Having spent a few hours catching up on allegations and how concerns and grievances have been handled by admins so far I wonder if it's time for my first to an instance more aligned with my values (and one that lets me emit the occasional toot in 🇩🇪).

Problem is, I don't know where to go 😓

My dream instance has always been chaos.social - any for an along similar lines?

axwax,

Things that are most important to me to find in my local timeline are , ,
, , and and a ton of other things, so an instance predominantly talking about has never been the perfect fit for me, and I've noticed I spend less and less time on my local feed.

axwax,

@joel While it has been perfectly workable for the last 1.5 years, I have definitely held back a lot of German posts because of that rule.

Anyway, that's just a nice-to-have, but I'm just not sure any more if me and admins are still on the same wavelength...

axwax,

@mcdanlj @3DPrintingDad @Beerbruin

Thank you , that's some great detective work!

Funnily that list was partly based on (and massively expanded upon) a makers list I compiled last year, but had abandoned. It's a small (Makers) world 😀

I think I might eventually move to chaos.social as an instance after all, as it might cover my non-making interests just a little bit more and as a bonus is hosted in Germany.

makersocial.online looks like a really cool place though, and @splicer is a great guy!

Meanwhile happened. I use the most DIY system possible: bottles, 3d printed inserts that allow refilling, and where I didn't use inserts, there are pieces of disposable straw.
Growing on South side open balcony in 30+C is quite different from grow lights inside they use in the videos. Those plants drink a lot, and some liquid evaporates, so I need to refill a lot and designed and printed a tiny funnel to fit the straw (not pictured).

axwax,

@Triffen

Very cool!

What filament are you using? I assume it gets too hot for PLA?

My LED Orb project that I wrote up for @makemagazine is currently on the website with no paywall at https://makezine.com/projects/orb-sessed-led-sphere/ if anyone feels like tackling a fiddly, challenging, time-consuming project with a really cool end result! I'm very proud of the design as well as the very high pun-to-word-count ratio in the article.

Yotam 's Chermoulah Aubergine with bulgur:

▶️ https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2010/jun/12/chermoula-aubergine-bulgar-recipe-ottolenghi

It does look complicated, but it's actually a super straightforward recipe that looks and tastes like something that takes infinetely more time and skill to make. Also perhaps the easier to photograph food of all I regularly cook 😅

Also perfect for this super stressful and full day at work.

axwax,

@vicgrinberg

Yum! I'm always up for new aubergine based dishes, and this looks delicious!

I'm opening a gallery this week. Sure, it's in my front yard, and it can only handle small art... but the Free Little Art Gallery is (nearly) open!

Let me know if you want to contribute any art.

I'm super chuffed that I've just found the adorable @smolrobots on the !
(I'm a little bit late to the party)

Go and give them a follow, they could deal with some - and you may need some more in your life too!

On a side note: Having beautiful on images has the nice side effect that unconventional Mastodon media browsers like mine get to display them in all their glory (in addition to making them accessible to more hoomans).

axwax,

@recantha @smolrobots

Thanks!

Yes, I'm using the Mastodon library to grab media posts from a personal timeline (as I've done here), federated timeline, or a hashtag (uncomment as needed).

I've got a few more details/examples in this thread: https://fosstodon.org/@axwax/109387591987178692

and the code can be found at https://github.com/axwax/MastoInky

Let me know how you get on if you do try it - I haven't touched it since last November, so the library may have changed since then!

axwax,

@andypiper @recantha

One of these days I'd really like to attempt to replace the Pi Zero with a and redoing this in .

I did have a quick go last autumn trying to modify 's "Inky Frame" code to make it work with my "Inky Developer", but couldn't get it to work at the time.

Iirc I somehow got lost between the InkyFrame driver and the PicoGraphics library.

@gadgetoid, would you know perhaps if anyone's used the InkyDeveloper with MicroPython succesfully?

Made my second sling bag in two days. This one is a "half-moon" bag I made following a YouTube video. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mub9Kbs3LE) It was surprisingly straightforward to sew, and a good opportunity to use my recent impulse purchase of floral canvas fabric (it was on sale!) The only feature I don't love is that the lining is finished with binding on the inside, but no one else will see that part.

axwax,

@geekmomprojects That's a very cool fabric (and resulting bag)!

Hacking about with a PSS-680 using an Arduino to access additional synth parameters over MIDI - in this case changing the sIne table used for the FM carrier operator.

Here is an Arduino MIDI interface/debug shield/monitor that makes working with MIDI a little easier (as you can still Serial.print!).

https://diyelectromusic.wordpress.com/2023/07/30/simple-midi-serial-monitor-part-3/

axwax,

@diyelectromusic Ooh, DIN and TRS MIDI on the same board - nice!

axwax, to random

I finally got round to put together a simple based MIDI/audio setup to play with some of those brilliant experiments by @todbot .

In this clip I'm checking out polyphony and a couple of sounds using a Pico Lipo hooked up to their Pico Audio Pack and @adafruit's MIDI FeatherWing (via a dodgy and bodgy DIY adapter).

His code can be found at https://github.com/todbot/qtpy_synth (I think I based my experiment on hwtest7).

Atop a wooden desk an Arturia KeyStep 37 is connected to a Pimoroni Pico Lipo board with MIDI input and i2s audio output. I plug the MCU and a speaker into a power bank and proceed to play a little bassline, followed by a few chords on a couple of different sounds. In the process I adjust 4 knobs on the keyboard which are MIDI mapped to attack, decay, release and wavetable select.

axwax,

@diyelectromusic @todbot @adafruit

Very nice! - that would certainly be a vast improvement over my abomination of an adaptor!

Now, if it had another 3-4 slots for moar Pico Packs / PiCowbells (and for bonus points an onboard i2s DAC) I'd be super excited... 😉
