I have been thinking about adding a section to this blog where I share unrefined fragments in an unpolished way, something like a journal I suppose. I'm unsure about its value, both to me and to anyone else, but I nonetheless want to try it out.

bioluminescently,
@bioluminescently@disabled.social avatar

@nathanlovestrees Another friend has that distinction on his site, where he does long, developed essays on a Substack-like model, and then has more of a "notepad" type thing for shorter entries about ideas he's kicking around. I know I enjoy that a lot as a reader, so I'm intrigued that you're thinking of something similar.

bioluminescently,
@bioluminescently@disabled.social avatar

@nathanlovestrees Yeah, I've thought about doing a newsletter for certain subjects, but it would take me to be VERY confident of my health + able to build up enouhg of a stockpile of articles in advance to have content available for when my health inevitably behaves unpredictably, and I think I'm a long way off being able to devote enough energy to that.

What’s your best piece of relationship advice?

bioluminescently,
@bioluminescently@disabled.social avatar

@girlonthenet

Don't move in with someone without understanding their relationship with their family, and knowing if it's something you can live with if it never improves.

Most families have issues of some kind, and some of them are big issues. But I was very late and slow to catch on that lifelong parental emotional abuse was being redirected onto me by an ex deeply in denial about both halves of that problem.

And relatedly: be aware your own family background can normalise red flags.

Is explaining one's poetry akin to explaining why a joke is funny?

As someone who is both not a poet or funny I'm genuinely asking if explaining my (poor attempts at) poetry is frowned upon.

(I might do it anyway; I like your frowns)

bioluminescently,
@bioluminescently@disabled.social avatar

@nathanlovestrees I think it's okay to explain it if you want to, and if anything I enjoy it when authors explain their poetry or their prose, but I don't know if a broad consensus exists one way or the other.

    look I have been doing nonmonogamy a long ass time and so clemclem morrygun has been circling my communities from across the atlantic for a long time also and let me tell you. They have always written shit that makes me feel like i'm fully losing touch with reality when I read it. They have always had fucked up interpersonal politics (the big one for me was when they said in a blog back in 2016 that they regrettably demanded that their partner dump everyone else because for their mental health they needed to be monogamous bc of insecurity). The weird "anti-idpol" shit they're doing now which strays ever closer to outright terf and redbrown dogwhistles... This is all just background noise to the fact that, in the poly scene, I know of no better predictor for someone behaving extremely poorly, treating people disposably and being aggressively hostile to criticism or accountability, than for someone to say they like her work.

    bioluminescently,
    @bioluminescently@disabled.social avatar

    @dragora @skuppr

    Thank you both for highlighting this. She promotes fucked up ideas about abuse too, and I wish to god I hadn't taken her writing on the subject on board while extricating myself from an abusive relationship.

    Basically her logic is that asking our abusers for accountability is the same as "acting like cops to each other" - and she's a survivor, so of course her position is unassailable, even though she's protecting a serially abusive partner. 🙄

    @lilithsaintcrow The related thing that's been nagging at me this week is the BookBub ads I keep getting with the slogan "don't overpay for books," and then they're offering them on sale for a pound or two.

    My problem isn't with sales or bargains - I love that they get books into people's hands who couldn't otherwise buy them. It's how that use of that word "overpay" in this wider context connotes more than just "shop around for the best deal" but an absolutism about what books are "worth".

    Someone's asked me to remind people to set the image focus / crop centre tool when uploading images on Mastodon.

    Although the Mastodon default web interface no longer crops images, some other apps and interfaces do, and images may be difficult to see on some timelines if the focus hasn't been set.

    To set focus on Mastodon web interface:

    1. Attach image
    2. Click Edit
    3. Choose focus point
    4. Click Apply

    Apps will have various interfaces for setting focus.

    CAMHS Mistreatment of Autistic young people: A case study

    I have explored (extensively) the issues with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in England. The particular focus of my writing has been their mistreatment of Autistic children and young people. Something I haven't touched on is there well documented mishandling of processes around the assessment and diagnosis of autism itself. This has been a point of contention for some time now between…

    When you say "go to the doctor" to an Autistic person, you won't necessarily realise what a difficult position they are placed in.

    So often we are told that if our problems were "that bad" we would see a doctor.

    The truth is that healthcare is inaccessible to many Autistic people for a vast array of reasons. From ableism through to doctors who think studies on the general population should inform the treatment of minority bodies.

    This is one of the biggest things I want people to understand about being autistic in an NT world. NT people who've had good experiences with their doctors can assume we'll meet the same reasonability (medical racism and misogyny are also overlooked). Sometimes if someone accompanies us they'll see things that persuade them, but other times a witness's presence deters discrimination, which is practical but masks the issue...

    Hugz & xXx

    bioluminescently,
    @bioluminescently@disabled.social avatar

    @melissabeartrix Seriously. In stores that have installed a ton of self checkouts, the staff seem to have to spend ages dealing with them going wrong, or showing customers how to use them because no two chains' systems are identical and we get muddled about whether the items are meant to pass to the right or left, or where to scan the loyalty card...

    I need to get my iPhone serviced, but it's my only phone. What do people do in this situation?

    Do they give you a loaner, or do I need to get a cheap burner phone or something like that?

    I don't want to be without a phone for days.

    [Update: I have lots of good advice in the comments. Thank you!]

    bioluminescently,

    @grammargirl I recommend keeping a burner phone on hand in case anything happens. I've had two situations in the past year when I've had an extended need for a spare phone, and it's worthwhile making it a pretty decent one, i.e. don't use anything so cheap and dated that it adds a lot of friction to your day. I've learned that one to my cost!
