Hard to imagine a signal that a website is a rugpull more intense than banning users for trying to delete their own posts

@mcc an article went around recently about "rewilding" the Internet that made the analogy to clear cutting an old growth forest. You get incredible wood, but you can only do it once.

Encrypted DMs Are Coming to ActivityPub (wedistribute.org)

The prospect of making the Fediverse more secure is an ongoing topic, with a number of developers, privacy advocates, and user communities weighing in on how to do it. On Tuesday evening, ActivityPub spec co-author Evan Prodromou announced that he and Tom Coates have received a grant to develop end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for...

I've been seeing discussions lately around the YouTube fascism algorithm [not directed at me] implying that if you get those suggestions it's because that's material you have sought out.
Not true.

It's been studied and repeatedly shown--like a vehicle w/poor alignment--suggestions will drift to the right pretty quickly.
To "never" get them, you must
a) be outside targeted demographics AND
b) not look at DIY, repair, survivalism, building, cooking, sewing, politics, animal husbandry, automotive

We tried to simulate 1000 viewers on a video, and then on a livestream. (Note that 99% of twitch livestreams are under 1000 simultaneous views.)

We optimized accordingly... And here are the results: it works!

With a ~20$ server, PeerTube can now support such usecases.

The recent excitement surrounding Thread's arrival on the Fediverse is concerning. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Don't roll out the red carpet for them.

Do I know anyone here who is willing to share their experience deploying an institutional Mastodon server? A contact of mine is looking for someone to discuss the experience as he works on getting a government agency to deploy their own instance. Boosts appreciated #fediverse #mastodon

@Drbruced I’d suggest talking to my colleague @judeswae , who wrote https://martinfowler.com/articles/your-org-run-mastodon.html

@Drbruced Universities may be a special case but @uniinnsbruck just went public with their server and I suspect they are happy to share their experience.

Yesterday I got yelled at by a turning driver stopped at the crossing walk I was using while the pedestrian signal was green because I was texting as I was walking at a pretty good pace.

Nothing would have changed for them if I didn't have my phone or even if I wasn’t there as other people were crossing too.

What an asshole.

About 109 billion people have lived & died. Each grain of sand represents 10 million.
This stunning data visualization of human life by Max Roser was published in 2022.

Today there would be 805 green grains representing 8.05 billion people living on Earth. #science #art

Despite the sadness of seeing them leave the platform I'm working on, I can't express how cool it is to be able to still follow people who moved to any other platform #Friendica is compatible with, including Mastodon, Diaspora, and more, all from my same account.

It's completely unheard of in most other social media context, and yet here it's completely seamless.

hypolite,

@me There's already a connector addon for contributed by @heluecht that will be released this September.

I just read another news article about why mastodon didn’t make it and is dying. It’s very sad to hear and probably explains why I have to keep adding more server capacity to handle all the people quitting mastodon.

Something to keep in mind when hearing about hydrogen as a renewable or green fuel is that nearly half of hydrogen production, worldwide, comes from natural gas. Another 45% or so come from coal and oil sources. Renewable hydrogen - electrolysis, generally - is basically a blip.

Hydrogen is, in many cases, an attempt by the fossil fuels industry to carry on business as usual in the face of carbon-reduction initiatives by putting the carbonaceous parts out of sight.

Well fuck - they have just undeleted posts I made years ago that I'd removed when I did a purge a couple of years back.

So Reddit didn't actually delete the data - also these videos are no longer on YT so the thumb is cached

They are so fucked

@tanepiper I just went back to check comments I deleted 7 fucking years ago and sure enough they're back. just wtf. I had done a purge and deleted an alt account of mine since it had personal details relating trans stuff back when I first came out. reddit just went ahead and undeleted all of that wtfff.

It wasn't until digging into Musk background after the whole going after the guy who criticized his cave rescue submarine stunt that I realized how many times he just made shit up as on the verge of existing or 1-2 years away tops to have it be total BS. Good news, now there is a site that tracks it. It is truly mind bending that people take what he says at face value any longer. He is more grifter and charlatan than "real world Tony Stark" tech genius. The data is all there for you to see for yourself. elonmusk.today/
