"Patriarchy is often defined as a social system that is male-identified, male-dominated, & male-centered. It depends on a heteronormative gender binary that serves to divide & outsource human traits to different halves of the population.

In patriarchal societies, human traits associated with power & control are outsourced to men: domination, assertiveness, independence, decisiveness, & ambition are called masculine, & men are expected to conform to masculine traits."

@kjhealy did these participants consent? Was there IRB approval for this? This sounds like grossly unequal outcomes that people were precluded from experiencing with significant downstream effects on their lives.

This actually is so, so cool. As a #Psyche review board member I learned how electric propulsion is part of what makes this mission compelling from a technical point of view (alongside so, so much great science!). Ion thrust makes a craft behave differently in space than other propulsion systems, so it’s interesting for engineers and mission planners as part of the learning curve/contribution for next gen spaceflight.

That's odd. The UK election is being held on the USA's Independence Day, while the US election is being held on the UK's Guy Fawkes Night.

Don’t know if we can draw anything from that, but it's curious...

Preordered a #Jolla Community Phone.

I've wanted to try non-#Android #Linux on mobile for ages and this looks like the best way to do it.

The cost is reasonable, but there's a subscription necessary after a year — which I'll pay if I still love the device and want to support Jolla still, or I'll abandon the device and use as a toy if not.

It apparently supports Android apps to some degree, but I won't mind if stuff doesn't work and prompts me toward digital hygiene.

cyberlyra,
@cyberlyra@hachyderm.io avatar

@rhys I love my Sailfish devices. That’s my daily driver and has been since 2014ish. The subscription is new, part of their sustainability model. I currently have Sailfish running on a Sony Xperia 10iii and it’s perfect. APK functionality with no Google elements at all (I am allergic to Google and won’t even run e). These are the people formerly known as Nokia who guilt the gorgeous Meego Harmattan based on Debian, only to get taken over by Microsoft. It’s a beautiful OS and fully functional.

cyberlyra,
@cyberlyra@hachyderm.io avatar

@rhys yes I have only very rarely downloaded one that won’t run as it demands Google play services. Else everything is fully functional. It can’t do threaded multiparty MMS conversations but most ppl use text apps like Signal anyway. Brush up on your red hat commands as it runs on Fedora instead of Debian. There is an active and helpful community, check out forum.jolla.org , also the CHUM and Warehouse repos and openrepos.net for community-made apps.

Love love love what the #Jolla team is doing with AI — reimagining and building systems that are data-ownership centered to put privacy first —privacy as autonomy, not privacy as information security for cloud providers holding your data.

I am blown away by 's new subscription model... I can understand why it is necessary, but at this point I would go with with : open source as I wish was

cyberlyra,
@cyberlyra@hachyderm.io avatar

@ilpianista They are seeking sustainability and features for market share in an otherwise closed marketplace of walled gardens. I don’t blame them for it.

cyberlyra,
@cyberlyra@hachyderm.io avatar

@thaodan @ilpianista I hear these concerns. I remind myself that this is part of their restructure toward independence, to remove Rostelecom as a source of investment and support. Hence also the spinoff companies for automotive and AI, to manage risk, income, stakeholders and debt separately from core SFOS. An attempt at financial stability and independence and for the community to help keep their lights on, not a subscription to keep your stuff on their cloud (I self host a ton of stuff too).
