Hey community
what do you prefer? Having the Search input on the left or on the right?

Please see poll in next post

Elk having search input on the right

cragsand,

@Shini92 @elk
Would be neat if it resized the search bar to fill up more of the screen when you start typing to give more space for results.

When using search on Universeodon it also returns post content which gets a bit crowded in the small box, especially on mobile. I'll attach a screenshot.

The instance uses this custom search patch enabling searching of posts contents: https://github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon/pull/8

Keep up the great work! :fedi:

This catchy tune by @randulo deserves some more appreciation 😎
How can it just have 61 views?

I inadvertently blocked mastodon.social (and then corrected the mistake a moment later), which had the effect of unfollowing and reverse unfollowing everyone there. So if you followed me from there and for some ill-advised reason still want to, you might need to re-follow.

cragsand,

@mattblaze I had no idea this was even a thing. Good to know and thanks for the headsup

28/04/2023 ’s ice-penetrating antenna 📡 is at a third of its full intended length. The next steps to fully deploy the antenna include an engine burn to the a little followed by a series of rotations that will turn Juice, 🌡️up the mount and radar, which are currently in the cold shadows. https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Juice/Work_continues_to_deploy_Juice_RIME_antenna

  • cragsand,

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews Do they have a repository where you can submit bug reports or suggestions?
    I can't seem to find any. I found one repo on GitHub but it has issues disabled. 🤔

    I made a test "subreddit" aka "magazine" named https://kbin.social/m/thegoldengator

    To kind of mirror the subreddit I run over on https://www.reddit.com/r/thegoldengator/ but content isn't displayed in a good way.

    YouTube videos and Twitch Clips aren't embedded properly nor image thumbnails presented in a decent way. It seems to fit them vertically then crop excess weirdly which makes all posts look bad.

    All understandable if it's an early beta or alpha. Very curious about this and to see how it develops! :fedi:

    Awesome thank you!
    Very impressive for a prototype :blobBongo:

    cragsand,

    @jerry The AT protocol promises some improvements over ActivityPub that looks interesting and great in theory, like account and posts migration being built into it. The news of their approach to moderation so far has me worried though.

    Until it's available for everyone to start hosting their own servers, tinker and stress test it I remain skeptical. I'm very curious to see how it turns out when (or if...) it's released in the wild though.

    What topic areas did you turn to to learn about this week?

    What's the most interesting thing you learned? What's your favorite article out of what you read?

    cragsand,

    @wikipedia Glad to see so many dedicated science editors on Wikipedia. It's a delight when looking up information about NASA / ESA missions.

    Just a while ago I reflected over seeing many include such lovely details like photos from engineering specifications and parts manufacturers.

    Seeing how components come from all over the world is a great reminder that space science truly is an international effort!

    Stephen King still has his Blue Check—which he refuses to pay for—and he’s PISSED!

    He really doesn’t want that kind of social status.

    Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that buying Twitter Blue makes you look like such a loser that Elon personally paid for multiple celebrities' blue checks in order to humiliate them

    cragsand,

    @malwaretech Absolute insanity. I'll keep commenting on mutials to consider joining the fediverse even though I keep getting shadowbanned for doing so.

    👋 Hello ! I'm going into a meeting at 4ET to talk about our newsroom's social media options.

    If you think our station and other stations should have a Mastodon server or a broader presence in the , pls boost this post. If you have thoughts, please reply, I want to hear them!

    cragsand,

    @gbhnews
    A feature that's been missing for Mastodon has been fulltext searching of posts, aka fuzzy search. :fedi:

    Searching is mainly done via hashtags so a common trend is to add the relevant tags at the end of posts.

    It's a bit of a controversial topic to have the content of posts be searchable on Mastodon, but I'm sure with proper consent options to opt-in or opt-out that hurdle will be solved with good implementation. The discussion lives on here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21627

    There are exceptions though using custom implementation patches serverside like this one on universeodon.com written by clever people like VyrCossont https://github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon/pull/8

    For news based instances you really do want some forms of better searching like this implemented.

    Welcome to the fediverse and best of luck! :elmo_fire:

    cragsand,

    @edendestroyer @gbhnews
    That's why consent is important! Those who don't wish to be searchable should be respected to remain so and instance admins decide if they wish it disabled by default.
