Alert to followers: I have requested an account on another server that blocks Threads. I should know if I get approved within a couple of days.

I have other Mastodon accounts but this has been my most active one, so I will be migrating it if I get approved.

It'll be work following everyone back, but I'm willing to suffer that pain to prevent Zuck from ever scraping even a tiny amount of my data!

I love N95s. It's amazing we can wear these things and come face to face with someone who is infected with the most contagious virus known and just not get sick.

I wish more people could appreciate how incredibly lucky we are to have access to technology like this.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@PacificNic I am grateful for mask tech for sure! I try not to think about possibly inhaling microparticles of plastic from them. Idk if that is a thing, but that's what my mind does (catastrophizes). I'd rather worry about that than catch the virus, though.

Imagine youre able to pay a bond/fine of $454 million dollars, still have plenty left and keep whining about it

For many people on this planet even $454 could make the difference in their lives

And that's without six zero's behind it..

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@stux I've been thinking a lot this week about how most people in my country don't even have the cash for a $400 emergency. And that really, the $400 emergencies these days are the cheap kind of emergency... 😬 (Having been beset with more than a few repairs/emergencies of the more expensive kind this month, that's why that has been on my mind.)

@FrightenedRat @nddev @actuallyautistic I am aphantasic, so can't hold a picture of something in my mind when I'm looking for it. I relate to the Amorphous Blob! Everything's undifferentiated until I start looking for a specific thing. I have to look for it by feeling/remembering the last time I used it or put it down. Most of the time I can't find it if it is not in its generally-assigned blob-area, because I put it someplace really weird when I was distracted.

When "pandemic fatigue" (see also: the bystander effect) results in outcomes that can accurately be described as eugenics -- no matter how passive the form -- then succumbing to pandemic fatigue is succumbing to eugenics

Someone who doesn't intend to be a eugenicist can nevertheless express eugenic behavior by failing to resolve the cognitive dissonance of knowing better and failing to act accordingly

Here’s a thing to consider: under the ACA (“Obamacare”) insurance cannot exclude pre-existing conditions. A GOP-led Congress and Presidency will destroy that. This is a problem for you and me because:

  1. Nobody has been hiding chronic health problems for 12 years, so we all have pre-existing conditions.
  2. Data mining means insurance companies know how much you drink, what you eat, and what your smartwatch thinks of your heart rhythm.
  3. DNA test services know your genetic risks now.

I almost died out there yesterday because somebody needed chicken fingers RIGHT THE HELL NOW.

This big pickup crossed two travel lanes from the left then stopped sideways in front of me when they couldn't get into the right turn lane bc other cars were in it.

Glad my habits of careful driving and paying attention on the road paid off.

I drive with the assumption that everyone else is likely to do spectacularly stupid things, and, well, someone did.

It could have been really bad. ☹️

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@isotope239 💯! It brings me back to the fact that nobody knows how to think ahead anymore. Nobody makes contingency plans or pays attention to alternate routes in case they miss their turn, nothing. Nobody thinks about how to map out their trip in their head in case there's an obstruction, construction, accident, or anything else that stops them from going the way they think they have to go. People who are unable to do those things shouldn't be out there driving cars.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@cavyherd @thepoliticalcat @isotope239 Very interesting. It's a conversation I've been having very civilly with various people here on Mastodon. It's difficult to bring up in my friend groups or family, though, because so many of them have had it multiple times now. I don't understand how they can be around me and not take better precautions. I mean, I'm not quiet about what I do! It's clear that I'm taking precautions 100% of the time. 🤷🏽

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat @cavyherd @isotope239 I think I did the same thing! Meaning I pulled up an article about road accidents and COVID, and then completely forgot where I put it. Usually I print interesting articles out and stick them in a binder, but my printer is out of order right now.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@cavyherd @thepoliticalcat @isotope239 I definitely feel like my executive functioning has fallen off in my 50s. I don't know if it is the stress of the world, late-realized autism, all the incredible trauma of the past few years (including a divorce and a number of close deaths). My memory of events has always been bad anyway, but my ability to remember where I put my phone down? I'm glad I can ask my smart speaker to find it for me.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@isotope239 @fmhilton @cavyherd @thepoliticalcat Yes and more yes! Oh I love the idea of having a timeline available at your fingertips, especially when using different modes of travel.

I'm a road tripper myself. And I love going by myself. Though, I got spoiled when I was married, because my ex was an excellent driver whom I could really trust and we had similar rest stop and food needs.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@isotope239 @fmhilton @cavyherd @thepoliticalcat I have a tendency to be drawn to addicts and abusers, and the second person I married (impulsively) was a control freak. As I realized I needed to get out of that relationship (20+ years ago), I opened my own bank account bc I was the only one working. I got yelled at and put down so many times, but if I put anything in the joint account? It would be gone the next day.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat @isotope239 @fmhilton @cavyherd

I should've paid attention to what I wrote on his seventh grade picture: YUCK.

We had known each other for decades, played in bands together, he was charming as hell, etc. I was still stuck in the "must uphold cishetero standards" plus did not know that I was autistic (he prob was too). So, lots of stuff going on.

Fast forward to now: he's dead, and I got his drum set.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat @isotope239 @fmhilton @cavyherd Something about his death was very cathartic, and not to sound too woo woo, but it was really healing to work with his brother to get some of the crap cleared out of his house. 🤷🏽

Before that? Tons of regrets. But I said to his ghost, if I get your drum set, I won't talk bad about you anymore. 20 years is enough.

arisummerland,
@arisummerland@mstdn.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat @isotope239 @fmhilton @cavyherd My worst regret is I am still paying off my student loans that he ran up. I will state that as a fact, rather than an accusation, though. I was dismayed when the government wouldn't pay off my loans last year. I now owe about twice what I took out. 😬

    @dnc Yes! Baby them. Don't overwater them, but keep the soil damp. Give them some good light and don't let them get too cold outside yet.

    They've only got their cotyledon, not their true leaves yet. Give them at least another week to grow their true leaves out of the center and maybe at that point give them some bamboo skewers and a very light string tie up along the stem to keep them growing upwards.

    Another day of struggling with being the sole COVID avoider in my local circle and the thoughts “screw it, if you can’t beat them, join them” creep in mighty powerfully. @GeorgiaOnMyMind I feel this. I haven't been unmasked around anybody else for years now. 13 March will be the start of year 5. I remember vividly going out to my car that day in 2020, feeling really sick to my stomach because of stress and worry about the virus. I sat in my car and called both my clients that I was supposed to see that day and we all agreed that we should cancel and hold off until we knew more. I was off work for 14 months after that.

    This morning after another fantastic event, I remain gobsmacked by the original film.

    I do not know what headspace I was in when I watched it before, but this time, it hit home HARD.

    It is a masterpiece.

    After seeing Oppenheimer a few times last year plus reading the book, I've got much more historical context for why this film was made and what it meant -- and also the cultural/film norms that it broke.

    Astounding in that context. Excellent food for thought.
