Telcos filed blank robocall plans with FCC and got away with it for 2 years

FCC received blank pages, a Windows Printer Test, and an "indiscernible object."

@arstechnica "20 telcos you never heard of".
Of course, that's where the robocalls come from.

the checklist version of the manifesto:

  1. free for personal use
  2. interoperable local plain text files
  3. no telemetry
  4. E2E encryption
  5. flexible API for desktop and mobile
  6. actively maintained/patched
  7. no VC funding
billseitz,

@kepano I'll be curious to see how sustainable this business model is.

Traditional downtowns are dead or dying in many U.S. cities − what’s next for these zones? https://www.tucsonsentinel.com/opinion/report/101323_downtown_growth_op/traditional-downtowns-are-dead-or-dying-many-us-cities-8722-whats-next-these-zones/
Many cities are confronting the prospect of an urban doom loop, with a massive oversupply of office and retail space, fewer commuters and a looming urban fiscal crisis, and the growth of commercial office complexes that has long been promoted has probably come to an end.

billseitz,

@TucsonSentinel can we "convert" such areas to high-ish-density mixed-use/residential space, and de-sprawl to reduce carbon?

OK fedi, I want to make sure I'm not missing things—please point me to the best arguments on how decentralizing/federating content moderation + other safety work improves outcomes for humans in a world where fedi scales up fast over the next year, compared to centralized networks.

(For adversarial stuff incl spam, CSAM, coordinated inauthentic account networks/influence campaigns, hate speech, semi-pro trolling, professional and non-professional disinfo, covert adversarial instances, etc.)

It's been interesting to observe the shift away from hosted cloud-based feed readers to native apps after those started to ship their own subscription syncing solutions (iCloud-based for both NNW and Reeder, I think).

The numbers are probably way off from reality but the shift in clients seems to be real.

Instead of geographic districts in each states here is a crazy idea. Let the representatives draw the districts. Draw a district where you think you can win with the correct population. The districts can overlap. But the area of the district must be at least 60% of the area of the smallest rectangle that can cover the region and genus 0.

Everyone gets to vote Yes/No on all candidates that cover them.

(Second thought it's beyond impractical. But, the political strategies would be WILD)

People who live in the city proper in reaalllly underestimate how much fun and how much good trouble you can get in in the near suburbs. I have never had a problem with either of those things. If you tell me that you can’t find good food, good cocktails or good entertainment - or even good places open late, you are not trying hard enough or honesty just have a bad attitude. Because I go to both.

Some Auntie Lesley Chicago suburb recommendations:

I HAVE TO GO INTO THE CITY TO GET GOOD CRAFT COCKTAILS:
Northcott Liquorette
Subourbon
Common Good
Lilac Lounge
Maize & Mash

AND STAND IN LINE FOR THREE DOTS:
Hala Kahiki

EVERYTHING CLOSES EARLY IN THE SUBURBS (just a few chains):

The "New Outlook" demands that when adding your #Gmail account, you also give Microsoft a copy of all your Gmail email, contacts, and calendar data.

The "Learn More" link confirms:

"Syncing your account to the Microsoft Cloud means that a copy of your email, calendar, and contacts will be synchronized between your email provider and Microsoft data centers."

WOW.

Good time to switch to @thunderbird, folks!

I am not going to do another technical book [1], but if I did, high on the list would be something like "Software Design by Example" that builds working models of tools for reproducible data science/ML from scratch. Dozens or hundreds of such tools have been built in the last 20 years, and an equal number of papers published, but we seem no closer to converging on a standard model than we were in 2003.
[1] Unless some enlightened company hires me to write.

billseitz,

@gvwilson @ianbicking also, as pro-digital as I am, if you're trying to build a movement of standard-followers, a book is probably more effective.

I, for one, am not complaining about my books being in in large language model training sets. I write to enter ideas into public discourse. I prefer informed over ignorant AI. I believe it is fair use for anyone to read & use books for transformative work. In fact, I'd probably feel snubbed if my books were not there. I'm happy when they are in libraries. I'm fine that they're here.
