start following each other in a big circle.

They will then follow each other in an endless circle, trying to find their way home, until they die of exhaustion.

This is an example of an emergent phenomenon. By following an incredibly simple set of rules, a complex behavior emerges from interactions that the individual ants would never behave this way on their own.

And it’s an incredibly maladaptive emergent behavior. These ants don’t “want” to fruitlessly March themselves do death in an endless circle, but, by following that simple set of rules for survival, they end up destroying themselves.

@Brad I woke up this morning thinking to myself "this is like an airborne AIDS."

I know that could be misread as a gross oversimplification or a brush off; I do NOT wish to diminish how horrendous the HIV epidemic is and has been.

Both these viri can exist and be devastating at the same time.

Like HIV, COVID-19 is dysregulating T cells, the effects of which may be long-term.

I haven't looked into what it does to B memory cells yet.

It's really scary, but nobody is scared.
