My life is so dominated by discussions of how Mastodon can be improved that it's really refreshing to hear about what people like. Thanks @dangillmor!

I had my Covid booster about 2.5 weeks ago. The only downside was that amid disturbed sleep, I dislocated my shoulder. I'm getting physical therapy and NOW I'm less likely than ever to EVER GET COVID. Gonna gloat it up until it happens...

conlan,
@conlan@mastodon.social avatar

@danielpunkass I think vaccines are up there with humanity’s greatest achievements. It’s sad/amusing when anti-pharma conspiracists say disease cures are suppressed so they can make money treating the symptoms, yet vaccines (i.e., preemptive cures) are also somehow a depraved cash-grab.

Question! Is there a Mastodon app that lets you pre-write a few messages in a chain, and then post them all at once? I’m so used to doing that on Twitter for bigger ideas, and I don’t want to have to rapidly reply to my own message to then type the second part. Or, is that like philosophically not good on here?

@cabel @outadoc I know that @ivory does the “read more” thing and I assume many, but not all, clients do too. I was a bit flippant in my reply. I think you can try whatever you think is best and listen if there’s any kind of consensus pushback. We’re all just doing our best.

If you can drop a single device in a lake and lose your credential, it’s not a passkey. Passkeys are backed up and synced across your devices to deliver a great and safe user experience, while also eliminating phishing.

If it’s device-bound, it’s not a passkey. :)

conlan,
@conlan@mastodon.social avatar

@rmondello What if you lose all your devices? (This is a real question, not rhetorical. I don't fully understand how passkeys work.)

conlan,
@conlan@mastodon.social avatar

@tbroyer @rmondello Does that not weaken the security? Feel free to point me to a good explainer video or something… I think the complexity of passkeys may put off normal people from switching to them. (I'm speaking as someone who has started transitioning to them because they seem better than passwords, even if I don't completely understand the mechanisms.)

conlan,
@conlan@mastodon.social avatar

@tbroyer @rmondello Yeah, I can see how that’s an improvement. Thanks.

    @mathowie Oh, wow. I didn't realize whoever wins the election will be president during that milestone. Even if we still exist, having Trump preside over that would be the definition of an “inauspicious occasion”, and I don't even know what that phrase means.

    1. @panic sends out a nice, pretty, succinct email to confirm which type of their email newsletters I want to receive.

    2. I expressed my appreciation by replying “I love you” to the unmonitored email address from which it was sent.

    3. Exactly one minute after sending my reply, as if to illustrate the reason for my warm feelings, I receive a response from @cabel:

    I love having an old radio nerd in my family, whenever I spot a Philco at a garage sale I can text him a photo and get an answer back in seconds “oh that’s a mid-40s chairside modern maple model, the speaker alone is worth 10x their asking price and is easy to fix/refurb, GET IT”

    conlan,
    @conlan@mastodon.social avatar

    @mathowie Those old radios are so cool-looking. I like to listen to old time radio shows via the internet, so I bought a circa 1938 RCA model off eBay, yanked out the tubes, and put a little Bluetooth speaker inside. All things considered, it’s a relatively inexpensive time machine.

    The problems with our media in one headline

    “Climate activist Tom Steyer.”

    While Reuters doesn’t call Manchin or Koch or Uihlein or Wilks or Murdoch activists for fossil fuels.

    Just endless headlines attacking people trying to do good, while coddling corrupt actors who do selfish things. It’s maddening.

    conlan,
    @conlan@mastodon.social avatar

    @protecttruth I agree media can do a better job of disclaiming such things, but this particular framing isn’t so insidious. One could argue specific word choice, but climate activism is expressly the guy’s main gig: https://www.tomsteyer.com.

    Mastodon is great, the only thing I miss on this app is quote posts. I know they have a bad rap bc of Twitter, but every major social network has this functionality for a reason (Tumblr, LinkedIn, Facebook, IG). As a journalist, I’d love to add commentary and amplify great info, build on ppl’s points, etc. You just can’t do that the same wait with replies! Is there any chance we might get them on here?

    conlan,
    @conlan@mastodon.social avatar

    @taylorlorenz The percentage of wrong and/or irrelevant answers to this question is impressive. The answer, for anyone wondering, is that they are officially planned but there’s no ETA. https://joinmastodon.org/roadmap
