Likely part of the reason why the good news about real wages hasn’t broken through to the public is that media have frequently framed wage growth as a concern, rather than as a positive development that allows people to defend themselves from rising prices.

Inside the MAGA bubble, the economy is awful, no one has a job, and Biden is asleep.

In the land of reality and statistics, the economy is doing well and Americans are better off. One reason why is that Democrats and Joe Biden are better at operating the country and it’s economy and pass good legislation that invests in workers and families as a whole.

We interrupt this program to bring you this important announcement:

🚨 Constantly attention-seeking man-baby billionaire said something dumb. 🚨

It is highly unlikely that this piece of news will change anyone's mind about anything at all.

However, we can at this time predict that some people might get outraged and thus click on our article. And in the end, that is what matters.

In other breaking news tonight:

  1. water is wet;
  2. bears shit in the woods;
  3. Pope is, in fact, Catholic.

bhahne,
@bhahne@mastodon.online avatar

@rysiek Thank you for pointing this out.

The constant churn of trigger-event-followed-by-outrage is sometimes referred to as a "call and response", in the sense of a religious liturgy. The inflammatory personality issues the "call", and progressives dutifully issue a liturgical outrage "response" that amplifies the original call.

This call-and-response cycle provides energy, power, and algorithmic social media boosts to the caller, plus it delights the right-wing fanbase.

Planning my year-end giving, and looking for charities that give direct aid to trans folks trying to access gender affirming care in states that restrict such care. Would love suggestions if anyone has them! (Must be a registered 501(c)3.)

@adamconover The Southern Trans Youth Emergency Project is a strong match for what you're describing.

https://southernequality.org/styep/

"...provides rapid response support directly to the families of youth who are impacted by anti-transgender healthcare bans in the South. ... we are providing grants, patient navigation support, and accurate information to impacted families to ensure that youth can access the care they need and deserve, even in the face of oppressive laws."

About YouTube and ad-blockers:

YouTube is owned by Alphabet, aka Google's umbrella corporation. Google in turn was devoured by DoubleClick, the largest advertising company to come out of the 1990s web.

When you use Google, you are feeding the attention monster that is the advertising industry.

We should aim to criminalize behavioural advertising and break up the Google monopoly, not tolerate their shit and work around it by using adblockers.

bhahne,
@bhahne@mastodon.online avatar

@cstross
A correction - Google wasn't "devoured by DoubleClick" - the opposite is true. Google purchased Doubleclick in 2008 and integrated its technology into its broader advertising stack. Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DoubleClick

Antitrust writer Matt Stoller is in favor of breaking up Google, and does single out Google's 2008 acquisition of Doubleclick as a huge mistake for antitrust enforcers: https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/mergers-ruin-everything

35 years ago today, I walked in to the CS department where I was a grad student, and bumped in to my advisor, who asked, somewhat worriedly, "Matt, did you do this?" I had no idea what he was talking about, which is exactly what I would have said if I had done it.

    I, a straight person, have a question. I'm talking about homophobia in a draft blog piece, and what’s a good choice of word for the people that homophobes dislike and abuse? Has it got to the point where “queer” is respectful and appropriate? Is “LGBTQ” better? “Gender-diverse”? (I think I’m correct to think that “homophobe” has grown to include anti-trans and gender-related bigotries generally?) Who has written a really good essay on the subject? Thanks in advance.

    @timbray
    PFLAG currently prefers "LGBTQ+"

    Also see their glossary entry and caveats on the use of "queer": https://pflag.org/glossary/#q

    (Queer): "... Traditionally a negative or pejorative term for people who are LGBTQ+, some people within the community dislike the term. Due to its varying meanings, use this word only when self-identifying or quoting an individual who self-identifies as queer (i.e., “My cousin identifies as queer” or “My cousin is a queer person”)."
