NewsMast is out with quite an interesting update. Oversimplifying it a bit, but with this open sourced project, anyone can spin up what is essentially a custom feed server populated from relays and human curated content.

It can be included in ANY app, not just NewsMast.

Want a custom feed for Cat pics? Only posts about Taylor Swift? Have at it.

Hmmm interesting Threads find - if you don't put alt text on your images, they attempt to guess at what it is and add it for you - and it federates with the image.

It's not very confident in it's answer, always seem to be "Photo by {yourName} on {date}, may be an image of {noun}."

Always better to add your own. But for people who just aren't going to do it, I guess it's better than nothing.

My mom has dementia. She loves social media. It's her way to connect to those she loves in a safe way.

We monitor her usage and interactions with others. At some point, we will need more control.

I refuse to take this joy away, so I'm always on the lookout for tools with better moderation and safeguards.

Facebook has "teenage supervision" which fits the bill, but stupidly they restrict supervision to people 13-17 years old.

I'm going to find a solution, even if I have to build it myself.

If any fediverse platform devs are interested, it appears you could request a collaboration with Facebook / Instagram to create a "Transfer Your Information" process.

This would allow users to just click a button and have their posts converted over to another platform rather than deal with the whole archive export / import.

There's already one for Wordpress and Blogroll.

Setting up for live streaming the #Oscars tonight on @phanpy , which still seems to be the best choice for such things.

Profile -> Shortcuts / Columns -> Add Shortcut -> Hashtag Timeline.

Add the following hashtags: "oscars oscars2024 oscar oscar2024".

Settings -> Auto refresh timeline posts

Then find your shortcut in the lightning bolt icon.

New posts stream in along the top without refreshing the page. Really great experience. 🎉

An interesting find with self-labelling of posts (Content Warnings) on BlueSky compared to Mastodon.

For whatever reason, you can only self-label your posts with images in them. So if your words are suggestive in some way, you're out of luck. There's nothing in their docs about requiring an image, but that's the way their app works (and some third party apps)

I enjoyed following the posts made to the #FediForum tag, discovered a bit belatedly due to cross-posting with #MastoAdmin.

I would like to find more events and conversations relevant to Fediverse administrators. The hashtags are one place, but they're not appropriate for every topic. Is there any sort of ongoing online forum for us?

The closest I found last year was a closed Discord run by one particular server, and tightly bound to that server's political bent. Fine for what it was, but.
