Dear @mozilla
Please, please, please put the RSS indicator back in Firefox.

People need to know about this technology which empowers users over greedy, controlling corporations.

Update: As many have pointed out, you can use @thunderbird as an RSS feed reader, and there are many add-ons to restore the RSS indicator (one of which I'm already using). But my point is that Firefox needs to lean into RSS as an answer to all the crap that is the modern web, and help educate users about it

clacke,

Firefox v64 (2018) removed Live Bookmarks and the feed indicator.

On Saturday, the Fediverse is celebrating it's 16th anniversary!

How are you celebrating?

#fediverse16years

clacke,

Tonight when I should have been sleeping or writing some stuff for work, I accidentally took a walk down fedi memory lane. Someone posted on their profile which accounts they had when, and I was inspired and made yet another attempt to locate some fragments of posts on servers long gone.

This time I was successful!

clacke,

A brief timeline Fedi and my life on it:

2008-05-18 @evan fires up identi.ca, the beginning of it all:

web.archive.org/web/2008061816…

This is my first post.

2008-10-14 I joined identi.ca. I don't know what my first post was.

Woah, awesome.

> When two ions passed by each other without colliding, some of their virtual photons interacted and turned into real photons with very high energy. These photons then collided with each other and produced electron-positron pairs, which were detected by the STAR detector at RHIC. The scientists analyzed more than 6,000 such pairs and found that their angular distribution matched the theoretical prediction for matter creation from light.

Things developers believe about shipping addresses:

  • Addresses worldwide look like yours.
  • Addresses have any kind of standard format whatsoever.

I have been eagerly waiting for a parcel for weeks. Now I found out it had been returned to the sender in Europe, because half of the address lines didn't make it into the shipping order.

My address looks like this

Flat N, XX/F, Tower YY, Some Residential Complex
Z Some Street, A District
Hong Kong

The address the shipping company captured was:

Flat N
Z Some Street
A District
Hong Kong

That matches two residential complexes , a shopping mall, a management office and a bunch of street-level shops, of which one residential complex has 600 flats N, the other, I don't know, maybe 100 flats N.

The seller kindly shipped it again and this time I noticed the fragmentary address in the mail from the shipping company. I hope it can be updated so that I'll get my precious goods.

I was wondering why it was taking weeks when it was supposedly by air.

Also, tracking just said "left country of origin" for three weeks, nothing more.

Both Barbie and Oppenheimer are at their core about our moral responsibility when we create technology and how technology and politics can never be truly separate. They just wrap it differently.

Hoot is a Scheme to WebAssembly compiler backend for Guile, as well as a general purpose WebAssembly toolchain. In other words, Scheme in the browser!

Cool. Cool.

  • Compatible with Firefox 121 or later.
  • Compatible with Google Chrome 119 or later.
  • Safari/WebKit is unsupported, unfortunately, as Wasm GC and tail calls are still not available.

So there's GC in WASM now! That's very cool. So that's what makes Scheme possible ... without implementing a whole GC within WASM itself.

Oh this is a brilliant ruling. Bring back accountability! Stop the trend of outsourcing your decisions to an opaque box, then blaming the box.

"It does not explain why it believes that is the case" or "why the webpage titled 'Bereavement travel' was inherently more trustworthy than its chatbot."> Further, Rivers found that Moffatt had "no reason" to believe that one part of Air Canada's website would be accurate and another would not.

As a repost or maybe even quote-repost of a comment to a comment from a toxic site won't federate to many well-configured fedi sites, here's Torvalds's response to the comment about the NYTimes being "woke communist propaganda":

"""
I think you might want to make sure you don’t follow me.Because your “woke communist propaganda” comment makes me think you’re a moron of the first order.

I strongly suspect am one of those “woke communists” you worry about. But you probably couldn’t actually explain what either of those words actually mean, could you?

I’m a card-carrying atheist, I think a woman’s right to choose is very important, I think that “well regulated militia” means that guns should be carefully licensed and not just randomly given to any moron with a pulse, and I couldn’t care less if you decided to dress up in the “wrong” clothes or decided you’d rather live your life without feeling tied to whatever plumbing you were born with.

And dammit, if that all makes me “woke”, then I think anybody who uses that word as a pejorative is a f*cking disgrace to the human race. So please just unfollow me right now.

Twitter has left the web. You can't link there anymore and expect people to see anything. It's part of the dark web now. Alternative frontends aren't getting any data either.

It's time to sing the praises of cwebber again, haven't done it for a while, haha.

@cwebber I'm so impressed and humbled by everything you've accomplished and are accomplishing!

(together with others, as you'll be the first to point out, but you're the guiding light all the way back, you can't deny that)

Back when you announced "I'm building a media hosting service" I was thinking "yeah yeah, aren't we all", but dammit, you did it. Not just a basement hack, but a full-blown project with funding and contributors! An application able to host all the LibrePlanet media!

And you didn't stop there. You thought, hmm, this would be neater federated, and years of trials and tribulations later we had the current version of the FRIKKIN FEDIVERSE.

"Free software and the shifting landscape of online cooperation"

Benjamin Mako Hill talks about how social commonses created methods and tools that were then learned and coopted by corporations, how some corporations that were incidental allies of Free Software two decades ago no longer are, and what that means for Free Software activism today and in the future.

I was going to ask Evan if he could find the current URL for the very first identi.ca post, but turns out he already did that for the anniversary post a year ago. =)

Cert on identi.ca is currently failing.

clacke,

Posted by Evan for #fedi15 (last year):

identi.ca/evan/note/6EZ4Jzp5RQ…
web.archive.org/web/2/identi.c… @evan

Fifteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.web.archive.org/web/2008061816…

It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that.

identi.ca/evan/note/Y0QwGyc1QY…

Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.

Someday soon-ish I'd like to have identi.ca working with ActivityPub. When I get the time for it!
