If any fediverse platform devs are interested, it appears you could request a collaboration with Facebook / Instagram to create a "Transfer Your Information" process.

This would allow users to just click a button and have their posts converted over to another platform rather than deal with the whole archive export / import.

There's already one for Wordpress and Blogroll.

My mom has dementia. She loves social media. It's her way to connect to those she loves in a safe way.

We monitor her usage and interactions with others. At some point, we will need more control.

I refuse to take this joy away, so I'm always on the lookout for tools with better moderation and safeguards.

Facebook has "teenage supervision" which fits the bill, but stupidly they restrict supervision to people 13-17 years old.

I'm going to find a solution, even if I have to build it myself.

I spent some time this weekend fiddling with @Edent tiny ActivityPub server. This isn't production code, rather a lab exercise.

In short - This was fun. It’s easy to read the code and breaking it has no major effect on anyone else. Go have fun, hit it with hammers, destroy it, recreate it. Don’t be scared to play and learn.

My Raspberry Pi that runs BirdNet tends to get hotter than I like, around 65-70C. And this is in a window in the dead of winter. When Texas summer rolls around... 🔥🔥

Anyway, I bought this Flirc case, which is all aluminum, fanless...and now it's sitting at around 39-40C! Worth it.

My most popular blog post continues to be about Mastodon Preview Cards generation.

I've updated it to include a few more tidbits:

The image attached to the link must be less than 2 MB in size (the default config from Mastodon) or the image won't be used.

Once a Masotodn server has generated a link preview (image attached or not), it's cached for 14 days before it will attempt to refresh it. This one needs some testing.

My husband has had two heart surgeries and is on a blood thinner. Even a little cut bleeds much more than you can imagine! So I’m headed out to learn how to “stop the bleed” this morning. Hoping I don’t faint. 😅

‼️ If you have your #Spoutible account linked to your Mastodon or Bluesky account, you need to take action to revoke those access tokens.

Mastodon > Preferences > Account > Authorized Apps > Spoutible
Bluesky > Settings > Advanced > App Passwords

Audit and revoke anything else you're not using anymore, while you're at it.

As of this morning, ProxMox has been installed after a few hiccups with a static IP mismatch. Belgarath is spinning.

The good news - I can now complete the install and post-install steps in my sleep.

Next up - a backup plan, and learning about templates.

What to install first? I hear pfSense and Portainer often.

The founding developer of Firefish has officially stepped down from the project. Keys are being transferred to one of the dev leads.

It appears Firefish IS still breathing, albeit flopping around at the edge of the pond right now.

Many instances migrated to other Forkeys - Sharkey or IceShrimp. A newcomer, Catodon, is also emerging.

Glad to see Firefish given a chance to survive, and wish them the best!

It’s late, but I wanted to see how far along I could get on the ProxMox install. It’s up and running, following a collection of walk throughs and videos I found. But, storage…

ProxMox on a 2TB NVME SSD drive.
Additional 2TB HDD, formatted but not used.
No other disks.

What’s the best way to allocate this storage? I’m thinking I should have switched the install to the other disk…

When I'm learning a techie thing, I don't tend to stick to one form of media. First, I search the web or ask on social media for recommendations.

Once I have a basic understanding of the concept, the media choice depends on the type of techie thing. CSS? Love videos. How to install server software? I'll read it, thank you.

The more trepidation I have of a new concept, the more probable it is that I will search out a friendly face on a video platform to ease my mind.
