I find it impossibly challenging to know how to live in a world surrounded by people who show me everyday by their actions that they want me dead.

You do not care. You have no moral compass.

I know you will kill me or leave me severely disabled if I let you. If I weren’t already resisting with everything I’ve got it would already be happening. Especially this week in Spain at

Fuck all of you who have such little regard for other people’s lives. You do not have the right to eliminate me.

colorfiend,

@markusl @migriverat @maggiemaybe @jensimmons This summer, I actually changed from an infusion every six weeks to a shot I give myself every other week because the INFUSION CLINIC STOPPED MASKING. And my nurse rolled her eyes when I asked her to mask up at what became my last appointment. No patient in that clinic has an immune system, but sure, screw masks.

What bird is it? I know people use this Internet thing to identify birds? I never…

Edit: it's Pacific Northwest, if that helps.

@isagalaev I don't think so. It's a Cornell Labs app so I took a quick peek (https://www.allaboutbirds.org/) and it sent me to app store.

Seeking gardening advice and encouragement!

Some previous occupant of my house planted a more or less inedible member of the mint family which has since spread to infest the entire back garden.

I've tried digging clear patches (heavy clay: backbreaking, and it just grows back), and building no-dig beds (worked for a season, then failure to thrive due to root competition).

Does anyone have any suggestions that don't presuppose either a fat budget or boundless energy? I'd prefer not to do anything that is going to destroy all soil life, but I'm getting desperate and am open to suggestions.

colorfiend,

@DMakarios And you don't have to do huge pots or do it all at once. I am impatient, and I have a teenager I can guilt into lifting heavy things for me. Plus, he hates mint and oregano for flowering and bringing bees onto the patio (they can be anywhere else, just not where he sits), so he's more than happy to kill off the invasive stuff.

I'm still testing negative. But will continue to test.

I was really hoping we could come through all of this without ever catching it.

There’s something spectacular about enduring a ridiculously choppy boat ride for 4 hours and then arriving at the Farallon Islands. While it doesn’t look far from San Francisco on a map, the waters are treacherous and the journey from Half Moon Bay is arduous. People puke nonstop. Thankfully blessed with no motion sickness whatsoever, I try to take photos of the marine and other wildlife I see. Thousands of murres, hundreds of sea lions, a beautiful cacophony.

Considering the recent escape prisoners issue in Chester County PA I have one idea on how to fix their problem and it would only cost about 20.00.

I say measure off the top 2 ft of both sides of the wall and cover with vaseline petroleum jelly. Don't say a word... next person to try the same escape will lose more than their grip about 4 feet in the air, face first. (Smack)

colorfiend,

@kkarhan @appagalcrochet This would work. I use mineral oil on the shepherd's crook that holds the bird feeder. Keeps the damn squirrels from emptying it. Plus, watching them lose all hope of achieving anything as they slide back to the ground is delightful. Seriously fun for me.

I love having a CO2 monitor to check the air quality in indoor spaces (my grocery store, my dentist’s office, etc.). I’m relieved when stores have good ratings, and I’ve convinced my dentist’s office to open windows to get the rating down to an acceptable level.

I use an and thanks to @brainwane I learned they are on sale (at quite a discount) until Sept. 17. Highly recommended for the Covid-cautious who don’t have one already.

I love Flavacol (popcorn salt) but it's SO fine-grained I can't measure the stuff out properly, not by eye. I almost always oversalt at least a bit. A lot this time.

What do you all do? Measure it beforehand and try to sprinkle it evenly or are there like ULTRA choked shakers that slow it's pouring?

Argg. So infuriating.

The risk of long COVID is ~10%.

The risk of lung cancer in smokers is ~10%.

If you wouldn't smoke, you should take COVID seriously too.

I know multiple people with long COVID. You don't want it.

I'm sure some will quibble about the exact numbers (well actually 6%!, well actually 20%!), but the point is that getting COVID is definitely not a no-risk thing.

[Alt Text: 69% say contracting COVID poses small or no risk to their health and well-being.]

colorfiend,

@anderspuck @grammargirl It is absolutely doable. One-way masking with well-fitting N95s has kept my family of four entirely covid-free. My kids go to middle and high school in person. We have traveled by plane multiple times in the last year. I admit we have given up eating in restaurants. And as case numbers go up, we socialize outside. But the masking is why we've stayed covid-free.

colorfiend,

@anderspuck @grammargirl
Seriously? Ask science. It's necessary until we can cure or negate the risk of long covid. Unless we've suddenly become okay with risking children's long-term health? Because we've learned that far from "kids don't get covid," kids have the same risk of catching covid and of developing long covid as adults do.
And, really, it's just a mask. No one is asking you to lockdown. Or to change your life beyond wearing a mask indoors in public crowds. What's the big deal?

colorfiend,

@anderspuck @grammargirl I'm sorry. From friends, my understanding is that it sucks.
If you're wearing a well-fit N95 mask (that's the key), it's significantly harder to get. We traveled with my son's high school team to an indoor competition in Texas with 55k people. We masked indoors. 90%+ of our team tested positive. We didn't.
My daughter and I saw Taylor Swift indoors with 64k people screaming people. We masked, sang, and didn't get covid. It's doable. We haven't been sick in 3+ years.
