I got a notification on #Facebook that #Meta plans to use my posts etc. for training #AI and said they were using the Legitimate Interest justification for doing it.

I sent in an objection stating that using data for training AI doesn't fall within the remit of what a user might reasonably expect the company to do with my data on the basis of the service being provided: https://www.gdpreu.org/the-regulation/key-concepts/legitimate-interest/

They have upheld my objection and will not use my data. So you can do it too!

2020: Microsoft sets goal to be carbon negative by end of the decade.

2023: Microsoft's emissions are 30% higher than in 2020.

Main cause? The relentless push to meet AI demand, which requires new data centers built out of carbon-intensive steel, cement, chips.

@akshatrathi ooh wait lemme guess, we are not supposed to pay attention to the rapacious use of limited resources to fuel AI now—the materials sunk into the ocean for “cooling” that are bleaching corals and melting ice caps so that grade schoolers can cheat on their homework— we are supposed to think about how all this sets us up for more efficient solutions in the future when the technology inevitably improves, amirite?

The real #aiethics , make no mistake.

Watched the original Star Wars trilogy with the kid this weekend and it’s been a long time since I have seen it. One thing that really stuck out to me was… what, thematically, is the movie trying to say about droids? The message seems to be that they are regular people like everyone else, and also chattel slaves, and also that’s it’s fine and also kind of funny? Like both Han and Luke are repeatedly shown doing obvious villain shit to droids and I can’t tell why we are not supposed to care

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

@cyberlyra @glyph otoh this is treated so much more seriously and beautifully in Andor though where there are continual questions of droid power and functioning, as so many of the questions about manufacturing and technology were taken much more seriously in that show! My favorite was the part where the droid lying was going to take extra power. Lost none of the original Star Wars droid poignancy and added so much with those choices

New Supported Sailfish OS Devices

The 10 V and 10 IV have been added to the list of supported devices on Jolla's Sailfish OS documentation website. Images for these models should be available with the upcoming 4.6.0 Sauna release. However, support for the Sony Xperia X appears to have been discontinued.

📰 The Ongoing Triumph of Ingenuity

The Space Review is running this piece at the top of this week's edition. It's written from my perspective as the relatively new head of the AeroVironment team that worked with NASA JPL to create Ingenuity, the Mars helicopter. 🚁

It's a mix of mission recap, personal reflection, and thoughts on what I think comes next for drones on Mars.

Shocking news today that Dictionary.com has laid off all its lexicographers.

I already had a line in next week's podcast about dictionaries being a tough industry, and now it's even more true.

Some great company should hire them all; they're a real dream team
