Serious question: why is it that so many people apparently have real problems adopting ISO 8601 dates and UTC, in a professional context?

As in, are those somehow fundamentally incompatible with human nature? Or do people just completely lack the cultural awareness to understand that some of their colleagues are used to a different date format than they are, or live in a different timezone, or don't use daylight saving time?

@xahteiwi I almost always link to a conversion service like https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20240526T050000&p1=202&p2=236&p3=240&p4=1038&p5=3925&p6=1440. Anything less is disrespectful and risks a miscommunication.

@xahteiwi I’m usually making events for people in many time zones but I don’t always know for sure what zone everyone is in. If I’ve done the work to pick a time that I think works for most/everyone (using said converter) then it’s easy to share it so other people can easily add in their own zone without doing math in case I missed one.

I think it’s a phrase that causes a lot more harm than good because it’s quoted so often out of context and used frequently as a cudgel by leadership to force top down consensus when it was originally intended to be a reminder to leaders to trust the people you hired."

    Somewhat niche question.

    Suppose I have SVG files, which include some text (labels, and such like). And I want to use those images in several reveal.js presentations using different themes, which means the presentations use different default fonts.

    Do I have a way to ensure that the text in the SVG is rendered in the same font as the HTML it's embedded in? If so, how?

    (Boosts appreciated. Helpful comments too, obviously. 🙂)

    binford2k,
    @binford2k@hachyderm.io avatar

    @preya @xahteiwi not only that, but you can write CSS selectors to target the text elements in your SVG directly and style them (mostly) like any other elements.

    Who among you runs long distance in Vibram FiveFingers? I'm looking for model recommendations. I absolutely love my KSO Evo, and it's the best shoe I've ever run in, but I've found that I can put barely 300 kilometres' worth of training on them before the sole wears through.

    @xahteiwi I run marathons. Currently rocking the V-Run but have had several, including Bikila. Tbh, I have the same wear issue as you. But I cheat and periodically paint on a new sole with shoe goo and I generally now get about 1200 k.

    @xahteiwi I did a form of this just yesterday. I signed up for a lightning talk recycling something that had been Covid canceled. It was based off a blog post. Turns out that I never actually wrote the deck and I had just a few rushed minutes to brain dump out some words and it really needed an apology.

    Generally speaking though, I don’t get offended but it rarely comes across well.

    I wish I truly understood why people don't get that "reduce costs" is exactly the same thing as "increase revenue."

    Like I know the accounting bullshit, but we're not children anymore. We should understand nuance.

    @gepandz Sure. But ultimately it's all just math. Sustainability == (income > expenditures).

    binford2k,
    @binford2k@hachyderm.io avatar

    @gepandz as a concrete example of the context I'm thinking in -- giving away the puppetlabs/apache module for "free" reduces the support costs from customers who'd otherwise have to build their own.
